[RBW] Price drop: NOS Heron Road, 60cm, $800-->$700

2024-04-20 Thread Tom Goodmann
Never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork only (no headset; no bottom
bracket). Designed by Grant at Rivendell as a collaboration with Rona
Components, then owned by Ted Durant; built at Waterford. This beautiful
blue-green road frame bears serial number B00055, and was built in February
2000 with Reynolds 531 tubing. (For further information, all of the
original Heron web pages are still accessible:
http://www.heronbicycles.com/geometry.html).
Built for then-available short reach brakes, 28mm tires & fenders; 30mm
tires will also fit, depending on actual dimensions and rims. (As Jan Heine
has said, plushness is more significant than width). For wider tires, some
owners have happily converted these to 650b using long reach brakes that
were not available when this was made.
The frame bears only the slightest mark on the inside of one rear
dropout, probably a sign of having been fitted with a wheel at some point;
it is otherwise pristine with all decals and the Heron head badge in
perfect condition. $700, plus shipping and insurance.
I'd really like to move this along and am only selling because I am
moving . . . and a local friend has offered me a custom Riv road frame. So,
n-1; n+1 = 0.

[RBW] FS: NOS Heron Road frame & fork, 60 cm

2024-04-08 Thread Tom Goodmann
(Reposting as potential sale was not completed). I'm downsizing ahead of an
impending move, and selling a never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork
only (no headset; no bottom bracket). As all of you will know, the bike was
designed
by Grant Petersen at Rivendell, and built by Waterford as a collaboration
with Rona Components, then owned by Ted Durant. The beautiful blue-green
road frame bears serial number B00055, and was built in February 2000 with

Re: [RBW] Philadelphia Bike Expo March 16 - 17

2024-03-18 Thread Tom Goodmann
Echoing Eric: so good to see Roman, James, and Will--and three beautiful
bikes (all of which sold, I believe)--as well as meeting Roberta, Leah,
Pam, Tom, Patty, Paul, Rick (riding a Rom with 38s!) and others at PBE.
Multiple Atlantises and Platys amid the throngs. A very nice event in every
respect; lots of group rides, including Saturday night to Keystone Bicycle
Company for beer and pretzels, our group led by Pam. And seeing the work of
advocates, of component makers, and the bikes of fine builders. Very good
crowds, too, on both days. I'm glad I went. Thanks, Rivfolk!

[RBW] FS: 1994 Bridgestone RB-T, size 59; $500 OBO, plus shipping & insurance

2024-03-08 Thread Tom Goodmann
(With apologies for cross-posting from the iBOB list).
Selling my1994 Bridgestone RB-T. This one is in very good shape, mostly
original, and still a pleasure to ride. Shimano RX100 crank and triple
rings, RX100 front and rear derailleurs, Shimano bar end shifters, Sakae
0-degree/90-degree stem. Comes with Panaracer Pasela 32s and a worn but
serviceable WTB saddle; MKS Sylvan pedals. The original SR CTB handlebars
are sleeved, and were slipping inside the sleeve, so I replaced
them--thanks to a generous member of the iBOB list--with another set of the
same bars to keep the bike close to original. (The original white bar tape
went when I changed the bars; given personal cockpit preferences, I'll
leave them unwrapped, unless requested otherwise). There is a slight dimple
about halfway along the lefthand side of the top tube from a previous
owner, but no paint loss there. Otherwise, the bike is in very good
condition, including nearly all of the decals; even the original shop decal
is intact. It weighs 25.4 lbs as built.

$500 OBO for the complete bike, plus shipping & insurance to be paid by the
buyer. I will be sure to pack with great care. Photos here:

This will be my first time at PBE (I missed all of the years of NAHBS).

Happy to meet up with Rivfolk! (Do we need a secret sign???)

[RBW] Re: Style on the bike

2023-09-09 Thread Tom Goodmann
I empathize, Leah. Not being one for beausage in any area of life, I am
okay with wear and character on boots, but not with chain grease on pants.
You might try various ankle straps; those with velcro seem to have limited
effectiveness, as your experience suggest, and wear out over time. But
there are many others out there that may be more effective, either with an
extended strap mechanism or with a clip design (as seen in old British
films). I'm sure you can find a design that will have you rockin' the 90s
grease-free!

