I think a "26th Anniversary" Rivendell is quirky enough. I like it.
It makes me laugh, like "Ever Since 1994" did in 1995.

Re: [RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

2019-02-09 Thread Leah Peterson
Oh Tom, I thought no one would ever ask! Actually, caveat: This is all in fun.
I don’t want to be telling Grant/Rivendell what to do. Whatever they do will be
good, clean, fun and I am so excited to finally know what it will be. I love my
bike, I love their bikes, and I am a novice who knows NOTHING. But if I was
going to make a Mixte Wish List, here are my respectful and non-bossy thoughts:

1. Fancy Rivendell lugs. I love them - like the ones they put on customs. They
are traditional Rivendell and fitting for an anniversary model. The lugs are
the nod to Rivendell’s beginnings and the evolved geometry is where Rivendell
is now - a summary of 25 years. The the decal can read “One Bike To Rule Them
All.” Or “My Precious” if the former is too lengthy. Or some clever Tolkien
reference...

2. A lower top tube. The TT is not actually that low on the Betz, and I’d
prefer it lower for my golden years. If it was swoopy like the Clementine,
that’s good, too.

3. Take wider tires. Like the Clementine.

4. I want the brake cables strung on the underside of the tubes. I have a nasty
mark where the cable has been mashed into my paint job by the arm of my vehicle
bike rack. It’s an eyesore I see every darn day.

5. The thing I really, really, really want: Sparkly red paint with cream
accents and the Rivendell head badge. You know the kind of red that stops you
in your tracks, turns heads, convinces you you’re 16 and makes people let out a
long, low whistle? THAT red.

I reserve the right to add on later! Does anyone else have these on their wish
lists?

So fun and thanks for asking, Tom! If your wife won’t give you your Valentine’s
bike, maybe you should get an anniversary bike instead. Ha!

Bill, unfortunately not with the Paul Medium Racers and Bon Jon’s. There’s only
2.5-3mm between front tire top and brake arm bottom as measured on my Roadini.
Side clearance is limited by the inside fork before the brake arm would become
an issue.

Sure excited to see tire clearance on whatever Grant’s special anniversary
Mixte might have. I would 100% buy one for sure if one of the 4 sizes does not
fit me. I will get one for my wife, future daughter in law, or a future wife

Actually that last part was made up. The third candidate would be upgrading my

I was hoping to run Bon Jons with fenders and the Diacompe centerpull

I have a 61 Roadini running 35s (Jon Bon Pass) without fenders, using Paul
medium racers. That’s the biggest I would attempt, though I think someone on
this list managed to squeeze 38s with some contortions and magic.

Max tire per Riv is 35.

Re: [RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

2019-02-05 Thread John G.
Man, I am worn out by the “bike xyz is overbuilt” conversation. It feels like
people have completely lost sight of other things that make a bike delightful
to ride. My Atlantis was around 29 pounds and a bit heavy on climbs, but its
handling and manners couldn’t be beat. Sure, I was about 1 mph slower on it
than my other bikes, but holy moly that matters way less than feeling good on a
long ride.

I miss that bike. Wish I had never sold it. Was foolishly chasing down the
“rides light” phantom.

The Specialized 40th Anniversary Allez frameset was nice, but very pricey
at $4000 for the frameset. It was designed by Mark DiNucci, but made by
Toyo, so good stuff. Only 74 were made.

Interesting, if you really want one, DiNucci still has the lugs, including
the cool x-wing chainstay bridge, so for a little more, you can have a
custom frameset build by Mark with these lugs.

I wonder if Mark Nobilette will make Riv's 25th Anniversary frameset?!

Good Luck!

2019-02-04 Thread Collin A
I agree with Joe on this, Grant has his idea and likely won't be swayed by
the thoughts of the group, that seems to be why he doesn't do disc brakes,
carbon forks, etc... If anything, an anniversary bike gives Rivendell an
almost sure way to try something different/crazy that will sell out based
on it's limited availability.

Echoing Marty, A collectible Riv seems to be an antithesis of how Grant &
Co. design bikes and how they intend for them to be ridden. Buying a
Rivendell and not riding it seems like a sin!

