the grip sections of the wider alba bars are a bit more parallel... i.e. the grips on the narrower one are more flared. [RBW] Rando Advice
I'm thinking of riding in a 100k populaire in a couple weeks. I know it's not a tremendous distance but it'll be my first rando event and my longest ride ever. I plan to do it on my Hilsen... I've got the necessary reflectors, lights (battery), fenders, and a small sackville saddle bag + front trunk sack to carry stuff. I've got 40mm Marathon Supremes on there now. I imagine I'd be the only one with 40mm tires. Not that that's a deal breaker but I've been contemplating getting a set of faster tires and this seems like as good a reason as any to make a purchase. What sort of tires do people normally ride on such an event? I love all the Schwalbes I've had and am tempted to get Kojaks out of brand loyalty. I was also eyeing the 32mm Grand Bois Cypress on Jan's site. As far as I can tell Jan is the rando guy and I can't imagine he'd sell crappy tires. What sort of foods do people eat? I'd rather avoid things in the power goo and protein pudding food group. I went for a ride with some roadie types a few weeks ago and brought dates as my snack. I was keeping up ok before I ate the dates but the dates sat heavy in my belly and I became a slug. How extensive of a tool kit do people generally bring on a ride like this? I generally carry more tools than I've ever really needed on the road. Flats are really my only stop-me-in-my-tracks roadside repair I've had to deal with. I'm tempted to minimize the tool kit but don't want to go too small. I realize the ride is short enough that I could probably get by doing business as usual and get through it but thought I'd solicit advice from those who have gone before. Perhaps I could appear more sophisticated than I really am. Any thoughts or advice... food, tire, tool, or otherwise... would be appreciated. [RBW] Re: Albatross vs Noodle???
I'm in a bit of a handlebar crisis myself. I have Albas on my Surly Big Dummy and love them. I also like to ride my wife's way-to-small-for-me Betty Foy with albas. I wanted to be a moustache guy so built my AHH with m-bars. But after 6 months I was still ho-hum about them, so a week or 2 ago I switched to the wide noodles. I'm liking the wide noodles enough, but can imagine swapping bars again in the next couple months. The dilemma becomes... what direction to go??? narrower drops (which is pretty much any other drop bar out there... might try a Maes Parallel bar from Compass), the tried and proven albas, or perhaps the New Bar (just because). I'm not sure how any of this really helps the initial poster other than to point out he's not alone in the handlebar dilemma. Best of luck. --Smitty On Monday, March 5, 2012 7:22:30 PM UTC-8, murphyjrfk wrote: Here's the dilemma...or whatever ya wanna call it. i think i'm a full time albatrosser. i have both i like both but i really only love the albatross. Re: [RBW] Re: Drop Bar Newbie Qs
I wasn't too keen on any drop bars before a few days ago. The 48 noodles were bought on a whim off the list here and sat untouched for several weeks. My whole thought process was something like: Since all my other bars are at least this wide maybe wide drop bars would smooth the transition to drop bars. It wasn't until I decided I was going to give drops an honest try and actually put them on my bike and rode them a little that I really gave any more thought to what features/sizes I might actually prefer in a drop bar. I'm fine with the 48s for now. But that's sort of like saying I'm fine with Skippy peanut butter before I ever try Adams... or any other peanut butter. Regarding the 48s I have already noticed that they're not as sporty feeling as I initially thought. Perhaps that's just my getting used to them after a few miles. I can imagine swapping the 48s out for something narrower... if only as an experiment. When/if I do, I'll surely post about it. --Smitty On Tuesday, February 28, 2012 4:50:33 AM UTC-8, Steve Palincsar wrote: On Mon, 2012-02-27 at 20:00 -0800, Smitty-A-Go-Go wrote: Those Grand Bois bars are intriguing. [RBW] Re: Drop Bar Newbie Qs
*Thanks for all the replies, comments and advice. Those Grand Bois bars are intriguing. If I were buying bars today, those would be on the short list. I’m going to ride the bars I have for now (48cm Noodles) and get a feel for what my drop bar preferences are. Perhaps next time I get fidgety the GBs will get ordered. After reading everything here I went with the 7cm stem set about an inch above the saddle. It’s funny how when I was in “analytical” mode going back and forth between a 7cm stem and a 9cm stem I was noticing all sorts of little differences. Not that those differences don’t matter, but so often it’s more a case of getting lost in a world of looking for “better” or “worse” when in fact they’re just different and either will work fine. Anyway, I went with the 7cm, quit over analyzing, and went for a ride. I’ve actually gotten out for a couple short rides and like the set-up more each time. It’ll be interesting to try narrower bars after I’m good and used to these. On a sort of related note... I was feeling a bit tinker-y this weekend and in addition to the new bar set-up I hacked a few add-ons to the “Double-Double Homer” as my kids call it. The first is something that I’m sure has been done before, but I’ve never seen it... a light bar for the front of my platrack. The second mod is how I cheated my way into being able to go for a ride today... a kid seat on my rear rack so my 3-year-old could ride on the back of the AHH. * * * Relevant pics here.https://picasaweb.google.com/113148323994353762329/NewAHHBarsAndKidSeat?authuser=0feat=directlink Happy pedaling. --Smitty On Thursday, February 23, 2012 8:29:37 PM UTC-8, Smitty-A-Go-Go wrote: I've always had straight or upright bars. [RBW] Re: SH/AHH sizing question
