[RBW] FS: Sam Hillborne 51/52 (?)cm $2000/OBO

2024-04-24 Thread johnb
This is a report of this
(https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/ecnmO2IgLLw). New price
same bike. I am vague on the size since there was a spirited discussion in
the original posting.

Measurement from center of BB to top of TT is 20". Center of BB to top of
Seat Tube is 20.25". Same for TT. I apologize for the confusion. I bought
the bike 3rd hand and never measured it. I just took the sellers word and
quite honestly I could have just misremembered it. I am 5'6" with a 28"
inseam. I have Compass 650Bx48 tires on the bike and I barely clear the TT.

Build includes:

   - New Albion cranks 46/30
   - Paul brake levers
   - Tektro brakes
   - Hand built (velocity/Velo Orange) wheels/Rene Herse 48 tires
   - 9-speed cassette
   - Acera derailleur
   - Cambium Special Edition C-17 with orange rivets
   - Albatross handlebars
   - Paul thumbies

Will be professionally packed by bike shop.

2019-07-21 Thread johnb
I have a Hinterland Ozette Randonneur Bag that I have had since I got the
Bilenky 4 years ago. I no longer use it. So I am selling the bag/rack and
decaleur as a bundle with free shipping or separately. The rack is a Nitto
M-18. The decaleur works with Pearl and Technomic stems.

Bundle $200/BO with free shipping

Bag $125/BO
Rack - $50/BO
Decaleur - $50/BO

Pictures here
- https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0ap45amcgav5kbk/AAC_A0uBhIauS7dy3bOQdJX_a?dl=0

I will update with pictures of the decaleur early next week.

Mike,

I have the hinterland Ozette and love it. My wife has the new Sugarloaf and
loves it. Both are built to last, very light, great looking and super
useful. I may pull the trigger on a Sugarloaf for myself for commuting. I
cannot recommend them enough.

bag. They are waxed canvas which Swift is no longer using. They are tan
canvas with maroon. The panniers were part of one of their early Christmas
specials with high wheeler image on the flap. The Rando bag has a

Roll-top Panniers - http://builtbyswift.com/shop/roll-top-panniers/
Ozette handlebar bag - http://builtbyswift.com/shop/ozette-randonneur-bag/

The second Ozette bag is Navy with Royal Blue trim, yellow sides and front
pocket and orange rear-facing pockets. This one has a Berthoud handlebar
attachment

https://flic.kr/s/aHskocWKcT

I would like to sell the panniers and waxed canvas bag as a set. I am
asking $200 for the set plus shipping. They are truly practical collector's
items.

The Navy handlebar bag is $125 plus shipping.

[RBW] Re: Compass 26 tire vs. Soma New Express 26 tire.

2014-03-06 Thread johnb
I have the 1.75 Compass tires on my Atlantis and the 1.5 Compass on the
Rambouillet. I cannot say enough good things about the ride. Excellent!
Durability seems pretty good. I have had one flat on the Atlantis and a
highway with steel from a steel belt puncturing the rear tire (of
course...). Other than that, no flats in 2+ years with the Atlantis (maybe
3500 miles).

On Wednesday, June 19, 2013 6:26:05 PM UTC-4, Clayton wrote:

I just did a picture comparison between the two. They have exactly the

Soma's are cheaper by about ten to 20 bucks and come in terracotta and
cream as well as black. I think Compass tires and the Somas are the same
tire, made by Panaracer. Does anyone know for sure?
The terra cotta would look groovy on my olive green Atlantis.;)

Great fit, look good, pretty rain resistant, well made (used to be in

under the tail, this acting as an anchor. I no longer have a 'tail, but I
 do have long hair.)
 2. Short bill. (I do fold the bills to shorten them, but would prefer not
to. My customs have 4 cm bills, which is about right. Riv caps have bills
 way too long.)
 3. Well made -- thickish, absorbent fabric, good elastic, good seams. (RIv
 is good here.)
 4. Sightly (as opposed to unsightly); defined as a happy mean between
excessively tweedish and excessively roady-ish (ancient team logos and
colors are great; Molteni outstanding). (Riv is good here, but would prefer
 more variety in logo.)
 5. Not yuppie priced. (RIv good here.)

I've used Rivs, customs (little package dot com) and Nashbar's retros
(Molteni!) as well as Walz (their winter cap is great; not so much their
summer ones -- don't stay on my head! The Nashbars are the best (for me) so
far, but they are rather cheaply made.

Anything giving 1 thru 3 is worth considering.

 Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Wooden Fenders for Atlantis - photos / suggestions

I have a pair of flat Woodie's fenders
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbusteed/sets/72157633795911335/). I agree
with all the comments pro and most of the negative ones also. They look
amazing. I found them incredibly easy to install. They do a decent job in
moderate rainfall and if it is raining harder than that, there is nothing
that is going to keep the bike from getting drenched IMHO. I also thought
that Woody was easy to deal with and a prompt shipper.