What a good story, Garth! I can remember that moment in time too--sorry
about Rush cancelling, though--including bike touring on those 100-degree
Midwest days on a Schwinn Le Tour. That's a pretty area of Ohio you are in
now, yes, nice for motorcycling too.

Although Mom-and-Pops stores have been replaced by Dollar Generals, the
Driftless is still a beautiful area with a strong sense of itself as a
distinctive region, whatever maps demarcate as state lines, and that river
running through it. There are active randonneuring chapters in WI and MN
and of course seasonal riding any day. Might be home again!

Thank you, both. I tried that one branded as Soma, Wes, and it was too
tall; I'll get hold of Ben's Cycle and confirm things, Garth.

I agree with your thumbs up for Midwestern sensibilities; I'm thinking
seriously about returning to the Driftless area for all the riding and more

[RBW] WTB: Nitto quill adapter, 130mm

Though likely scarce as a horn shed from a unicorn, I wonder whether anyone

it. https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-mtc-quill-for-threadless-stem

I've been on the restock notification list for Riv, understanding the wait
for many things from Nitto.

Thanks for any leads!

Hi Joe,

If you contact Greg Parker, he can get you a frame; the Sportifs are classy
and classic-looking. While they are not designed for this w-i-d-e tire
moment, they sure look like wonderful road bike frames that will
accommodate tires suitable for randonneuring. It'd be great to see them
built up and as bare frames on the Heron web pages!

Excellent post, Leah, and the thread it has inspired; kudos to your LBS and
mechanic too. I can only do a few things at this point, but mean to change
that by signing up for a class at the United Bicycle Institute in Oregon
sometime in the next year, once I step off the work wheel here in May.
Like many, I expect, I've always found even modest mechanical, plumbing,
household, or electrical fixes satisfying, especially since I'm at a screen

[RBW] WTB Heron Randonneur, 59 cm

2021-11-17 Thread Tom Goodmann
As posted over at ibob, this is a quixotic quest, I'm sure, but if anyone
knows of a Heron Randonneur frame for sale, I'd be happy to learn (I see
one out there on CL, but it is a 55 cm frame). I think few of these frames
were made, so the chances are slim.

2021-02-01 Thread Tom Goodmann
HI, Ray; I should have included my location; I'll edit my post. I'm in
Miami in zip code 33155. As I said, a while back I posted this bike for a
slightly higher price and there was no interest in it. Things change!
Well, I'll be happy if it goes to an appreciative new owner, and this is
the best place to find one. Tom

Re: [RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread Tom Goodmann
Bill, thank you for an excellent analytical inquiry, a lesson in clear
thinking and in asking the right questions. I prefer the aesthetics of
quill stems and the ease they offer for making small adjustments in height,
but see that the way toward realizing that objective may be expensive. I'd
be content, then, with a longer steer tube for the threadless stem in order
to have some options using spacers. Like MoVelo, currently I ride with the
bars at a comfortable height reached only via a sloping threadless stem. A
phone call with Mark Nobilette seems in order. --Tom

[RBW] Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread Tom Goodmann
This is a great bike, and not so easily found; and with the help of a local
friend from this list, the cockpit fits me well at the very limit of
spacers. The steerer was cut too short to my liking by the previous owner,
and I am frustrated that the stem is not adjustable, a feature I enjoy with
quill stems. I think the frame was made by Mark Nobilette. Has anyone
converted a threadless steerer to threaded? What do you think?

Thanks, Eric; thanks, Ray. I just found an April 22nd post about Scott
Davis, and so can get them via him or his ebay site, as well as the Compass
tires. I ride Barlow Pass 38s on the Legolas, and like them very much.

wonder why 650b tires of that dimension proved undesirable. Those tires, at
least, are currently unavailable, although I know there are nominal 38s

Happy purchaser here; the seller worked with me nicely on the price when I
asked him to reconsider, and he looked again at the recent eBay Legolas
sale so, after all, no huge mark-up from the previous sale, and a pretty
rare Riv, too.

[RBW] Re: Ram as a light tourer-your experiences?