+1 on the Go with what Riv says sentiment. They do this every day and are familiar with their bikes and how they fit. I'm 190cm tall with a 93+ pbh... I ride a 65cm Hilsen and I can't imagine a bike fitting better. That said, I probably would be fine on a 67cm too. But I think a 63cm would feel a bit small. --Smitty On Saturday, February 25, 2012 11:14:48 AM UTC-8, Lugmonster wrote: Hello all, I live in Australia and am thinking of picking up a Riv, either a Hillborne or a Hilsen. Given shipping issues etc. I'm sweating over picking the right sized frame. My PBH is 94cm but my height is only 186cm ie. I have a pretty long bottom half and short top half. The folks at Riv are suggesting that I should be looking at a 64cm Hillborne or a 65cm Hilsen. Now this to me seems massive, as I seem to be comfortable on an effective top tube length of about 570mm on a standard racing bike (56-68cm frame). Any top tube past 580mm and I feel like its a bit of a stretch. I'm therefore thinking of maybe a smaller Hilsen (?63) or a 60cm Hillborne. I do appreciate that the bars will be higher thus shortening the distance to handlebars but still it seems like those frames are a bit stretched out for me. Anyone with a similar build who has had experiences positive or negative with Riv sizing? Could you provide some advice? [RBW] Re: Drop Bar Newbie Qs
Bar height (which I interpret as stem clamp center) is an inch above saddle height. I should also point out that my idea of an aggressive position is likely skewed by my riding relatively upright cargo bikes 5 days a week. I kind of knew this going in but it sounds like my best bet is to pick a stem, wire the brakes and go for a ride longer than around the block to see what happens when I get used to the set-up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: New Bombadil and AHH
I have mixed feelings about the Pletscher 2-legger. It's definitely more stable than a 1-legger but both my wife and I tend to put too much confidence in it, and both of our bikes (Hilsen and Betty) have fallen over several times while on the stand. I understand the falling over when it's asymmetrically loaded but both bikes have gone over while unloaded from front wheel flop. I recently took the 2-legger off my bike to avoid more unnecessary falls. A bike can't fall over if it's laying on the ground. Yes, A Silver group sounds great. I was in a LBS today and they had a NOS XTR reverse action rear derailer. I would have bought the XTR today but it was overwhelmingly tough-guy ugly. As I'm standing there looking at the derailer... Both bikes in my garage with real cork grips are clear shellacked. The longer lived one is about 18 months old and still looks fine after near daily use. [RBW] Re: Atlantis vs. Sam
According to my experience today --- via a bikey neighbor I went on my first road ride with a group of race-y types... I was on my country-ish AHH and the only one not wearing lycra everything --- anything that can accommodates racks, fenders, or tires over 28mm falls in the category of not a real bike. One guy pointed out that my bike was more a I pointed out that I left my Pinarello at home 'cause it isn't half the bike as my Hilsen. But that doesn't answer the Q in the OP. I just wanted to vent. I would go Atlantis 'cause of the increased tire capacity. That said... I have 40mm tires on the aforementioned AHH and they're plenty big for any sort of mixed-surface use shy of single track mountain biking. I haven't ridden it any great lengths loaded on dirt but we do have some dirt roads in my neighborhood that I've been known to ride with panniers and basket full of groceries. It handles reasonably well except when it's really muddy. I guess my point being that If money's an issue, go with the Sam. I probably would have gone with an Atlantis instead of the AHH but I would ride a 66... which was no longer available when I bought mine. Also, a small part of me thinks the less fancy appearance of the Sam makes it a little less attention grabbing + theft prone. I sometimes worry about locking up my AHH but part of that is 'cause it just looks fancy... you don't have to know what it is to recognize it's a nice bike. The Atlantis has similar fancy + attention grabbing paint. I suppose if that aspect outweighed my loving how it looks I might get it painted mono-tone. But I'm not there yet. Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis vs. Sam
I think they didn't know what to make of Homer and as a result saw the lugs + shiny bits as frivolous. I was aware going in the possibility of my bike being seen as being an oddball but I didn't think it would be pointed out to me. As a correction... one of my initial sentences was half deleted... or perhaps I only typed half of it before my brain jumped ahead. Anyway... it should read: One guy pointed out that my bike was more a toy than a machine. I've a friend who refers to me as a Riven-dork but it's used in a friendly way. He understands + rides fat tires, racks and bags... he just thinks Rivs are over priced. I've heard of Rivsters getting guff like this but now I feel like I've been initiated into the next level of Riv-ness. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system