It'll be interesting to see what the crew comes up with. It'll be met with
a combination of praise and scoffs I'm sure, ha!

Re: [RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

I agree with Joe that it should be a "limited model." If Riv wants to make
a 25th Anniversary edition, it should be something like the Legolas since
that seems to be one of the rarest models ever made. Good Luck!

2019-02-04 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I remember when Specialized did the retro-versary reissues of the
Stumpjumper and the Allez. Or the Paramount 50th. Or De Rosa, Merckx,
Harley Davidson (the bicycle, not the motorbike) the list goes on. Retro
can be fun, but keep in mind not everything designed to be a collectible
ends up a collectible, and few of those retro-versary models will ever be
ridden. That's a shame. Personally, I like the idea that RBW would do a new
bike that represents everything they've learned so far - just like they
always have. I love my 6-year Anniversary All Rounder! One thing is for
certain: I will design a special anniversary head-badge poster at some
point during the year. I think all I need is the Gus-badge and whatever the
25th edition will be to be up to date. Unless of course they come out with
other new models between now and the end of the year, which is not out of
the question given their history. I suspect Grant only shares with us
what's a little way up his sleeve. Can't wait to see what's further up.

I like the idea that Grant presents for the 25th Anniversary looking forward
and celebrating the past model. I enjoy the way Riv honors the past without
just playing the hits. I don’t always enjoy every new model but at least it’s
changing and iterating. There’s a clear evolution of design going on so I am
hard pressed to see him offering a vault design anytime soon. I am sure they’ll
build you an all Rounder if you want to pay the price for a custom though.

Yes - the HubbuhubbuH. The downtube, midtube, toptube, and the tube
connecting the bottom brackets are all laterally ovalized. The downtube,
midtube and toptube all transition from round at the headtube to laterally
ovalized maybe 6 to twelve inches from the headtube. I would imagine that
all of the tubes would be smaller in "diameter" on a mixte.

Here's an old Mountain Goat

with laterally ovalized top and down tubes.

I guess if you ovalized the seat tube at the bottom bracket a la Ritcheys
you'd have somewhere to make that mixte-y top tube join somewhat
coherently?

I can't imagine how head scratching this would be with lugged construction.

the sizes and qty made that people pont up for.  The orig Reynolds 753 special

recreate the Sachs design lugs and have them made in Taiwan.

the Gus, Clem L and Cheviot. I don’t see a lot of gaps in the current models
and I do think Grant sees the new designs as an evolution of the past models so
re-releasing the all rounder or another old bike would be an odd choice. Blue
Lug had the special edition Frank Jones that was great looking.

[RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

2019-02-03 Thread Brian Reeves

I’m interested in the Mixte idea as well. Sorry in advance for the thread
drift but since we are sort-of talking about this here’s some 25th anniversary
ideas just because it’s fun to think about these things: (Disclaimer - I
am not remotely anywhere close to being a novice on bike design and can’t
begin to imagine all the time it takes to dream, design, prototype, order
and sell bikes…and I haven’t ridden a Rivendell other than the Atlantis. I
trust Grant and the Rivendell team will design a great bike whatever it
turns out to be.)

   1. Make special 25th anniversary decals for all new bikes and put these
on all frames produced in the coming year - maybe a special seat tube
decal with signatures from everyone on it at Rivendell.
   2. Draft 2 (or more) new or refreshed bike designs. Offer the frames up
like the Hubbuhubbuh tandem requiring non-refundable deposits to pre-commit
to purchase at a discount (if X amount of total deposits aren’t made the
frame isn’t produced and require X amount of deposits to be put down per
frame size for that frame size to be made unless Rivendell wants to keep
stock of the bikes). Here are some bike ideas:
  1. Rivendells/Grants Special Mixte Design - If not making the
special mixte with ovalized tubes maybe something along the lines of this
  prototype without the top tube:
  https://www.flickr.com/photos/olipop/12289515975/in/photostream/ .
Only reason I suggest this is because I like curve-a-tubes like on the
  large Atlantis frames.