2015-03-24 Thread Tom Goodmann
Thanks, all, for a discussion that confirms my current effort to buy a Ram
frame and fork. I've been looking for a Heron Road, enjoying a Heron
Touring model already (though not as carefully built up as yours, Olof
Stroh). I got no response to my replies to a CL post for a 58 Heron Road,
but am now after a 60 Ram, getting ready to move on from an RB-T, as I
think the Rambouillet will fit me better. I plan to build it up lightly
for longer local rides, anticipating the flexibility that it shares with
other Rivs. Now, to close the deal! --Tom (Miami, FL)

[RBW] Fishing for a Heron

2015-01-24 Thread Tom Goodmann
I'm so happy commuting on a 59 cm Heron Touring bike (acquired from a
certain auction site) that I am on the hunt for a Road/Rally (60 cm, I
think), or Randonneuring model (can't find a geo chart for this model), in
case anyone has one for potential sale, either as f/f etc, or as a complete
bike.

Thanks for any leads and suggestions~

Re: [RBW] Re: Minneapolis country bike rally

2014-09-30 Thread Tom Goodmann
Sounds like a wonderful weekend, describing a potential future for so many
communities to begin planning and building as MSP has already done, and
continues to do. Miami has less infrastructure, and not nearly such a
well-developed bicycling culture, but we're getting there via efforts such
as Critical Mass rides, places such as Magic City Bicycle Collective, and
groups such as Emerge Miami. Also, we get somewhat less snow than the Twin
Cities. :) --a fact that makes such a commitment from the MSP community
all the more impressive. Wish I could have made it there! --Tom Miami, FL

On Tue, Sep 30, 2014 at 12:27 PM, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
thill@gmail.com wrote:

We broke the MCBR weekend into 4 parts. Friday night we rode to a Saint
Paul establishment for dinner and drinks. I think there were around 15 of
us at the start. There were at least two Rivs in attendance: Marc's
gorgeous Hunq and Tim's first-year Riv Road. Lillian was riding a San
Marcos. Hope I'm not forgetting anyone. The rest of the group was riding
various other brands of Country Bike.

Saturday morning, we tested several fat bike models on some dirt trails in
Fort Snelling state park. Some park employees and other passersby came
over to try the bikes. The new Surly Ice Cream Truck seemed to be a hit.
Highlight for me: My wife's non-cycling 61yo aunt rode the XS ICT over some
challenging off-trail terrain and smiled the whole time.

Saturday afternoon, the group rode a section of the Minnesota River
Bottoms. This is basically a mostly flat, non-technical dirt trail along
the Minnesota River. The trail is unofficial and mostly maintained by
volunteers. Unfortunately, the state park people recently cleared the
portion of the trail that runs through the park. Their hearts were in the
right place, but it looks like they used a bulldozer, and just pushed sand
and trees around, leaving the trail worse for the wear in places. Most of
us were on fat bikes or mountain bikes, but Sean showed up with a Hilsen
and JB tires, which handled the dirt with ease, and made the rest of us
 feel kinda silly.

Sunday was the pavement ride. We started from HC, and followed the
Minnehaha Creek bike trail to the Minneapolis chain of lakes. One of the
ride participants lost her wallet and phone the night before at an ice
cream shop in Uptown, so we stopped there to ask if they'd found it.
Luckily, they had, and everything seemed to be in order. We had a small
conference on where to go next, and decided to head to a nearby coffee shop
that features a gay leather/bondage theme. I restocked my supply of
leather-scented body wash. So that was fun. From there, we hit the Bryant
Ave bikeway, Loring Park, Downtown Minneapolis, Nicollet Mall, Hennepin Ave
bridge, Saint Anthony Main, Stone Arch Bridge, University of Minnesota, the
new Dinkytown greenway, U of MN transitway, Como Park, Frogtown, downtown
Saint Paul, then across the river to climb the infamous Ohio St hill,
Cherokee Park, followed by a thrilling descent on Hwy 13 into Mendota. I
said my goodbyes and headed home from there, happy to have shown the riders
such a broad cross-section of the Twin Cities amazing cycling opportunities.