I see this from 2 sides... As a Riv customer... I like the old system better. Getting the once a year lump sum felt like a gift with substance. The new system feels like a quarter from grandma. I remember reading somewhere in one of the spiels about charitable contributions that donating $10,000 to one charity has significantly more value than donating $1 each to 10,000 charities. I feel like the same principal applies to the old v new rebate system. But I also see this as a guy who has worked at small business and as a former small business owner... and having visited Riv HQ. I don't believe this is some sort of scheme to pad anyone's salary. I have no doubt that Riv spends a lot of time financially treading water. Giving away a bunch of merchandise in the first quarter of every year under the old system can't be helpful. Spreading that dispursement out in small chunks throughout the year has got to be easier to absorb. I'd rather have the occasional $5-10 than have them discontinue the rebates all together. There are places I shop because they're cheap but my attraction to Riv goes beyond that. The rebate is gravy. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Pavement/dirt; fat/skinny; hard/soft: what are your likes?
Sort of a side track from the OP but regarding wheel size trends... My wife has a Kona brand commuter type bike. She's 5'3. The frame's a 50cm or so (I forget exactly and it's not available to measure at the moment). It has 700c wheels. The top of the back wheel is level with the bottom of the seat. It has fenders and a rear rack. The rack is so far above the braze-ons that it made more sense to zip-tie it to the seat rails. It's a perfect example of why wheel size as a trend is foolish. The wheels are way to big for the bike... poor design. The wife's Betty Foy is 650b and is much more proportionally appropriate. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] PDX Saturday Ride?
Putting out the feelers to see if any PDX Rivsters are interested to get out for a ride this Saturday. I'm available until about 3pm. [RBW] Re: Every Day Carry - Here's Mine, What's Yours?
I'm a stay-home dad so up until about a year ago my EDC was a large diaper bag full of supplies to keep my toddler happy. Once he learned to use the toilet I was able to shed a bunch of the kid stuff from my EDC. At that time I bought one of the Riv Swiss Medic bags. It's an excellent size to carry the daily essentials and have enough room for pre-school-age-kid stuff. What I carry in the Riv bag herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/65911722@N06/6763052503/. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne 56cm question
My impression is that 2TT vs 1TT is almost as divisive as low trail vs high trail. I like both. If I were looking for a 1TT 56 Sam I might call around to bike shops that are known to stock Rivs. Search the forum archive, or there might be a list on the Riv site. Also, try call Riv HQ. They're all great folks. There might be some wisdom in the idea that if you have to do a special order from Waterford to make the leap and go with an Atlantis or AHH, but experience has taught that that mentality can be a slippery slope. [RBW] Re: my death valley ride report (in progress)
Inspiring posts. I have family in Barstow. The wife, kids and I spend a week or so there (Barstow) every year. I've thought about bringing a bike but haven't gone to the effort to get it there. I was mostly thinking of riding around town and the desert immediately around town, but this has me thinking about s24o or perhaps the s72h mini-tour. [RBW] Bar Tape
I love that for relatively cheaply ($10-$35) I can change out bar tape and not only change the look of my bikes I can change the feel too. I've tried the Newbaums and Soma tapes from Riv. I've got a couple rolls of their Japanese tape sitting on my parts shelf for future use. I've also tried a rubbery type tape with Bontrager branding. I haven't disliked any of the tapes I've tried, and I've kind of enjoyed their differences. I think the next 2 on my list to pick up are Fizik Microtex and Lizardskins DSP. I would be interested to hear from anyone who's used either of these regarding if/how/why you liked them. Does anyone have a bar tape that they particularly love? In the spirit of elevating my bag-matcher status... has anyone tried to match bar tape to their green Sackville bags? I assume green cloth wrap + a few coats of amber shellac would get reasonably close. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Growing my moustache (bars)
Those bar ends are great! Cool to have the skills and tools to make such an item. I've only been riding M-bars for a few months. At first I wrapped from the brake levers out. That was the only part of the bar I used. More recently I've been playing with different hand positions... if only to stretch/ change positions briefly. I wanted to try a different color/texture tape too, so I wrapped the whole bar this time around. Will see if the center section of the bar gets used. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Once upon a ride... (a Homage to Ray Hosler Cycling Adventures.)
