Re: [RBW] Re: Panniers vs Bikepacking bags

2017-04-28 Thread Robert Keal
DP,

I think the claimed handling benefits for a bikepacking setup generally are
only benefits for those who want to ride aggressively on an off-road tour.
My bikes definitely handle more naturally and with less forethought
required when I'm using a basket/seat bag/frame bag setup, but the point of
bike camping for me isn't really to "shred the gnar" so much as to spend
time in the woods in the company of friends (or myself), so these handling
"benefits" don't matter much to me.

My experience with an intense hike-a-bike was with Ortlieb Sport Packer
Plus panniers mounted to a rear rack. It was about 3-4 hours total, and we
must have lifted our bikes up and over 20 fallen trees all while gaining
and losing elevation at a dizzying pace--in 100 degree heat. The panniers
caused me to have to push from an awkward angle. For the first half hour,
it didn't matter. After two or three, though, the awkward position caused a
lot of strain in several areas of my body. Front panniers may have been
easier in some ways, but they present different issues. Namely, each log of
any size requires one to lift or otherwise support the front wheel and bags
up and over, whereas rear panniers allow one to employ the ol' drag method.
:)

Ultimately, I think a front and rear saddlebag with full frame bag setup
might work best for me for off-road touring (and a rear saddlebag with
front panniers for road tours), but I'm going to give the seat bag at least
one more go before I rule it out.

Re: [RBW] Re: Front Racks: Nitto 32F vs. M18 (And possible WTT/FS 32F)

2017-04-26 Thread Robert Keal
Thanks, Bill. I trust your analysis and was hoping you'd chime in. It
sounds like I could sell the 32F and get an M18, but it wouldn't
necessarily be an upgrade in capacity, despite the numbers.

I could also kludge together something with the Surly rack so it could fit
my Sam, get bendy with the VO front rack, or go aluminum with the Rawland
Demiporteur or a Blackburn.

I could also just keep the darn rack I have, support the tombstone with a
strap to the handlebars, and forget about it. That seems too easy, but it's
perhaps the right call. Still curious what's out there for potential
trades, though!

2017-04-26 Thread Robert Keal
Garth opined:

"If I had a Surly and wanted a small-ish front rack I would get one of
their 8-Pack racks or a 12-Pack for a wider platform and excellent with a
basket. Both rated to 13.6kg/30 pounds and even the 8-Pack is larger
platform than the Nitto. They mount directly to any Surly frame using their
braze ons. That's just me of course, and I have no allegiance to any
certain brands, just whatever works best."

I agree that the 8-Pack Rack would be a great option for my Troll. I'm
greedy, though, as well as frugal (cheap), and I want it to work on my Sam,
too. I should've mentioned that in my initial post. My Sam has mid-ish fork
braze-ons, but nothing on the crown. Perhaps it could be rigged?

Awesome responses, folks!

While I firmly believe that my n=2, if I were to add a bike, it would most
definitely be a tandem. I planned to buy a 26" wheeled mtb Burly Rock and
Roll off a friend who bought a HHH tandem, but in the end I couldn't
justify it. Pretty bummed about that, but I'm sure another opportunity to
own a tandem will present itself down the road. And when we move away from
my school's campus and back to the city, a cargo bike will be extremely
tempting...

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

2017-02-15 Thread Robert Keal
Agreed on all counts, Bill. Patronizing LBSs is fun, and I love the
connection with owners and workers. It feels good to support real people.

But it's not always that easy for me. I tinker with my bikes because it's
fun, and I enjoy it, not because I *need *to. Can I always afford to pay my
LBS--where prices are generally, but not always, competitive with online
sources--for all of the parts/bikes/tools I need to fuel my tinkering fire?
Nope, I can't. So I figure I've got four choices:

1) Don't buy the stuff at all because I don't really need it;
2) Only buy stuff when I can afford it at LBS price;
3) Default to the world wide interwebernets when LBS prices are "out of
reach."
4) Buy used/second-hand whenever possible and forego the whole
retail/discounted retail thing altogether.

I generally get all of my consumables (brake pads, cables/housing, etc.)
from my LBS, but the first places I look for parts are generally this
list/iBob/eBay--and it occurs to me that this could also theoretically hurt
the LBS, although perhaps the parts were or may've been purchased there
originally and this train of thought is now making my head hurt. And I do
often default to scouring different sources online for the cheapest price
on the parts I want. In fact, I'm working on a build right now for a frame
that I'm planning to buy from a LBS, and I'm still scouring the www to find
cheapest prices on parts. I know this hurts my LBS, but I allow the desire
to have the part and the desire to make it fit into my non-existent bike
budget overwhelm my desire to support local business and real people--but
then again, aren't there real people behind those websites, too? And now my
head hurts again.

