[RBW] John Tweed Cycles in Basel

2014-03-30 Thread SMP
Hello Bunch,

I just stumbled upon a really cool bike shop in Basel, Switzerland and I
thought I should share. It is called John Tweed
Cycleshttp://www.johntweed.ch/.
Here's a video overview of the store.

Enjoy.

Thank you!

You're right... luckily I don't live or work on those hills :) Still,
always to have them in my back pocket, just in case.

It's a beautiful bike, and what a great area to ride it in!

[RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack

2013-08-12 Thread SMP
Good to know... I think I'll do the same during my upcoming trip to the US
(buy Schmidt lighting wire + fancy quick disconnects). Sad that I have to
go to America to buy German parts, because I am still not sure about how to
ask for these things in European bike shops.

On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 1:18:01 PM UTC+2, Brian Campbell wrote:

I bought about 10ft. of Schmidt lighting wire from Peter White, as the
Supernova tail light wire was not long enough. I did the slpice near the
rear of the bike and hid it behind the non-drive side chainstay, attached
with zip ties. I mounted my quick disconnect on the front rack, it was the
 easiest place to hide it.

On Tuesday, August 6, 2013 12:31:48 PM UTC-4, SMP wrote:

Ah I see, so you already had the BM taillight on hand.

Did the taillight come with enough wiring to route all the way down the
frame and fender, or did you have to buy any extension? I know you
mentioned using the Supernova quick disconnects... I was thinking of doing
the same, because I have SS couplers. (Might as well make everything
breakable in half, right? Including the dynamo wiring)

On Tuesday, August 6, 2013 1:35:52 AM UTC+2, Brian Campbell wrote:

Here are a couple of bad photos of how I did it.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/76454470@N05/8358830287/

It was a pretty simple job and I did not get worked up about it being
pro level work. I removed the existing light's internals, sawed the
Supernova tail light mounting tabs off so it would fit inside the housing,
ran the wire out the back and used a heavy duty 2 part epoxy to attach the
light the the back plate of the housing. after the epoxy cured. I
surrounded the light w/ silicone to take up some dead space and to help
 adhere the light as well.

Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and
 down the fender stay.

What a timely post! I am actually in the same dilemma, where I have a

taillight into BM housing. Do you have any up-close photos or a 'how to'
 of this setup?

(Peter White built) and put a Supernova tail light in the Busch Mueller
tail light housing. I was unaware, previously, that the Supernova
 headlight
and taillight were a matched pair and had to be used toghther. Ran the
wiring along the front rack w/ Supernova quick disconnects.

The rack works fine with my size 11.5 feet and my Arkel Utility Basket

the mounting tang gets hung up on the rear quick release. I mat still
 make

Hi Steve,

I believe the P50s are meant for 700c bikes, but I sure would love to see
them make a 50mm wide fender for 26 wheels. I went ahead and ordered the
P55.

http://www.sks-germany.com/?l=ena=productr=mudguardsi=6409800121CHROMOPLASTICS

I think I will be needing a massive mudflap after switching to these
relatively shorter fenders to have equivalent splash coverage, so thanks
for that photo. Sounds like a fun DIY project.

Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders

2013-08-07 Thread SMP
Hi all, I decided to go with the P55 SKS silver chromoplastic fenders from
Riv. I believe it will make for a more practical bike in the long run. In
the meantime, I will have to store the Gilles Berthoud idea in the
someday, maybe box until I am more mechanically inclined to manage metal
fender benders.

Thanks for your help in the decision process.

[RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack

Ah I see, so you already had the BM taillight on hand.

Did the taillight come with enough wiring to route all the way down the
frame and fender, or did you have to buy any extension? I know you
mentioned using the Supernova quick disconnects... I was thinking of doing
the same, because I have SS couplers. (Might as well make everything
breakable in half, right? Including the dynamo wiring)

Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and down
 the fender stay.

be different for those on Riv's, but barely noticeable until it hits 15

 effect on the steering.

To the OP, I saw your photos with the Wald but as someone else already
said, having the weight lower would help tremendously. As much as I like
the crates, I would be concerned with total weight of the bike. I would
definitely go with a front rack and then attaching whatever you want.

[RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders

Hi Michael,

I think, at least for the Al fenders I have on my 26 wheels, the front

wheel models for Honjo?

Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders

2013-08-06 Thread SMP
Thanks, all for your considerations. I see many of you are recommending
the SKS longboard model, but I've already tried
thesehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/sumehra/5556633615/in/set-72157626217977955

It is very difficult to fit a fender made for 700c wheels fit onto a 26
wheel, and it's 45mm width is probably also too narrow for my 26x1.5
tires. I also had trouble with the length of the front longboard fender
hitting the curb, and the fender popping out of the 'socket' (which, in
retrospect, is preferred to the alternate option of bending an Al fender
out of shape). This is why, for SKS fenders, I am specifically, only
considering the silver P55 of the chromoplastic model.

The more I read your comments, the more I am inclined towards going for the
SKS, just... the Gilles Berthoud's are so pretty! If I go with the GB, it
will be the 50mm short variety. Not sure what short entails, but after
having two sets of too-long fenders, I'm opting for short + mudflap if
necessary.

I have the longboards on my Hilsen, with sheldon fender nuts, which rotate

bit on the handlebar before descending the curb, essentially jumping
down, which gives the bike a chance to make some forward movement before
 falling.

Hmm... that is a good idea regarding redrilling the holes on the Honjos,

 save my feet from spray

things sold on the Rivendell site just seem to work with minimal fuss. I
should continue to keep this in the back of my mind when planning
changes/upgrades.

That picture was from the first time riding this bike -- I was too afraid

I like your picture. Gotta love a store that allows your bike inside to

Maybe using retractable zip ties or a klickfix solution? I want to have

My last question is, is this a terrible idea?

be different for those on Riv's, but barely noticeable until it hits 15
pounds and more. With the weight I carry I can ride no hands with no ill
 effect on the steering.

To the OP, I saw your photos with the Wald but as someone else already
said, having the weight lower would help tremendously. As much as I like
the crates, I would be concerned with total weight of the bike. I would
definitely go with a front rack and then attaching whatever you want.

[RBW] Re: Gotham Cargo Crate

2013-08-02 Thread SMP
Tom--first, thanks for the compliments. My bike is blushing :). Second,
regarding your aversion to using a wooden crate due to crashing... Do you
mean the crash will be that much worse because pieces of wood would fly
everywhere and jab me in a vital organ, but maybe a wald basket would just
bend out of shape, at worst? Hmm.. I think I may understand where you are
coming from.

I already had a handlebar-mounted Wald basket
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumehra/5593701927/in/set-72157626345789636previously,

but I promptly removed it because it was just too big for my liking. I
would have to go for a smaller (medium) sized basket this time with a
Mark's rack, because I prefer a lower position and would like to keep it
off the handlebar if at all possible.

You ask if this is a terrible idea. Your bike is drop dead gorgeous. I

substantial, wooden things with metal corners (perhaps, not the Autumn, but
it is angular). They are quite elegant. I don't want to crash with one of
those on my bike. I have my troubles and crashes are a matter of when, not
if for me. I don't want such a rigid structure in that scenario. I do
think that Wald baskets are great if your goal is carrying stuff. And,
they are quite aerodynamic if nothing is in them.

 Hope this is helpful.

Re: [RBW] Gotham Cargo Crate

2013-08-02 Thread SMP
Yes, actually I am less concerned about the price tag and more about the
functionality and aesthetics. 90 is not a lot in the grand scheme of
things. I mean, it is going on a custom Rivendell frame! Now I am torn
between a Wald or Gotham basket... With a rack, the former would actually
be more expensive. Decisions, decisions.

On Thursday, August 1, 2013 5:16:20 PM UTC+2, Ron Mc wrote:

I agree with every sentiment above - they look cool, the hardware is neat,

bag adds up to a lot more than $90. I could share your dilemma and
 temptation. Thanks for showing these.

using retractable zip ties or a klickfix solution? I want to have the
versatility to have it on most of the time for my inner city use, but from
time to time on long rides, have the option to go crate-free.

My last question is, is this a terrible idea?

Thanks and looking forward to your feedback.

The rear light (a SpookLight), is powered by battery (and rechargeable

the backstory on this bike, what you plan to use it for, the ss
 couplers are intriguing :)

I have not, but I can attest to the Townie (another model) that they

My dad is shopping for a bike. He wants it comfortable, so I'm

I could get a handsome devil built up for that price.. maybe a LHT
 with different bars.

 Any suggestions?