I was indoctrinated at a very young age not to trespass onto private property. My dad had many stories from his youth (he was raised on a farm near Tulare, CA) of shooting trespassers with rock salt. No questions asked. It was family policy... you see someone you don't know on the farm, you shoot them with the rock salt. It was a relatively small family farm though, not a ranch with hills, trees, and a road system. It was more a situation that the trespassers were there to steal crops. I can't imagine cow theft by bicycle is very common. All that said... I have a friend (no, it's not me) who loves to fish lowland ponds (I do like to fish but I prefer high mtn lakes). Many of the ponds in Western WA are on private land. He regularly trespasses to fish these ponds. He's been caught several times. His default is to play dumb. He's charming in a nerdy sort of way that you might not expect from a trespassing fisherman. It works for him. If I do find myself in a trespassing situation, I'm already committed to the play dumb strategy. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Mountains of the Rose City
Even though we'd never met, list member Norm and I recognized each other from across the street. He was sitting at a sidewalk table in front of a coffee shop and I was walking my bike on the sidewalk to the crosswalk to come meet him. We had connected through the list here. His orange All Rounder and my blue AHH were dead giveaways. We discussed destinations/routes a little bit and were soon on our way. About half a mile up the road there was a sudden and horrible sound from my rear wheel. It was the sound of metal clanging against metal. I slammed on the brakes and looked back. Everything looked ok but the tire was flat before the bike was even stopped. Further investigation led me to a #4 finish nail through the sidewall of my tire. The sound was the nail hitting the seat+chain+fender stays... like a finger strums a harp. Fortunately I had pliers in my tool roll because the nail was in there really tight. The spare tube came in handy too. I got the wheel back together and we were back on the road. Our first real stop was Mt Tabor. We got peek-a-boo views of Mt Hood and a nice clearing provided views toward downtown Portland, but the forest was too dense on the Mt St Helens side to really see any thing. Next stop was Rocky Butte. There's an interesting structure that looks like a castle from the outside, but when you get up to it the castle is full of dirt and is just a lawn and walking path with a spectacular view. Norm and I ate a snack, took a few pics, and soaked in the view. It was time to head home. As I was turning onto my street I was thinking it was perfect timing 'cause it was just about time to dig the lights out of the saddlesack. [RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?
