Tommy Godwin, who up until very recently held the record for the most miles ridden in a year (75,065 in 1939) did all of that on a three-speed Raleigh. You don’t need lots of gears to do great things on a bike. --Eric N www.CampyOnly.com CampyOnlyGuy.blogspot.com Twitter: @CampyOnlyGuy > On

Didn't Haldeman's bike (featured in a long ago Reader) have a 3 speed freewheel with no derailleurs? FWIW, when Tim came through ABQ, we did a ride on the nice Rio Grande bike path; 30 miles for me, but he added 10 or 15 more by riding to our trailhead meeting place from his hotel and back again.

How far is a matter of perspective. As a lad now aware of a bicycle, riding around the block was unfathomable. I thought the driveway was a big deal, and from that perspective, it was. As was riding around the block, then the neighborhood, then to school, then across town ! One perspective

As far as non-custom Rivendells, I rode it on my Hilsen, and rode with another rider on a Hilsen in France. And I know there are many, many more. I just woke up but remember talking to a guy in NJ who rode it on his Atlantis. Of course Lon Haldeman has ridden it on his custom Riv, which is a

If they can do it, it's not way too far for them. For me, 200 km is about as far as I'm going to go. However, the structure - the Rules - what some might call "the bureaucracy" add something special that goes well beyond your ordinary garden variety century ride, even if the distance is less

What Grant told Patrick is right. 30 miles is a long ride. I'm a randonneur and I did PBP in 2015. It is a very, very difficult ride. The hills are absolutely endless. I had a DNF at just over 1000km due to a sidewall cut on my Compass extra light tires that couldn't be fixed. I used 2 boots