They blend in nicely and there are so many cool parts on that Surly.
Andrew, those fenders your dad made are really beautiful and classy. Tom,

They are both black/copper rivets. One is 3 months old. The other is 8-9

$100 with free shipping. Both are in great shape. Will post pictures if

[RBW] Re: Winter Shoe Recommendations?

I have had great luck/comfort with LL Bean 'Bean Boot' mocs

Warm, wind-proof, waterproof (within reason), reasonably priced. Made in

 Hi All,

I'm looking for some recommendations for winter riding shoes or boots. For
just plain old platform style pedals, not clipless SPD pedals. And by
winter I mean cold weather. Not West Coast cold (which we refer to as
chilly in these parts) but Minnesota cold. Something that will keep my
feet dry and warm down to zero degrees Fahrenheit and below. Right now I'm
using Tioga Surefoot and Spyder pedals on my two most ridden bikes (if it
makes a difference). And in warmer weather I typically ride in Adidas Samba
Millenniums or Keen sandals. Any recommendations are appreciated.

 Thanks!

[RBW] Saddlebags and smaller bikes

2012-06-07 Thread johnb
I am challenged by short legs. I have a 52cm Atlantis with 26 wheels with
a medium saddlesack and SKS fenders. Because the bike frame is small and
the saddle sack is medium, the bag rubs back and forth throughout the ride
against the fender. When I put a rear rack on, it silences the bag but also
cuts 30% of its capacity out since it gets a bit smushed... For the moment,
I am tolerating the back and forth but there are days it bugs the — well
lets just say it gets on my nerves.

So my question, are there good canvas saddlebags that hold tools, tube,
sunscreen and assorted sundries that will fit in my frame?

Any other urban commuter types who've come up with a good backpacking

I have a 52cm frame and it being tax return time, money is not the deciding

[RBW] Front rack ideas

2012-02-15 Thread johnb
Last year I got a new Atlantis for my 50th birthday. Originally, I
outfitted it with a mini front rack with a small trunk sack and a Tubus
Cargo on the back end. I bike commute to work 2-3 days/week. My ride to and
from work involves 1 or 2 — depending on the route — 18% grades (one way
with a cemetery conveniently located at the top of the steepest part).
Having no weight on the front leaves the front a bit jumpy. My thinking is
that if I put my clothes etc in the front, it will be less jumpy.

I have some serious lust in my heart for a Pass and Stow rack for both its
touring capabilities (in theory at least) and its hauling capabilities.
Anyone with PS/Swift Industries/Freight Baggage bag combination experience
I would be *really *interested in your thoughts. That said, any
experiences good or bad with either the Pass and Stow or other bigger front
rack/bag combinations would be greatly appreciated!

[RBW] Re: New Web Site

2011-10-06 Thread johnb
I have found that you can have a bike built with whatever parts you want
whether they are on their site or not just like a LBS. I had my Atlantis
built with Paul Neo-Retro in front and the Touring Cantis in back with the
Canti levers. It was a sweet set up. You probably have to call to arrange
this though.

[RBW] Re: Coupled Ram on DC Craigslist

2011-09-09 Thread johnb
As the previous owner of the bike, it is a custom blue/white
highlights paint job over the original camper green due to the SS
couplers. Seller is a nice guy. He bought the bike back in late June.

[RBW] Re: Does anyone use these bags?

2011-07-23 Thread johnb

I too saw them in Austin and thought they were extremely well made and
very good looking.

I don't own any of their bags, but saw them first hand at the NAHBS
2011 in Austin.  My impressions were that they are well made, and the
owner of the company is willing to discuss special needs/requests.  I
really have all the bags I need, but stopped by his booth multiple
times admiring...and wondering if I REALLY had all the bags I need.
My only suggestion is to consider requesting leather reinforcement for
bags that will be placed on the ground often.  Outer canvas wear was
 the only question I had.

(Note they do not show the 52) My PBH is 78cm and this bike fits quite
nicely with the Col de Vies on it. While I would be happy to measure
the basics and you can ask me nitty gritty questions like what is the
head tube angle but I may not be able to provide the answer...

Again, it is a stock build (you would think after last week's sale I
would know exactly what is on the bike but no...)

 Specs:

 - 52cm frame
 - Sugino XD2 crank set (40x32)
 - White Industries Duo (17x19)
 - Velo-Orange hammered fenders
 - Col de Vie tires
 - No saddle
 - Grip King pedals
 - Silver brakes
 - Albatross bars/cork grips/Mt Bike brake levers
 - Nitto stem (10cm?) /seat tube
 - Mark's rack/basket

Price: $1200/OBO + shipping unless you are local to Baltimore/DC.

Bike will move to Craigslist in Baltimore on Thursday evening.

Bike has never been in an accident. Was ridden maybe 2K miles total
(550 in one week in NC in 2009). As noted above, happy to answer any