Anyway, perhaps this has been less a productive contribution to this thread
and more a personal confession. So it goes.

Re: [RBW] Re: S24o Kit Evaluation

2017-02-01 Thread Robert Keal
It's interesting to note that location, perhaps even more than season,
dictates what we pack.

For example, it makes a ton of sense for DP to plan for worst case
scenarios given that he's camping (I'd guess, at least) at, near, or above
the tree line in the Rockies.

Also, Phillip is sure to bring rope for a bear bag, which makes sense given
that he's on the East Coast (I think?) and in black bear country. My good
buddy from Northern CA, on the other hand, had never even heard of a bear
bag before this past summer when we went on a trip in VA. Food storage and
safety around Grizzlies is an entirely different issue. (Or is it? Deacon,
do you use bear bags when wild camping?)

In other words, all of our needs are different, and it's important to do
research on possible "snags" you might hit given your location and the time
of year. And if you are truly headed into the wilderness, ye olde Boy Scout
motto, "Be prepared," most certainly applies.

On a related note, here's a winter bikepacking packlist just released by
bikepacking.com, a very cool site.:

http://www.bikepacking.com/plan/winter-bikepacking-packlist/

I think they have a three-season list somewhere, as well.

But the same thing happened with the words on the TED list, right? Someone,
at some moment in the past, used a word incorrectly. Their incorrect use of
the word influenced someone else (an "acolyte") to do the same, and so on
and so forth, n*ice* no longer means *silly*. It means pleasant or
agreeable. In other words, what we now see as an evolution of the meaning
of the word *nice *was really just a choice made by one person that ended
up catching on, just like BSNYC's use of the word Fred, and I don't think
it makes a difference if it takes ten years or 100 for the new meaning to
catch on.

On a related note, I think BSNYC is hilarious.

The website says riders 5'7" to 6'2" fit the 24" medium. It also says in

in the end, I think Jeff would say, "Call me to discuss fit." Guessing
wouldn't be a great move considering a bad guess costs a pretty penny.

Re: [RBW] Re: Covered Bridge Metric Century, Lancaster PA 8/21

2016-08-19 Thread Robert Keal
I'm with Kevin and will definitely be monitoring the weather leading up to
Sunday--it'll likely be a game-time decision for me. I suppose I could
throw the fenders back on my Sam and make it work, but I'm not really
looking to ride all day in the rain. Here's to hoping for a shift in the
forecast!

Re: [RBW] Re: Some recent Gravel & Grind Riv builds and a last plug for our Riv and B-stone owners Bunch Ride Sunday the 14th

2016-08-19 Thread Robert Keal
As another plug for their rides, I went on a rather epic 53 miler with the
G folks sometime in July. Highlights included countless beautiful country
roads, a river swim stop, a ridiculously tough gravel climb that my legs
and Sam could not conquer without the help of my feet making contact with
the ground (AKA I walked), and a pitch dark single track and road descent
that ended after midnight. In short, it was tons of painful fun.

Everybody was super nice, too, and the general vibe of the ride was
decidedly "just ride." Can't wait until the next time I'm able to join up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Covered Bridge Metric Century, Lancaster PA 8/21

2016-06-24 Thread Robert Keal
I'll be on my Sam with 42 mm Soma Shikoros and Treetop saddle wedge (via
Jeff). I'll likely remove the basket for the ride, although I've been
enjoying the setup with my makeshift "rando bag," a large canvas fanny
pack. :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

2016-06-17 Thread Robert Keal
I wouldn't argue. I'm halfway tempted to throw the Moustache bar back on my
Sam with a DD stem--it actually came from Riv with a 100 mm Technomic +
Moustache combo--but I'm happy with the Albas for now, so I won't be going
to the trouble.

Still not settled on a handlebar purchase for my mtb. Silly spending so
much time reading and thinking about this, but then again, maybe not. I'll
pull the trigger on something tomorrow. :)

Thanks, Bill. My Sam has eyelets just under my canti mounts and near the
bottom of the fork blades. Hopefully that clears it up.