[RBW] Re: Was Redemption, now fly fishing

2014-08-27 Thread Tom Goodmann
I started out combining the two with a multipiece strapped to my old LeTour
while attending grad school in Indiana, where I first saw someone fly
fishing in a small lake, and thought it the coolest activity I'd ever seen.
I still bikefish in Miami--there's a canal or a lake in a park nearly
everywhere you turn--and always keep an old glass rod in the car on my way
to anywhere around the area. Biking aside, this summer I fished for a day
while in Iceland for a meeting, catching many small brown trout on the
Varma south of Reykjavik. Am now just back from Montana, where I attended
a Project Healing Waters benefit with Greg Brown performing; we fished the
upper Big Blackfoot, where we caught lots of beautiful West Slope cutts,
and then Hound Creek where it runs through one of those huge ranch
properties--lots of browns, a few up up to 20 inches. Wow. All of us
fishing cane rods, the fly fishing analog to lugged steel frames!

purchased from another member of this list).

Changing the tires was no big deal. The bulk of the time was spent
adjusting the fenders to fit around the fatter rubber. That involved, among
other things, using a Dremel to cut off the protruding end of the daruma
bolt that holds the front fender onto the fork crown. Yes, the 35s needed
every millimeter of clearance I could get (the rear wheel wouldn't even
spin when I first put it in, due to a lack of clearance, even though the
 28s had gobs of room).

Results are in the photos here:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/campyonlyguy/sets/72157639957181314/

I haven't had a chance to ride it yet, other that a spin up and down the
block, but from an appearance standpoint alone it was worth it. The fatter
tires certainly fill out the fenders much better.

Ride report once I've had a chance to get it on the road.

At this early point, then, Jim, a simple Thanks! for putting the idea out

wrote:

Starting a new thread to discuss the Riv/country bike rally to be held in

I envision everybody coming in to town on Friday the 26th for a
meet-and-greet at Hiawatha Cyclery, then spending the next two days riding
around the twin cities. Hiawatha Cyclery, which is in south Minneapolis
near the airport and light rail line, will be the center of the action.
That's the extent of the itinerary at this point.

If you're coming from out of town, I'd be happy to receive your bike and
ship it back to you (I only use UPS). Depending on my level of involvement,
I may charge you for assembly/disassembly/packing labor, and UPS shipping
charges. No charge if you just use HC as a drop-off and pick-up point for
your bike, and you arrange your own shipping.

You're on your own for lodging, but I'd be happy to offer opinions on
whether your lodging choice is sensible in terms of distance, bike
friendliness, etc. I am tentatively planning to offer camping in my back
yard. I hope other local Riv types will offer spare beds, couches, floors,
backyards, and other forms of hospitality to our visitors.

I am happy to answer your questions. Please keep in mind that we have 8
months to nail down the details (and 8 months for plans to change). If
you're enthusiastic now in January, please try to pace yourself so you
still have some enthusiasm left in September. There's a significant risk of
over-committing to summer plans during this gloomy time of year. Past
experience suggests that if you and I spend several hours emailing back and
forth, answering every question you can think of in January, there's an
approximately 0% chance of you being able to make the trip in September. If
you think you're actually going to come, then please ask your questions. If
you're on the fence - that's cool, you have plenty of time to decide -
please keep the correspondence to a minimum until you're more committed to
 coming.

Thanks, Minh, and all; I'm really happy with this one, so glad that Frank
offered it to me here locally. Our South Florida roads are--ahem--not the
most friendly for bicyclists, but the cycling community here is more active
each year, and the weather is mostly cooperative, rain being the only
natural hazard (and the occasional hurricane). Everything I have read
about the QB feels spot-on: it just makes you want to go, and it may well
become (as Frank predicts) my daily commuter. The Pasela 35s feel good,
but I will try bigger tires too--he had Conti Cross tires on it, I think,
which made me want to find paved trails, or more challenging terrain. BTW,
very impressive, Ray Shine, that you can ride Mt. Tam on the QB--suddenly,
it's an All-Rounder! (As any bike can be--the engine being a big factor,
as GP offers in *Just Ride*). So far, in this flat terrain, 40/17 gives me
an easy-going ride, and I think I'll appreciate a 16 in back to let me dig
a bit deeper. This is a great bike; will post more photos as I sort it
out; it's a well-chosen green, to boot. Thanks, Rivfolk. --Tom

aficionados of various spots and stripes. As I think has been said on this

cane rod. It's a preference, a choice that feels good for me, and brings me
in contact with very good folks on the road and on the water. My
priorities include improving my skills, and introducing others to these two
pleasures of fly fishing and cycling (and all the various maladies
attendant).

