Re: [RBW] OT - Help me decide how to spend a day in Sacramento /San Francisco

2016-05-31 Thread René Sterental
RBW is only open on Saturday 10 - 4, so it'll take a good chunk of your day
away from visiting the city.

In addition to everything that's been recommended, I'd just suggest getting
to the city early in the morning and then checking out the parts that
interest you either via public transit or Uber. Any tourist guide to SF
will point out the relevant points to see to get a sense of the city.

The ride over the Golden Gate Bridge is very nice, and between riding,
sightseeing on the way, having lunch in Sausalito or even Tiburon and
taking the Ferry back, will also take about half a day or a bit more. As
suggested, you can also extend it if you'd like. You can also detour to the
Marin Headlands for a great climb and magnificent iconoclastic views of the
city, depending if you want to make your first visit to SF a biking
experience or a more classical sightseeing experience.

Depending on which Saturday in July, and whether you plan to bike or just
sightsee, if I'm free I will try to join you.

BTW, if you want to visit Alcatraz, book the reservation now. It fills up
quickly. Lots to see and do in just one day.

[RBW] OT - Help me decide how to spend a day in Sacramento /San Francisco

2016-05-31 Thread masmojo
Well, I am not from there, but I've visited on several occasions. My first
question would be weekday or weekend!? It makes a big difference! The tours and
Fishermans warf are a mad house on the weekend and going to Alcatraz could burn
up half your day.
That said San Francisco is a foodie town, so do plan on eating! China town
maybe? On Saturdays there's some vendor stalls down by the embarcadero, a
little touristy, but also some unique local artists exhibit there. Then the
inside of the embarcadero building has been turned into a bunch of shops, most
are overpriced, but many are unique local businesses as opposed to the shops at
Fishermans Warf that all seem to sell the same crap.
One thing I enjoy doing is going to the museums there's a couple good ones
within walking distance of downtown, union station & the embarcadero.
You should key off Market Street and try to move up & down that way, the Bart
rail runs underground there, if you jump on there you can be in Walnut Creek
pretty quickly! Or ride up the hill & visit the Haight. Whatever you do, take
the time to learn how the very efficient public transport operates, driving a
car around will just be a headache! Oh! They have bikeshare bikes there so you
might enjoy that!
Unfortunately, for a first timer a day is hardly enough (2 or 3 Maybe) once
you've been a few times a long day there can be fun though. So, think of this
as the first visit of many! Too much stuff to talk about in a short post!

[RBW] OT - Help me decide how to spend a day in Sacramento /San Francisco

2016-05-30 Thread SeanMac
Hi folks,

I'm hoping for some advice for a trip that I will be taking in late July.
I will be spending a bit more than a week in Sacramento participating in a
seminar for teachers on the Transcontinental Railroad. The seminar ends on
a Friday evening, but I decided to extend my visit a bit so that I have a
day to play / explore before getting on a train to head home (to Buffalo,
NY) on Sunday morning.

I'm a Midwestern boy - never having ventured west beyond St. Louis,
Missouri. It is possible that this will be the only time that I will ever
be in California, so I am looking for advice about what I should do on a
Saturday in late July.

One option, of course, is to visit Riv headquarters in Walnut Creek. I
certainly am considering doing just that. I'd love comments regarding how
high this should be on my list of things to do (yes, I know that this list
is pretty biased). I've also thought about attending a Giants baseball
game, or simply walking around Fisherman's Wharf / Ghiradelli Square in
downtown San Francisco. A few friends have also suggested a visit to
Alcatraz.

The only real constraint that I have is that I will need to rely on public
transportation to get from Sacramento to wherever I decide to go. I also
would love to be back in Sacramento before it gets too late on Saturday so
that I can make my train home on Sunday morning.

Thanks for your suggestions. Please respond off list to :
