Oooh, I may get these! Polly had two pairs of cycling gloves in her saddlebag
that I now own. I LOVE them. So I bet I’d really like these! Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Cotton tape on top of Meisha's cork grips--good idea or not?

2019-06-03 Thread REC (Roberta)
I'd slather on the sunscreen, just to have it wear off way too soon. So, I
picked these at the store up in a Large because I don't like tight fitting
garments:
https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/us/en_US/bike-clothing/cycling-arm-leg-warmers/bontrager-uv-sunstop-cycling-arm-cover/p/22817/

They are loose enough (just the size of my arms) to not be constricting and
I do not feel hot in them (although, it's rarely been in the 80's here
yet). Notice that on the closeup pic, the inside lower arm is mesh for
ventilation. They are quite long, with the tops coming to near my armpits
and the bottom well covering the bone at my wrist. At the top, the
Bontrager name on the black band has a self stick rubber like substance so
it does not slip down. I also like it that they are cut for bent arm
position. One person I met told me to wet them during a ride to keep
cooler, but I haven't tried that yet. They are washable, but I haven't
needed to wash them yet.

I'm quite happy with this purchase and wish I did it long ago. For my neck
and décolletage, I wear two Riv bandanas, one tied in front with the
triangle in the back to protect my neck, the other tied in the back to
protect the front. I might be next buying a crew neck shirt, so that I
won't need the bandana for the front, just for the neck. Or, a
collard shirt, like Deacon Patrick uses, but will still need one Riv
bandana for décolletage protection.

Right now, I'm using sunscreen for just my hands (until I buy the gloves),
face and knees, but if you have a suggestion for a non scented, chem-free
one, I'll try it. I'm using Alba Botanica Sport Sunscreen SPF 45 fragrance
free. It's not quite fragrance free, but it is fairly so and the scent is
very neutral and wears off in a minute or so.

I used to wear Defeet Armskins in the summer and while they are not
officially UV rated (as they are intended for cool/old weather) they worked
great. They are rather thick tubular knit that cools your arms as you
perspire underneath them. I had tried some UV arm sleeves from Amazon but
none of them were form fitting as they were not a tubular knit, which
literally wraps around your arms so no gripper stuff that wears off is
necessary. They were basically non form fitting fabric sewn together with a
silly seam and reminded me more of a shirt sleeve they cut off and stuck
some gripper stuff on the end and called declared "Look, a UV arm sleeve
!". Ahahahaha !

I did a search on amazon for compression uv arm sleeves and these are one
example that fit the bill for being tubular and seamless.

Are gloves not an option, or are you still getting slip with gloves on? Riv

I ran into the same problems when I had the cork grips when I shellaced

2019-05-30 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
I don't have any experience with cotton tape over (real) cork grips, but
have you considered wrapping some twine over the cork grips and
then shellacking it? My Jones SG bars have cushiony (fake) cork bar tape,
wrapped over with cotton bar tape, "entangled" with twine, and then
shellacked. The twine form grippy ridges and they're good enough for
lightweight mountain biking as well as look good. I copied the style from
Rivendell, as per this Blahg post
.
Be careful not to put too many layers of shellac as that will smoothen out
the grips.

2019-05-30 Thread Garth

I doubt the painters tape beneath bar tape on top of cork would provide a
silp free experience Roberta. For summer riding with sweaty hands I wear
these "fishing gloves" from Glacier Bay. They just so happen to make
terrific cycling gloves ! By far most preferred over any "cycling glove"
which offer slim pickin's for unpadded, leather that dries soft, and big
enough for XL hands. The unpadded palm is fully synthetic leather that is
thin and grippy, dry or wet and dries soft and quickly. They always feel
temperature neutral even in high heat/humidity and block UV. I've worn a
pair since past summer and this summer so far and they look good as new. I
bought the blue camo ones because they are kinda funky looking but they
also have some plain gray ones.
