Oddly, that shot of me going up Mt Graham is the second of my Rivendell shots to get picked up by Explorer on Flickr. The shot below - - a very average shot of my Legolas - - somehow got selected. I's pretty mundane, but managed to develop 13k hits and a lot of compliments. It really ain't much of a shot, but did give a lot of exposure to Compass 38mm tires and pretty Rivendell bikes... https://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/14159529478/ it was a quick snap with a camera phone for the boys at the LBS. That is a beautiful bike. It's nice how the tires, saddle and tape blend so well to compliment the red frame. [RBW] Re: Atlantis commute... first time in about two years!
Rene, Although it is important to find a comfortable position on the bike it is equally important off the bike, And it sounds like you may be spending more time lately in the office and/or on a computer than on a bike. So if that is the case, you may want to try moving your computer mouse to your left hand (assuming you have a mouse and it's currently on the right) and sit in a chair without armrests. It's amazing how much pressure we can inadvertently put on our elbows and shoulders over a period of time without even realizing it. It might also be helpful to get a tennis ball or grip specific strengthening device and use it daily. Our bodies are not much different than our bicycles in that a small tweak can here and there can make a huge difference in the overall performance. Always be aware of your posture! Personally, I've found that I have less pressure on my hands in a forward lean than I do in a more upright riding position. In an upright position I find that I tend to make the same mistake I do in chairs with armrests, except instead of weighting the elbows and shoulders, I weight my wrists and shoulders. I currently use the Surly Open Bar handlebar. It's is similar to the Albatross except it has a 45 degree sweep instead of a 90 degree sweep. I chose the 45 degree sweep for reasons other than hand comfort but find myself in a lean with my hands in the forward handlebar bends most of the time; primarily to reduce pressure on my wrists. Please don't take this the wrong way because I'm only trying to be helpful. But instead of focusing on the bike ... focus on the engine. Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis commute... first time in about two years!
FWIW, I'm happy to report that the photo of the Atlantis on the morning commute made it to the Explorer Gallery in Flickr, and is going around the world as I write. My wife was mad this morning because my phone was beeping all night long (I was sleeping so deeply that I didn't even hear it) and at 5:30 AM woke me up ordering me to silence it (don't ask why she couldn't just switch it to silent herself). I did, and it hit me that these were all Flickr notifications, so when I woke up and went to check it, I realized that it was all due to the photo making the Explorer Gallery (I had no idea what that was, so had to do a bit of research to find out). With that increased exposure, it's been going around the world since 2:00 AM PDT or so, which is what woke up my wife. My phone hasn't stopped vibrating all morning. I realize that the Explorer Gallery has nothing to do with the quality of the photo, but rather with some secret algorithm that assess how social you are on Flickr, so I want to thank you guys who viewed it and started making it your favorite for allowing it to hit the magic jackpot. I don't chase faves, nor am I particularly active on Flickr, but after it made the Explorer Gallery, the fact that so many people I have no relationship with keep making it their favorite is good news. Maybe some of them will follow the Atlantis and Rivendell tags as well, and discover a whole new world of cycling! Thanks again! René, Congrats on rejoining the bike/train commuters of the bay area. Good to see your Atlantis (and you) reborn. If you are still encountering problems with pressure on your hands and are seeking to get even more upright, I have a 55cm Bosco Bar and thumbies you could try (although your new bars look great). I'm not sure what the problem is, but I used the Bosco when I had some shoulder problems and it kept me on the bike and the ACE every morning I had to go to campus. They really shift your weight back off your hands and shoulders. Contact me offline if you'd like to use them. They're just taking up space in the garage unless my shoulder flares up again. This would also keep me from using them in a bad Picasso imitation! http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748703551304576261042931202326 Happy commuting. Thanks John, I have several bars that I can continue to try, including the Bosco Bullmoose and the regular Bosco in several widths, as well as the smaller/narrower Nitto Promenade bars. I figure I'll try to keep riding and see how it goes, and what sort of minor adjustments (or major) seem to work better. Yes. The Boscos took care of my neck pain. Not entirely of the hands, although they certainly made quite an improvement over the drop bars. I remember having lots of hand pain with the Moustache bars, but that was when I was just beginning, so probably lots of positioning issues. Would be somewhat curious as to how the Albastache would feel, but I think their still mostly forward leaning bars, so probably more hand pressure with those.