By the way, I've seen both of those enjoyable episodes in which you appear,
Ron; some on this list may not know that in the world of vintage fly

able to turn clunk into smooth clicking again, and very generous with

Right on all counts, Mike: we can all just ride. I think The Rules are
pretty funny too--and likely read so for many followers, though maybe not
for all. It has been great to see the cycling community here in Miami
become a) much more visible and b) much more varied in recent years,
including (just to name a few) bike polo players (who started up a local
bike collective repair shop), a strong fixed-gear set; weekend fast club
riders; students of all stripes; people who use a bike to get around, per
need. A pretty good mix is now more evident of ages, ethnicities, genders,
budgets--and bikes. I just happen to be among those who have discarded
carbon (and aluminum), reducing my rides to steel. And yet the number of
bikes has multiplied!? I do appreciate the rule that says the ideal number
of bikes is n + 1 . . . .

phone at the taco truck.. Brencho was super cool about it and for the rest
of the ride the on going joke was , Hey Brencho this would look nice why
won't you take a picture of it on your phonenevermind.

 All in good fun.

We roll over to Rivendell with Duy, Wilson, Mike and his friend Matt
waiting for us and surprisingly the rest of the Grin Fundo camping folks.

We purposely didn't try to overlap both events but I guess that's what
happens when you don't pay attention to dates and stuff.

The Grin Fundo group rode up before and we caught up along the way. Got
to talk to a handful of folks on the list and even (gasp) take a few
 pictures.

After the Junction the groups parted ways and we made our way up to the
abandon rancho. Dark was settling in and we ended up pitching tents in 30
 mph winds!

Dinner was shared as we made spam musubi and The Dav. A fire roasted
banana with chocolate chops, small marshmallows and *wait for it* whisky in
 it's pudding like goodness.

We slept very weary knowing that at any moment a shadowy ghost of the old
ranchers could come by and wake us at any moment!

The next day we were lucky enough to find ourselves over a blanket of fog
that cleared once we rode down it and back home.

Great trip. Looking forward to doing again next summer!

Pictures proved that we didn't die from ghostly ranchers:

Thanks to all for the fine suggestions; good choices, and for the long haul
too. John Stowe: you put that front rack to many good uses, carrying two
loads we cannot yet get in South Florida: Fat Tire, and things from Trader
Joe's. We keep hearing happy rumors . . . .

drop it back on the rack after class.

Of course, piling on a front rack works, too:

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for Saddle Bag--mostly for books

2013-08-23 Thread Tom Goodmann
Loads of good ideas, as usual on this list. Tom, a photo would be great; I
like the home remedy! Several recommendations, then, for the medium or
large Saddlesack (also a handsome bag). Swift Industries Mini Rolltop
panniers are the other choice I have in mind: MUSA; waxed canvas option;
two panniers for the price (+ options) of one Saddlesack. Really a question
of preference, as both are attractive options.

 Jim,

I use a bungee ball on the bottom of my large SaddleSack. The cord loops
through the leather on the bottom of the bag and around the top of the
rack. It holds nice and secure. It's not exactly quick release, but it's
quickER release... personally I find it more time-consuming (we're talking
seconds here) but less irritating than the Ortlieb pannier system. I use my
SaddleSack for commuting and take the bag off whenever I leave the bike,
including for quick stops at the grocery store on the way home. It may be
too much of a fiddle for some people though.

Before I thought of the bungee ball I was using a John's Irish strap. That
was also OK, but it's more difficult to feed the strap through the buckle
than it is to engage a bungee ball, so the bungee ball was a step in the
right direction. It was further improved when I started using a
half-cut-off zip tie to feed the bungee cord through the rack. I'm not
explaining this very well—be happy to post a photo if it helps.

