OK, I understand what you're saying. BTW, I'm index shifting
(heresy!) and I seem to have it dialed in and shifting fine. I will
consider spacers. Thanks for the info. Steve

The only thing to be aware of is that the face of the hub will force an
alignment of the dropouts.  The issue is mainly the change of stresses on
the connection of the rear dropouts to the stays at the brazing.

There's plenty of elasticity in the steel so that the stays will clamp down
and/or spread back out (and if you've ever seen a steel frame being
respaced, it's pretty amazing how far you have to bend it to change things.)

If you _had_ to do it for a single trip or instance, I wouldn't worry about
it particularly (with a steel frame of course).  But, if you were going to
on a regularly basis, it's probably not a bad idea to put a couple spacers
in there.  It's bone simple stuff.  I wouldn't even worry about changing the
 axle.

As far as the chainline - it's a 2 mm shift at most.  I didn't worry about
that at all. Just checked the limit screws and enjoyed the benefits of
 analog shifting.

Hello,

I'm new to the group. I have a 2009 AHH and it has 135 spacing. I
believe the Saluki which the AHH replaced had 132.5 spacing.

[RBW] Re: Lighter Wheel Set Question

2011-05-04 Thread MichaelH
The AHH was advertised as 135 when I considered buying one. I was
surprised that GP moved away from the more versatile 132.5 of the
Rambouillet, which was put to sleep when the AHH was released.
Perhaps he thought the 135 fit the bikes image better. I didn't have
any other bikes that took 135 and didn't want a non- compatible wheel
set to deal with, along with the brakes, that was a deal breaker for
me.

I would recommend to the OP having the stays reset to 132.5 and using
either set of wheels at will.

 Hi Bruce,

The AHHs are supposed to have 132.5 spacing. Unless you've altered that, you
should be able to use 130 OLD wheels just fine. I did that on mine.

 My aught-eight model has 135, dead-on.

[RBW] Re: Lighter Wheel Set Question

2011-05-04 Thread Bill M.
I used a pair of 130 mm Shimano 105 hubs in a 135 spaced frame by
adding 2 mm of spacers to each side of the axle. No re-dishing was
needed, it worked fine. There's a bit less axle in the dropout but
that makes no difference, as Sheldon pointed out the wheel is held by
the locknut and skewer faces. It's also easily reversible.

I wouldn't bother respacing the frame. My Riv Road was spaced 128 (to
accept 126 or 130 hubs), and I think it's kind of a pain.

I have a pair of Mavic open pro wheels from another bike with road

hub spacing is a bit narrower, my question is... will it hurt the
frame to squeeze the rear dropout to fit the smaller hub? I don't want
 to stress the frame.

 Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Lighter Wheel Set Question

2011-05-03 Thread charlie
I did this on a 135mm frame I have making the 130mm rear hub I used a
133mm. This is exactly what the Surly Crosscheck was advertised to be
able to do with its 132.5 mm spacing.fit either size axle. Chrome
moly steel bends quite a bit before it stays bent ( no pun intended )
so I would add spacers and as long as enough axle is in the dropout
you should be fine. It might be better to get a longer axle and add
the spacers rather than trying to make a short axle work although I
did it with my frame.

It would probably be easier to just add a couple 2.5 mm spacers (or even 2's
or 1.5's) to the axle.  That's what I did to use a stock DuraAce hub which
I'd been using on a 130 mm spaced frame.

I'm not sure I've ever heard a definitive word on whether the bending would
be bad, but it's easy enough to fix.
