[RBW] Re: Meet a new Rivendellian today!

2008-12-28 Thread EricP

Okay, now you folks are making me really jealous. Am not going to be
out to the San Diego area until August, though. Even then, the bike I
have won't be true Rivendellian. Merely a Brompton.

I know the real reason Jim wants to get out there and ride - this
winter is miserable in the Twin Cities. Roads are ice and snow
covered. If you don't slide on ice, you slide on oatmeal a slushy
snow pack that makes controlling a bicycle near impossible. And we
have three months more to enjoy.

way to get around on my own. On one trip, a relative loaned me a bike
of the non-Rivish persuasion and we rode along the beach highway about
40 miles, somewhat faster than my comfortable pace (this guy does
Ironman triathlons for fun, and I was sporting my winter pelt). That
was great, but that relative hasn't been around to entertain me on my
subsequent visits. Plus I really wanted to get up in the hills and
explore a little rather than time-trial on the highway. The next time
I found some trails to hike, but would have of course preferred to
ride them on my bike... But now I have a SS coupled Atlantis, and
will travel. I still hate to leave Minnesota, but since I'll have my
bike this time, I have a ray of hope, and less incentive to concoct
 excuses.

Anyway, if this ride happens, and it happens to happen as late as mid-
March, I would like to join the group. Heck, if I don't make this
ride, maybe I could get together with some of you local to that area
for another ride. Funny, in writing this, I suddenly really want to
make this trip and ride with you folks.

Well, January 10 will be the third PCH Randos 200K ride, and definitely
the flattest. Don't believe what the PCHR website says about 3000-3500
feet of climbing. I rode a nearly identical route in September (the
Montecito Malibu Meander 203K RUSA permanent) and it clocked 1900 feet
of climbing. (I guess I should pass that info on to the PCHR webmaster!)

See you down the road,

encounter Riv folk like the one shown at the event's link to the
 type of rider http://www.pchrandos.com/images/P1120718.JPG you

[RBW] Re: Meet a new Rivendellian today!

2008-12-27 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery

It's a way off, but, as I just learned, my wife is probably going to
drag me to the Vista/Oceanside area in mid-March. Despite the fine
scenery and weather, previous trips there have been miserable for me,
since I'm not into golf or power shopping, and I don't really have a
way to get around on my own.

You might also want to check out

like the one shown at the event's link to the type of rider

 SoCal Rivendellians -

You might also want to check out
 http://www.pchrandos.com/html/brevets.html for a 200Km *FLAT* coastal
ride on Jan. 10 starting in Ventura, where you'll encounter Riv folk like
the one shown at the event's link to the type of rider
http://www.pchrandos.com/images/P1120718.JPG you might meet on the ride.
The 200K brevet ride goes South to Malibu then back North to Montecito
(Santa Barbara) then back to Ventura. The scenery is impressive.

[RBW] Re: Meet a new Rivendellian today!

2008-12-26 Thread Doug Peterson
The Oceanside train station is convenient. OC IE people can get there on
Metrolink SD people can come up on the Coaster. From the station, a good
general direction is to go inland (east) along the river trail up to
Fallbrook, south past Escondido, then there's a variety of ways to go west
back to the coast, depending on how much mileage we want to do. I'd suggest
something in the 40-50ish range.

Another option that's a little more complicated would be to meet in Rancho
Bernardo area do part of the Amgen route. The complication would be
either driving to the meet point (b!) or taking the Sprinter from
Oceanside into Escondido (a 1 hour trip).

So David has 3-5 from the IE. I don't know any other Rivendellians here in
OC who'd join us but a couple of my touring buds would be interested. How
many San Diegans? And you San Diego locals may have routes you'd like to
suggest.

Can't speak for other SoCalians, but I was thinking Oceanside to somewhere
in S.D.??? Or San Clemente to Oceanside and back. Guess it'll depend if
more O.C. people jump on board vs. S.D. folk. I've got about three-five IE
people that can Metrolink down to wherever...

and most of my riding has always been errand riding and commuting. But I've
been trying, as I age, to ease off and ride for the sake of riding, not for
some nebulous inner time trial goal.

I find that off road riding -- which for me is dirt road riding -- is more
relaxing, since I don't have, quasi programmed into me after so many years,
the need to cover so much distance in so much time; the conditions on dirt
are simply different enough that the mindset gets shut off. In short, I tend
to ride in a more relaxed way on dirt. Fortunately, I have access to miles
of nice doubletrack and acequia (old irrigation ditch) roads literally a
stone's throw from my front door, and they actually serve to get me to
places -- church, store, Mom -- so that they are becoming a relaxing
alternative to heartrate hell road riding. Now if only I could get a

 Esteban,
That sounds good to me, I'll be back after the new year as well. I
know I met a guy in Encinitas one that said he rode an Atlantis I
 think...

Actually, the similarities are intentional. The Bleriot was intended
 to

Congrats on 1500. I often am reluctant to ride when I'm tired or busy,
thinking that if I can't ride hard for at least 20 miles (road) or 15 miles
(dirt roads) it doesn't count -- a strange fixation since I've never raced
and most of my riding has always been errand riding and commuting. But I've
been trying, as I age, to ease off and ride for the sake of riding, not for
some nebulous inner time trial goal.

Now if only I could get a
Rivendell ss/fixed 29er that will take true 60s and fenders ...

Patrick not gonna look at my odometers until after Jan 1 Moore

BTW- I reached my yearly goal of 1500 miles today! :) I realize 1500

Congratulations Chris! That's a significant milestone. Just don't get too
serious about the riding. ;^) It may not always be easy, but it is
supposed to be fun.