One of the main reasons I bought an AHH is because it fit me so well. I, like you have always had to fiddle with long seat posts, too short TT, stem extensions, etc to get a good fit. And It doesn't even sound like I'm as tall as you (I was on the 65/67 AHH divide... went 65 and happy about it). I don't have a Hunq but I do remember reading somewhere that if an Atlantis is too small go Hunq or Bomba for loaded touring. I think about a Hunq for loaded touring or just to have a fat tire off road bike, but the reality is that anything more than one or 2 night out is not in the cards for a while and the off roading I'm interested in is do-able with AHH with 40mm tires. In the spirit of spreading out the cost... I bought the AHH as a frame and got components from donor bikes and have been upgrading slowly. Proper fit and being suitable for the intended purpose are equally paramount criteria in my mind. Thinking my bike is cool is a close second. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Fender Frustration
Sam Hill Green When we went into Riv HQ for test rides the wife wanted an Yves Gomes because she thought she wanted a black bike. I wouldn't let her pick black and Vince graciously accepted the challenge to show us frames until she picked a real color. He bent over backwards to drag out frame after frame from all over the shop so we could look at colors. A dozen or so frames into it the wife was still set on black. Vince had an Ah-Ha! moment and brought out a frame painted 'Sam Hill Green'. As soon as she saw it in the sun, she knew that that was the color she wanted. It's a marvelously beautiful color. It's way too nuanced to really be captured in a photo. Depending on the light it can appear anywhere from a rich olive to almost silver. It's got sparkly flecks that make the paint look 3D. And the red tires + silver accessories set it off. It's not nearly as showy with black/gum tires. I was tempted to get my AHH in the same color but the wife was clear that we were not going to have matchy-match bikes. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. *there's more to bikes than how much they weigh.* * * Yeah, like aerodynamics. :-) My bro-in-law is a wannabe racer type. Bicycles are one of the few things we have in common. But the reality is that we don't have that in common either. We always end up talking bikes at family gathering but it's more like we tell each other what bike related things we've been up to. [RBW] Re: Hennessy Hammocks for bike camping
I've been using one for a few years. There was a learning curve, but now it's quick to set up and I sleep great. The hardest part is finding 2 trees the right distance apart, that aren't too big or too small, and that don't have obstacles between them (bushes, rocks, baby trees). I use a foam insulation pad + sleeping bag and have been wanting for an under quilt in snowy/cold/windy conditions, but most nights I sleep better in the hammock than I ever did in an on-the-ground tent. I like my HH and plan to use it for many more years but if I were to start over in the world of camping hammocks I would probably go with a Warbonnet Hammock http://warbonnetoutdoors.com/index.php instead. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar: crotch-worried
I was in a similar between sizes type predicament for an AHH. 2 Riv employees suggested I go small and 2 other Riv employees suggested I go large. I posted the Q on the list here as well as speaking to a few Riv owners around town. The general consensus was to go small. Regardless, I was planning to go large. At the last second I decided to order the smaller size. Now that I've been riding the bike for a few months I believe I made the better choice. But I also believe that going large would not have been the wrong choice... it just would have had different pros and cons. Something to consider... and I've only figured this out recently... I've had more bike-fit/comfort issues related to TT length than stand over height. Another way to get to the bottom of this would be to go to Walnut Creek for a test ride. Re: [RBW] Re: Odd New Bike (HS)
would hate to see Rivendell bicycles degenerate into mere stylistic whimsey. Don't get me wrong... I most definitely love the ride and fit of my AHH but I also love it's stylistic whimsey. One of the things that continues to draw me toward the riv thing is their willingness to do things for style and whimsey. examples off the top of my head... the lugs could be way more plain, but they're not... great effort went into those cut outs 2-tone paint job... one color would protect the steel just as well as 2 and filling those windows is completely unnecessary.. but it looks so good Look at any riv head badge... there are many simpler ways to mark a frame Special edition Phil Rivy hubs... even the product description says the cutouts are for looks canvas bags... there are stronger, lighter, cheaper, more waterproof, more UV resistant, more durable fabrics out there... but none of them are as stylish as canvas. Even 2TT could arguably fall under stylistic whimsey I think stylistic whimsey one of the things many of us like so much about these bikes. But I don't know many Riv owners in persons... maybe I'm the vain one. Or maybe I have a different definition of stylistic whimsey Either way, I'm on the edge of my seat to see how this thing builds up. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Mudflap in or out?