[RBW] Re: Slightly OT: Motorcycle Riding and Bicycles

2013-07-21 Thread Tom Goodmann
BSWP--Andrew--says it well: the two kinds of two-wheelers complement each
other. Besides my Sam, Heron Touring, Bridgestone RB-T and XO-1, I ride a
2010 BMW F650GS (the detuned version of the 800 twin); I've been happy on
an F650 single before that, and a '94 K75S, the smothest triple I've
ever tried. I'd like to try one of those Moto Guzzi V7s, Ted: light and
relatively simple, as you say, amid today's powerful and heavy motorcycles.
And FWIW, my wife got me *into* motorcycling! --Tom

I rode a Vespa 300 for a couple years, then switched to a MotoGuzzi V7

found that learning to ride a motorcycle properly (starting with a good MSF
course) has significantly improved my bicycle handling. I have a very bad
habit of looking down at the road surface in a corner. You need to read
that surface well before you get there, pick a line, and be looking where
you want to exit the corner as you enter. The saying, the bike goes where
you are looking becomes far more apparent when you have 40 hp driving the
rear wheel of a 400 pound bike. (I can't even fathom what 100 hp feels
like...) I saw a great example yesterday. As I slowed to stop at an
intersection (2-way stop my direction), a cyclist coming from the left
turned into the street I was on at a very high speed. (Lycra, carbon bike,
shaved legs, earphones plugged in, but no judgement here.) It happened
very quickly, but my recollection is he saw me, panicked, looked down, and
hit the pavement. He may have clipped his pedal - I think I heard a loud
clack just before he went down. To his credit, at least he knew how to
fall without breaking his collar bone. And he didn't hit me, thankfully.

I'm actually not riding the Guzzi now. Made a deal with my wife and am
driving a Honda S2000, instead, when I'm not on a bicycle.

The shoe side of SPDs offers a nice platform, and the dual-use design is
appealing; plus, the darn things just look good. I don't know whether I'll
clip in again any time soon, all the same. The MKS touring pedals are
classics, I agree; weirdly (I admit), I've been looking at MKS folding
pedals (FD-7), which also offer a nice, flat platform at more or less the
weight of a Grip King. I'm riding the latter right now on my new Hillborne,
and love 'em.

The MKS top o' line track pedals (Keirin approved!!) were also very nice
but I found them too narrow for the bunion on my right foot, at least with
straight up-and-down TA Cyclotourist crank arms.

My brother loves old mtb pedals from the '80s and very early '90s and old
 BMX pedals.

Now it's Shimano (accept no substitute) spds and Looks.

Nice bike; I love the clean lines, and the endless good stories of recycled

Yesterday was gorgeous day; today it is raining and thundering. After
wrapping the Albatross bars on the Motobecane Super Mirage, I went for an
early morning ride. The weather and the ride were perfect. However this
makeover and ride would not have happened without the inspiration and
knowledge I have received and continue to get from this group. Thank you.

The Motobecane Super Mirage circa 1976 belonged to my father-in-law. When
it didn't sell at a yard sale, he gave it to me. I didn't like the way it
rode with the original drop bars and saddle. It sat in my shed for a few
years. After reading many of the posts on this group and seeing the
photos, I was inspired to fix the bike up Rivendell style and get it back
on the road. I overhauled the wheels, bottom bracket and pedal bearings,
replaced all the cables and brake pads, installed new 27 x 1 1/4 tires,
Brooks B68 saddle, and Rivendell cockpit (Nitto Albatross bars, Nitto
Periscopa stem, Newbaum maroon colored bar tape (matches the head badge),
Shimano MTB silver brake levers). I left the pletscher rack, Weinmann
brakes, Suntour stem mounted shifters, Suntour V-GT rear derailer and
kickstand. I also left on the county bike registration sticker that
 expired in 1978.

The Newbaum bar tape feels great; I rode yesterday without gloves.
Though, I usually ride with gloves to protect my hands in a fall, the bike
 lends itself to gloveless riding!

I adore riding this bike as currently configured. I thank everyone for
the inspiration and knowledge needed for me to do this.

Though I do not imagine riding this bike in the rain, I will look into
whether I can squeeze in fenders. I also want to fit a bottle cage or two
for carrying water on longer rides. Also still on the list is finishing
 the bar tape with twine.