   1. Roadeo or Legolas like bike with longer chainstays that is in the
road bike category (or slot in somewhere in between the road/country bike
category but leaning toward the road category – say in between a Roadeo
and
Hilsen) that takes wider tires (650b in most sizes and Atlantis tire
clearances) and canti/v-brakes. In a sense a stripped down Atlantis but
fully lugged or fillet brazed/tig with a semi-modernized? tt slope of 3
or
less or 6 if fully modernized?...
  2. Revised Hunqapillar – I really like the look of this prototype
(some of the best photography I've ever seen as well to boot) and love
the
  color too:
  https://www.flickr.com/photos/olipop/12289515975/in/photostream/ .
Actually, whatever color this is I'd think would be great on any future
  Rivendell.

   1. Make special 25th anniversary model mugs, patches, hats and shirts (a
shirt with all the head-badges on them would be cool – it might be too
expensive to create and too expensive of a shirt as well though).

On a side note - My long term plan is to eventually add a Rivendell mixte
(for me to use around town and for friends to use) and drop-bar roadish
bike (really want something like a Roadeo but with bigger tire clearances
and canti/v brakes …the road bike I ride now and have for the last 10 years
is too small and I’m not getting any younger…) to go with my swept back
Atlantis (which use has skewed more toward dirt/trails/road…actually pretty
mixed riding and handles whatever I want to do). I don’t have a specific
timeline on this however. So I have a new question for ya’ll: What are you
biking needs (or desires/wants) that you’d like to fill in the future?

I'd vote for a Legolas-type bike. Light tubing, canti/v-brakes,
"modernized" with a sloping top tube and ability to take slightly larger
tires like 38/42. Grant mentioned in his recent blog that the Roadini did
not sell well, except the 50 and 54 sizes sold out. I think there are a lot
of shorter/lighter people who do not want a stout bike and great big tires
but like the Rivendell philosophy. The larger sizes could be made stouter.

I agree. A Thunder Burt Legolas in pumpkin orange would throw back to the burnt
orange Riv cross bike I used to stare at on the internet, and be on-trend, at
least with my friends’ bikes.

Just re-badging the Frank Jones singlesepeed as an Anniverswry model (and
offering a larger size) would also work for me.

Speaking of the All Rounder...RR03 ,
pg 34 has a nice write-up from the past.

Reading this RR21 article
, it almost
sounds like the MIJ Atlantis was to the MUSA All Rounder what the MIT Sam
was to the MUSA Homer -- a more evolved (from Grant's perspective) but less
expensive frame.

Question for those that have owned both an All Rounder and an Atlantis:
Could you tell a difference, functionally?

Re: [RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

2019-02-03 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Pure fantasy but my ideal'Riv 25th Anniversary' design would be... Open up the
full historical design catalog so long as lugs still exist to support, pre
order with full deposit only. Any design that gets 5 or more orders (whatever
threshold is driven by River and their builder to ensure a profit) makes the
cut.

Have Grant and the team develop a special head badge and Rivendell decal set,
number then, Grant hand sign them... And somehow have a secondary decal that
notes the particular model heritage. Maybe make the colors limited and a
special pallet... Maybe a single color!?!

No geometry changes, only the stock sides available originally. No protovelos,
no customs, but any stock design advertised in a catalog or reader. Maybe
include Bridgestone 1994 catalog? :)

Everyone would theoretically be able to get what they wanted (so long as they
bring 4 friends along to their way of thinking). And if Riv kept the deposit
list live and public we'd have the ultimate all time popularity contest for Riv
bike designs.

New, new stock, special edition Riv All Rounder, 1 of 5, and it says Rivendell
on it, that fits... :)

I suspect something like a Legolas that takes 50mm 650 tires would attract a
fair amount of attention.

A bit pared down in stoutness from the current allrounders.
A refresh of the original allrounder/XO-1

I’m pretty sure I’d buy one.

2019-02-02 Thread Patrick Moore
All Rivendells are collectors' models!

For a 25th anniversary model, I'd vote for a Rivendell track bike (with
that signature Rivendell handling). If I weren't being facetious, I'd have
to say that the Atlantis is probably a very good candidate for a special
production model, no, as being the oldest-running model.

Or bring back the Legolas under a non-trademarked name.
