Some short drop/reach handlebars I'm assuming you'd want a 38 or 40
width. The Dajia at least suggests a removable face plate stem because it
may be difficult to maneuver the bends.

For brake lever, I gotta say classic non aero ones like Campy NR/SR to me
were good for small hands as I always found them too small ! Tektro makes
a aero smaller lever RL341, but the body appears out of place as it regular
length, so kinda goofy. A aero Shimano BL-R400 may work for you as the body
is kinda small compared with many today with a regular size lever.

I have SUNXCD rear derailleur, shifts to 34t. Silver and nice and
lightweight. A bit pricey, I think microshift also makes a good rear
derialleur as well.

One of the best purchases I've made is the Rene Herse crank sold by
Compass. Expensive, but durable and light!

Yes I am selling a 1976 Motobecane Grand Jubilé with the long cage and everyone
wants me to part it out.

Not to hijack the thread though, so as to the topic I second the vote for
Suntour derailleurs. I run the Cyclone on my bike with Simplex Retrofriction
shifter in a 1x6 setup.

I have VGT Luxe long cage RD, FD, and downtube shifters I'd let go for a
reasonable price.

[RBW] Re: Crowd sourcing ideas for vintage parts for a new randonneuring rig (semi sort of WTB)

2017-07-20 Thread GAJett
Yeah, the CX has two problems I should have anticipated.
1. My chain is an NOS Siedisport designed for 5/6-speed clusters, so is
extremely sensitive to adjustments.
2. The depth of the inner cage plate, although much less than a MTB front, is
too deep for the three-inch difference on my half-step.
In the description for the CX70 on the Riv website it states it's been made to
work with some wierd half-step setups. I guess mine is just wierder.
Before I had Riv build my AHH with a similar half-step, they used an old
low-end Shimmy they had lying around. Besides not working well for my "wierd"
application, it was incredibly fugly! Pulled the Superb II off the old bike
and works perfectly on the AHH. So the original Jubilee's going back on the
old.
Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Re: Crowd sourcing ideas for vintage parts for a new randonneuring rig (semi sort of WTB)

2017-07-20 Thread Jim Bronson
The Grand Bois spec is interesting. As with them, I use the Microshift
rear derailers and Microshift bar-ends, they work good and the bar ends are
half the cost of Shimano units. The RD-47S is the short cage, the long
cage is RD-47 with no S on the end. It's available in shiny silver and is
very pretty!

http://www.microshift.com.tw/RD-R47S_r10.html

It says it will only do 28T but I'm using it with 30 now, no issues.

If you sweat a lot like me the Microsoft bar ends are actually better than
the Shimano equivalents, I find the Shimano units gum up more easily.

As for the main point of this thread, not at all into vintage parts for my
rando bike. Not on the bleeding edge either. I find that mainstream parts
9/10 speed are "better" by my standards for defining better: cheap, easily
available, functional and reliable. You can buy a 9 speed chain at many
Walmarts. Great if you are having chain problems on a long brevet. That
said I'm not a big supporter of Walmart but if you need a chain and there
is one nearby with the chain you need in stock, it really helps.

In defense of the Ultegra CX70 FD, the cage is designed for a max ring size
of 48T, and it works great on a wide compact double with narrow (9s) chain.

2017-07-19 Thread franklyn
Lesli,

I still build basically with 8-, or 9-speed parts and friction shifters,
although new Shimano road RD (105, Ultegra) can shift up to 32T now. I have
several spare 9-speed LX/XT RD (standard or reverse pull) and a Suntour XC
Pro FD if you need them.

You can still find 9-speed Ultegra or D/A hubs on eBay, though I haven't
looked for a front hub for a while as all my bikes have dynamo wheels now.

With a bit of lurking, it's possible to find old White 'tincan' hubs for
about the same price as midrange modern Shimano; cheaper if they're sold as
"for parts" (I picked up a couple of tincans for ~$25/ea and was able to
rebuild them with another ~$15 in parts.)

If you're looking for old downtube shifters, ping me -- I've a pair from a
mid-80s Trek that I'll never use and I'd be happy to pass on to you for
free.

For a long cage RD, I suggest a Deore M591, 9 spd with ample chain wrap and
less than $40. RD are very inexpensive compared to 20, 30 years ago, so
why use old mechs when you can get technically superior RDs now that a
inexpensive.

I agree with the beauty of high flange hubs, but VO is the only thing close
to the Phil or the Shimano 333's that came on my 75 Voyaguer II.

Campy levers are nice, but aero levers get rid of the annoying brake cables
starring you I the face. I suggest function over form, especially the
Tektro's RL341's (aero with the QR button, good for canti's to open them
up) which have a SHORT REACH/Womens option for small hands.

I have a pair of Suntour ratcheting bar end shifters, if you are
interested. Of course the RBW Silvers are a stylish with finer ratcheting
movement which has advantages if you are friction shifting the rear
