Good to know... I think I'll do the same during my upcoming trip to the US (buy Schmidt lighting wire + fancy quick disconnects). Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
Hi Steve, I believe the P50s are meant for 700c bikes, but I sure would love to see them make a 50mm wide fender for 26 wheels. I went ahead and ordered the P55. http://www.sks-germany.com/?l=ena=productr=mudguardsi=6409800121CHROMOPLASTICS I think I will be needing a massive mudflap after switching to these relatively shorter fenders to have equivalent splash coverage, so thanks for that photo. I also had trouble with the length of the front longboard fender hitting the curb, and the fender popping out of the 'socket' (which, in retrospect, is preferred to the alternate option of bending an Al fender out of shape). This is why, for SKS fenders, I am specifically, only considering the silver P55 of the chromoplastic model. The more I read your comments, the more I am inclined towards going for the SKS, just... the Gilles Berthoud's are so pretty! If I go with the GB, it will be the 50mm short variety. Not sure what short entails, but after having two sets of too-long fenders, I'm opting for short + mudflap if necessary. I was hoping to move onto something more durable, and am contemplating between SKS Chromoplastic (26 P55) and Gilles Berthoud fenders (26 50mm). I am thinking the former would be a good option to improve the practicality, tone down the showyness, and reduce the chance of theft (although I live in one of the safest cities in the world -- Zurich, not sure if this should be a legitimate concern); however, the latter just seems to be a nice and durable option for a 'high end' bike. Also, I am not very mechanically inclined, so that is also another consideration. I would have an LBS install this, but if something happens in the middle of nowhere, I would think the SKS would be easier to pop into place.
Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
Hi all, I decided to go with the P55 SKS silver chromoplastic fenders from Riv. I believe it will make for a more practical bike in the long run. In the meantime, I will have to store the Gilles Berthoud idea in the someday, maybe box until I am more mechanically inclined to manage metal fender benders. [RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack
Ah I see, so you already had the BM taillight on hand. Did the taillight come with enough wiring to route all the way down the frame and fender, or did you have to buy any extension? I know you mentioned using the Supernova quick disconnects... I was thinking of doing the same, because I have SS couplers. (Might as well make everything breakable in half, right? I removed the existing light's internals, sawed the Supernova tail light mounting tabs off so it would fit inside the housing, ran the wire out the back and used a heavy duty 2 part epoxy to attach the light the the back plate of the housing. after the epoxy cured. I surrounded the light w/ silicone to take up some dead space and to help adhere the light as well. Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and down the fender stay. Hmm... that is a good idea regarding redrilling the holes on the Honjos, and rotating them further forward! [RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack
What a timely post! I am actually in the same dilemma, where I have a Supernova up front, and wanted to get a fender-mounted taillight. Alas, I only recently came to realize that my headlight is only compatible with a Supernova tail light. I had no idea you could place the Supernova taillight into BM housing. I was unaware, previously, that the Supernova headlight and taillight were a matched pair and had to be used toghther. Ran the wiring along the front rack w/ Supernova quick disconnects. The rack works fine with my size 11.5 feet and my Arkel Utility Basket rear bags. That's pretty slick... but still, if the wiring is black, you can see the black on top of the bright colored bike paint. [RBW] Re: Gotham Cargo Crate
Hi Tom, I now understand your rationale and concern. I cannot imagine how I would give the crate 'break-away' functionality, so I am seriously considering going with the Wald medium basket instead. Re: [RBW] Re: Gotham Cargo Crate
If I go for the medium Wald, I would definitely use some sort of front rack to stabilize it. Regarding the total weight though, I would think that a Crate with aluminum struts would add about the same amount of weight as a Mark's mini + Wald medium, don't you think? My bike is not a Riv so handling might be different for those on Riv's, but barely noticeable until it hits 15 pounds and more. With the weight I carry I can ride no hands with no ill effect on the steering. To the OP, I saw your photos with the Wald but as someone else already said, having the weight lower would help tremendously. Just watch that the strut doesn't hang up on the lawyer lips (the little bumps that keep your front wheel from falling out as easily, assuming your fork has them). So, here is the back story--I am a consultant, by profession, and also aim to be car-free or car-light, at least while I am terrestrial. So, I decided on having the coolest-bike-ever made for myself to help me toward that goal. At the time I was spec'ing this bike, I was doing a lot of traveling to cities like Seattle, NYC, Newark, etc, on pretty much a weekly basis, for work. So, I decided to add couplers and make it lean and mean, with little-to-no chachkis (no racks, fenders, bell, pump) to make it easy to assemble/disassemble. Since I don't like the look of the generic couplers, I asked if Rivendell would carve it to match the surrounding lugwork. They did! Then, once the frame was finished, I got on a local project where I do not have to travel (at least for another 6 months). For that reason, I'm rigging it for practicality with fenders, etc, and trying to use it on a daily basis as part of my commute. Once I get back on the road, I may remove the racks and fenders. So, there you have it! Thanks -- I'd love to see your wifes BF! I think I have seen the Cream + Light blue on Riv's site. It's always nice to do something to make it unlike any other bike. On Apr 30, 3:56 pm, Geoff mocha...@hotmail.com wrote: Wow, gorgeous custom Riv mixte! The special work done on your SS couplers(carved hearts to match the lugs) is really icing on the cake! My wife has a standard Betty Foy, but had it custom painted in cream with red panels and hearts. It came out so beautifully, that Grant then had another Betty frame painted in cream with medium-light blue panels. Slightly different, but along the same vein. Whomever scooped up that frame was lucky! I really like the Paul canti brakes that you spec'd...very nice! [RBW] Re: My new Custom Rivendell Mixte
Hi Ness, Thank you :) I would love to see photos of your bike, and the BF. I contemplated doing the same with a BF instead of going the custom route, but I was in-between sizes, and didn't want to compromise on fit. Also, the lugs pushed me towards the custom route as well. I added to my photostream if you'd like to check out the new rear rack setup. Front rack + ziptied basket may be in the works if rear-only setup is too limiting. On Apr 30, 11:38 pm, grrlyrida grrlyr...@gmail.com wrote: Sumehra, That is the most gorgeous bike I've seen on this site. I love the color. I have a go fast bike in that color now and plan on getting a Betty Foy painted a similar shade. Good for you for getting a custom mixte. I wish I could afford one but the BF will have to do for now. I agree with Minh. Get a small front rack and ziptie your basket to it. May you and your bike see many fun bike trips with those couplers. Lucky gal! [RBW] Re: My new Custom Rivendell Mixte
Thanks, Brett. The bike actually has a SON dynamo hub on the front wheel that powers a Supernova E3 front light. This light is currently mounted to the fork crown, but I have been advised to remove that mount and put on a front rack. The rear light (a SpookLight), is powered by battery (and rechargeable by USB), and has turn-signals (with a wireless controller in the front). It is pretty sweet, but I am still getting the hang of using the turn signal controller.