I use waxed hand sewing thread (Hemingway Bartlett V-346 or the beeswax + hemp twine from Riv) and hand sew leather flaps with a straight stitch to the inside of the fender through pre-drilled holes in the fender. I've been doing it for several years in Seattle and now in Portland without issue. I think the issue of the abrupt lip created by the edge of the leather interfering with water draining out is over thinking it. My wife and I ride in rainy/wet conditions regularly and the water drains out fine. I could imagine it catching snow but I don't think it'd ever be a real issue that caused problems. Maybe someone on here who ride a lot in the snow has experienced otherwise? As for leaves... I occasionally get leaves caught in my derailers, brakes, kickstand, chainrings and in my fenders but I don't ever remember leaves getting caught on the mudflap. I Think it boils down to how you want the line between fender flap to look. I like the clean look of the flap on the inside. It looks more intentional and less like an afterthought. I've thought about cutting a nice curve on the top of the flap and sewing it on the outside of the fender with a zig-zag stitch, but that seemed like more work with no real benefit, so I've never done it. I tried using aluminum rivets once but it looked cumbersome... like an afterthought. The hand stitching looks crafty and Amish. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. P.S. Where does one get those spacers Riv shows in their video? They can be found on the fastener isle of any hardware store... look for a drawer marked spacers. You want M5 spacers for standard rack and fender mounts. M5 is the diameter. They come in a handful of widths. I use aluminum but they also have stainless steel. [RBW] Riv Intro
Had family in town this past weekend. My sister rides bikes and had expressed interest go on ride during her visit. Like many folks, she rides road racing type bikes but she doesn't race. The only bike we have that's close to her size is my wife's Betty Foy w/ alba bars, brooks B68 and 42mm Hetres. Needless to say it's pretty much the opposite of her bikes at home with their skinny tires, low bars, etc. The first thing she says when she gets on the Betty Foy is This bike is so comfortable. Throughout the ride she kept commenting about how great it was to ride a bike that was comfortable. Her highest praise came at the end of the ride, which was only about 90-minutes, when she said My butt doesn't even hurt. She never went as far as suggesting that she might trade one of her racer bikes for something more country but I'm pretty sure a Riv-ish seed was planted in fertile ground this weekend. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] WTB Bolt-On + High Flange Hubs
I have no convincing explanation as to why I prefer bolt-on wheels over quick release. I've never heard a story of a QR failure. I've never had mechanical issues with QR myself. I just like bolts... I like how they look, I like to feel them tighten, I like their elemental mechanical simplicity. Sure, I have bikes with QR wheels and there's even a QR seat post clamp on one bike in my stable, but I go with bolts where possible. I'm looking for a set of hubs for my AHH. My fantasy hubs would be high flange with cut-outs, a cassette rear (135mm) and bolts. I could be swayed to a freewheel if the bolts, high flange and cut-outs are there. I've found several suitable options for the front but the rear is proving to be more difficult to track down. I emailed Rich at RBWHQ to ask about a bolt conversion for their Phil Rivy hubs, but no such conversion exists. Hope has a bolt kit for their rear hubs. But it's set up for disc brakes. I could leave the disc off but don't really want to spend that kind of money for a hub that isn't what I want... I've found several other options that aren't quite what I want for less money than a Hope. I'm wondering if anyone on the list either has a suitable set of hubs (or even just a rear) they'd like to sell or if anyone knows of a currently available hub that meets the above criteria. I was tough 'cause there wasn't much I could do other than comfort her and explain how to avoid it happening again. My wife has a sparkly green Betty Foy. My 5-year-old daughter often laments that she too would like a sparkly green pretty bike with hand brakes. This could be that bike. The capacity to attach a real rack/basket would be great. She (daughter) has a little flowery plastic basket zip tied to the h-bars, but it's not nearly big enough to carry the ensemble of dolls and doll accessories that she consistently wants to bring to the park. $250 for a whole bike sounds like a deal... even if racks, fenders, and front brake are aftermarket add-ons. [RBW] Re: Shellac Question
I've tried fixing dark spots by brushing on denatured alcohol... it's a can of worms I would recommend NOT opening. I've tried it twice. First time I ended up giving the whole thing (cork grips) a bath in denatured alcohol and starting over with thin coats. There was a little marbling effect left over from the botched attempt but now that the grips have been in use for over a year it's a non-issue. Second time was on a coat rack made of curly maple. Again I applied amber shellac too thick and tried to fix it by brushing den-alco on the dark spots. It got really ugly (splotchy) really fast. I ended up sanding the whole thing back to bare wood and starting over with thin coats of clear shellac to let the curly grain shine through better. The grips in the pics look great! I imagine if you put them on as-is and started riding, any short comings in the shellac will soon be minimized to a non-issue with a little busage. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: My favorite photo-capture of the year
Love the glassy water with the reflected fall colors. The bike's pretty nice too. I set my new AHH up with a small Sacksville Saddlesack hanging off the seat. I'm thinking to add a small front rack+bag to give a little more carrying capacity and to spread the load out a bit, so I don't want to just get a bigger saddle bag. I anticipate the occasional S24O once the weather warms a bit but until then I want to keep Mr. Hilsen set up for fair weather day touring, so I'm not ready for a big racks or panniers. Your set up looks about right. Is that a Mark's Rack + Trunksack on the front? If not, what is it? Cheers. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Fancy Hub Conundrum: Chris King vs. White Industries vs. Hope
I have a Hope rear hub on one bike. Like others have said, it is loud. I like the sound though... it sounds mechanical and solid. The coasting buzz was just a bonus. My reasons reasons for buying it were more vain... 1) it came in anodized gold. and 2) The allen bolts (rather than QR) look really cool. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
