Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for winter weather head gear?

2017-10-29 Thread Michael Morrissey
Giro ski helmet is the best for winter commuting. It looks cool, is
comfortable, and is a lot better than trying to wear a beanie or some sort of
hat underneath a regular vented bicycle helmet designed to cool your head.

The newer Giro helmets have easy opening vents. I typically ride for 10 mins
with them closed, warm up, then open them up.

Like Tim, Merino works for me. I wear wool caps down to about 30F, and ski caps
below that. Thicker wool socks in roomier shoes or sandals, and layered wool
clothes. The early RBW wool caps are prone to running dye when you sweat, and
the later ones have thick seams that hurt under a helmet. Walz, Hernandez,
Pace, Randi Jo and others make nice, useable ones. Layers by Kucharik, Swobo,
Ibex, Icebreaker, Wooly Warm are all good. I wear wool jerseys and tights over
it all. I buy used stuff a lot to keep costs down.

No matter what the temperature is, and no matter what I'm wearing, I sweat.
I've found that wool is the only thing that can keep me warm while damp or wet,
so I have a few different weight stocking caps (the kidz these days call them
"beanies", but they don't have propellors) made by Ibex. They're great.

I guess not rivy but I picked up an earlier incarnation of this and it is
GREAT! I usually also wear some sort of wool neck warmer.

I wear an Ibex balaclava:
https://www.ibex.com/the-balaclava?quantity=1=8990=One+Size
If you shop around or shop their sales you can buy it for about $25
I've worn mine for 3-4 years of winter commuting. Keeps me warm down into the
single degree Fahrenheit temperature readings. It fits nicely under my helmet
and folds up small, so I always have it as temperatures fluctuate greatly
during a Washington DC winter.
