[RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?

2018-08-08 Thread T Cal
I have a Rohloff on my Jones LWB Plus. The bike's main purpose is
bikepacking. I'm happy with the setup. I may end up dropping the gearing
down to have the low be lower than officially sanctioned. I find that I
use gear 1 way more than gear 14.

[RBW] Joe Appaloosa, MIT Atlantis versus Jones SWB

2018-07-17 Thread T Cal
I have a relatively new Ti jones plus lwb diamond frame with truss fork and
rohloff hub. I already owned several rivs: QB, ram, Clem L, appa/mystery bike,
Sam Hilbourne. My Sam is setup as the most off-roadish of the five. To me, the
Jones rides quite different and has very different capabilities. It is more
versatile and at least as comfortable. The jones climbs anything and goes over
everything. In June I did a week+ mixed terrain backpacking trip in England.
The jones was fantastic. Any of my rivs would have worked less well - much less
well on some parts. I love the rivs, but the Jones, to me, is a different
animal.

[RBW] Re: pinching fenders and Quickbeam clearances

2018-06-03 Thread T Cal
To me, the challenge with metal fenders on a quickbeam is accommodating
needed fore-aft space so the wheel can be removed/inserted without complete
tire deflation. SKS fenders can also be cut/trimmed without worrying about
crack initiation and propagation. I much prefer the
look/weight/functionality of metal fenders over plastic fenders. That
said, have metal fenders (honjo/berthoud/VO) on every one of bikes except
the quickbeam.

[RBW] Re: Ottolock Initial Reviews???

2018-05-25 Thread T Cal
I use Ottolocks and like them. I have several, short and long. Generally
the short works fine for me with a single bike and locking to a rack or
thin pole. Longer for multiple bikes and/or bigger poles. I don't know
how easy they are to defeat -- I view them as a theft deterrent, not
prevention. I have significantly more substantial locks for use when
needed. Even with a good lock, I will often use the Otto to lock a wheel
or just a second lock and added bit of deterrent.

Great photos, Matt. I live in Santa Monica and use my Hillborne on the
fire roads. My Rambouillet lives in the Owens Valley / Long Valley and
stays mostly on the road.

Keith -- I agree that we are spoiled in California. Even last year when
the ski mountain got 45 feet of snow, there were plenty of days when my
family went skiing while I went biking. This year there was less snow.
Still plenty of snow for skiing, but the riding all winter was quite good.

[RBW] Re: Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2018-05-06 Thread T Cal
Howdy -- I have a bunch of bikes set up a bunch of ways. I just did a
quick measuring and almost all of them have a distance of 21-22" between
the middle of the handlebar clamp to the tip of the saddle. (FYI, I'm 6'3"
with a pbh around 93cm.) The two exceptions are: my brompton has a
distance of 20" and my mystery bike/appaloosa is close to 24" (it is the
only bike with boscomoose bars on it. all others are noodles, albatross,
or one of the VO non-drop bars -- and two have jones loop-h bars). The two
bikes with jones loop-h bars are a Jones Ti LWB Plus and a Surly Pugsley.
both of those bikes are in the 21-22" clamp-to-saddle tip range, with bars
set at saddle height. Both bikes 'feel' very upright. Bottom line: as a
starting point, I would recommend a bar clamp-to-saddle tip distance that
is in the same range as your existing bikes that you find comfortable.

Re: the jones loop-h bars. I've tried them on a townie bike and didn't
much care for them. I love them on the Jones and Pugsley, but haven't
really liked them in other applications.

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-02 Thread T Cal
My wife owns a Saluki and a Betty Foy -- she loves both, but would probably
pick the Foy if forced to choose.

I have a Quickbeam (had two until today), a Hillborne, a Rambouillet, and
one of the custom "mystery bike" Appaloosa prototypes. Of those, I like
the Quickbeam most in that it is the least replicable by other bikes I
own. I probably like the Appaloosa least -- it also is very unique, but
feels less versatile (perhaps counterintuitively) than the Quickbeam.

[RBW] Re: FS - Orange Quickbeam complete - 64 c-to-c

2018-04-27 Thread T Cal
Quick update to close this thread: The bike and bags are spoken for. The
bike will enjoy a long life in the Pacific Northwest, while the bags head
to the Great Lakes region.
I need to convince myself to sell another 6 bikes or so. I probably will
not sell any other Rivendells, but a few of the bikes might be of interest
nonetheless.
Most likely I will sell my Kogswell P/R and a Miyata 1000 (great classic
touring bike, but I also own a Trek 720 of the same era). The Miyata is
set up in more of a randonneuse style, than touring.
Other bikes under consideration for sale include:

   - nice lugged Paramount with campy nuevo or super record group (don't
recall which). bike is disassembled. I had planned to get the frame
repainted and do a nice restoration.
   - new, never built up Soma Grand Randonneur frame

PM me if you have a particular interest in any of these bikes and want to
know details.

[RBW] Re: FS - Orange Quickbeam complete - 64 c-to-c

2018-04-24 Thread T Cal
Thank you, Matt B, for the link to the geometry chart. This bike is a size
66. I confirmed via top tube measurement, etc.

For reference, my PBH is around 93. I ride with a saddle height of around
82 from the spindle center. (The saddle is set right around 82 in the
picture.)

[RBW] Re: Single Speed in/around LA?

2018-04-24 Thread T Cal
I like Philip's suggestion ;-)

To your question. As an angeleno, I'll second many of the
comments/suggestions made. There is plenty you can do on a SS to fill up
all your time/energy/enthusiasm. AND there is plenty in addition for which
gears would be most welcome. If you are looking to get into the hills,
even just on the fire roads, things can get a steep for a sustained
distance. I used to live in Austin. The biggest difference to me is the
longer, more sustained, climbs -- leaving from the beach in Santa Monica or
Malibu and heading into the Santa Monica mountains gives a pretty steady
2000' elevation climb.
