Re: [RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread Horace
I knew this topic would eventually show up on the list. :-)

The odd arms race in multi-blade cartridge razors mirrors the constant
increase in bicycle cassette sizes from 5-speed to 6- to 7- to 8- to 9- to
10- to 11-

In 2004 The Onion ran an article making fun of this, predicting that
eventually there would be five-blade cartridges.
http://www.theonion.com/articles/fuck-everything-were-doing-five-blades,11056/
(salty language warning)

Campy and Shimano are up to, what, 11 speeds now? Is that not ridiculous?

I use a Merkur classic safety razor and it is like a fine single-speed bike.

Re: [RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Old school safety razors: I am old enough to have started shaving with these
(Gillette brand! -- Our brand new, at the time, Grt Bks college, Thomas
Aquinas college, began life on the campus that started as the Gillette
mansion and grounds -- the mansion had an Adams family basement organ that
vented into the living room) and, believe me, as with modern clinchers,
forgings and frame alloys, the old days have nothing on the new; even cheap
double blade disposables are far, far better. The 2-sideds were probably
better than cutthroats, but prolly not by much. As a lad, I had a bad
complexion, and ... you get the idea: many mornings stumbling into 830 am
Euclid or whatzizname's conic sections with bits of toilet paper stuck to my
face.

I'm bearded at the moment, but even when i'm shaving regularly a cake
of Bert's Bees soap seems to last for a couple of years and so costs
virtually nothing. I use standard modern cartridge razors, but
recently learned that you can get extra life out of them by stropping
them on a pair of jeans. I haven't tried the old skool safety razors,
but maybe next time i lose the beard i'll try one out - hardly seems
worth it for a weekly neck shave.

RE: [RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread Steve Vesel

Funny you should bring this up Scott.

For the first time in my life I am growing a beard. I'm into week 3, and the
reason behind it is the bathroom exhaust fan wakes my 3 month old daughter -
makes for an unhappy household at 5 am.

I (used to) use a brush, cheap shaving soap that comes in a stick from the
supermarket, and razor with a metal handle and diposable head.

I think I'll be back to shaving sometime soon though, as my wife recently asked
me: "How long are you going to keep up this beard nonsense..."

Perhaps Santa will put a Merkur in my stocking.

Cheers

Stevy

Re: [RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I shave often and, almost, regularly, because I dislike the "dirty" feeling
of an unshaved face. Hot water, soap (I don't use shaving cream or gel, just
lotsa hotwater and good soap (Dove) and a decently new razor. Oh, and of
course, I am half Filipino, which means that, while I am hairy for a "little
brown brother," I am only lightly hirsute for an Anglo.

I must try the Roman alternative to soap: oil and a stigil ...

In a moral exchange for shaving 'most every day, I don't cut my hair. (Well,
except 2X a year.)

[RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread S.Cutshall
Odd? Unrelated? I think not [Rivendell sells Porto-Shaving-Cream,
so... ].

I am not one to shave often. When I do it's for two distinct reasons:

1. I look up, while brushing teeth, and jump with fright at what I
see looking back at me in the mirror.

Or...

2. My wife and/or daughter tell me to [because I repulse them].

Fair enough.

For years, and because I have a 'Stache, I've simply used an 'lectric
trimmer [no, not an actual electric shaver--more of an electric beard
trimmer] and it leaves a fair amount of stubble... so I am not really
ever -that- shaved right after I shave.

So, I grew [pun] tired of the stubbled look and began a search for a
non-electric shaver that doesn't look an Apple product or like a Casio
"Baby-G" wristwatch, or is not disposable... and it took a minute
too. And then I found a site called "Classic Shaving"... wow, the
choices were about as endless as looking for a new tire pump on a walk
through Interbike.

In the end, I selected a nice German shaver, a Merkur [just like my
dad used when I was a youngster], some blades, a nice brush, mug and
some cream. Cost around $160.00 for the whole setup, but I figure
it'll save money over time, space in land fills and I can have a
better shave [when I remember to do it].

Anyway else here shave 'Old Skool'?

Was tempted to enter my toes into the world of Straight Razors but the
prices for those [plus all the additional accessories] -and the
thoughts of all the failures while in the Learning Curve stage Re:
loss of facial skin- put the kibosh on that.

PS--> Guess this could be a Lady-Topic too [but I doubt many women
would own up to having facial hair that needs shaving].
