I've spent more than I care to admit on bicycles and bicycle upgrades over
the years. But, that's part of the fun of it as a hobby and I would not
begrudge anyone spending on their bikes. We aren't all bike mechanics or
know how to install parts, etc. And, that's okay. LBShops can certainly use
the business. I've dabbled in installing parts and adjusting brakes and can
do a decent job. I'm even considering building up an Atlantis soon but have
my LBS as a backup and I suspect I'll need their help.

Thanks, I’m glad you like it. A lot of care went into putting it all together,
and especially since the shop hadn’t seen parts like these come to their work
stand before.

I consider it generally bad form to delve into one’s income level, so I will
steer the conversation in a different direction. I will say that I enjoy
supporting small businesses and that the $225 spent on labor was money well
spent. Just a thought.

If the sound is coming from the rear it's probably coming from the spring
loaded pawls in cassette body rubbing against the ratchets when you coast.
From what I've read, Bitex uses 6 pawls; many manufacturers have only
three. The noise varies all over the place. Shimano hubs are almost
silent. DT used to make one that was so loud that it sounded like a
machine gun - you could hear it a block away.

Re: [RBW] Re: Next Level Clementine

2020-06-04 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I just got back from a 10.7 miler. It was great. My dyno is the best thing ever
and It’s such a treat. My tires/wheels are terrific. I love them. I am going to
jump on the Clem H after awhile and see how great the difference is. The
changes I’ve made make my Clem more manageable for me. I don’t know if it’s
just me personally, or my size/stature with the new geo, but I was not as
confident on this bike as I was on my Betty Foy. My Clementine now handles
better and feels lighter. It’s going to give me that “extension of my own body”
feel soon, and I’ve only got 21 miles on the new configuration.

Observations, which may be hogwash:

~My front end feels lighter. My narrower bars make me feel more secure. I feel
like I can make sharper turns and quick adjustments now. I did swerve once or
twice tonight and it was nothing to me. That’s a new feeling with this bike.

~When the mechanic wheeled my bike out the tail light was blinking. “Oh, can
you make it a solid light?” I begged. He was so confused. He said something
about the manufacturer makes a switch, but then realized what I meant = the
stuttering light was because he was generating a small amount of power, causing
the light to flicker. I was elated to know it’s a solid light - I despise
blinking lights. I have not gotten used to the sudden flashing from the lights
as I wheel the bike around, but I like it now because I am reminded I! Have!
Dyno!

~Someone should have told me about dyno sounds. You know when you go fishing
and you’ve got a whopper on the line? That sound of the drag on fishing line -
that’s your drivetrain when you get dyno. My bike was nearly silent before. In
that first moment on my test ride in the parking lot, I thought, “Alright, WHAT
did they do to this bike? Did they make it more rad without my approval???”

~Tubeless is amazing. Or maybe it’s the Gravel Kings. I don’t know but it’s
just sosmooth. Easy. No jarring, even over the MUP expansion joints (is
that the fancy name for lines in the concrete?).

~I”m glad I got a bigger front chain ring. I needed a harder gear, and even
more so with the lightening of this bike.

That’s all I can think of for now. I cannot wait to do this again for my
Platypus bike. Who knows what James and Candice will think up next.

Eric, you know what that hub shiner is good for? When I put the bike on my bike

it’s just a lovely leather cuff - and most days, I wear a leather cuff on my

hub with a red light. So nicely pulled together.

I'm especially happy that you had three glorious miles with Dyno and
tubeless GravelKings. You, me, and another other #RivSister M. took a leap
of faith with tubeless and I think it's safe to say we are all quite happy
with the ride. The Edux light you got I think is the same one I got and is
super bright compared to my other Dyno light.

It's nice that the bike shop stood up to the quality of your bike with the
quality of their work.

Re: [RBW] Re: Next Level Clementine

2020-06-04 Thread Leah Peterson
Mark - do I really deserve the weight weenie label if I have 2 handlebar bags
and front AND rear racks? 

I’m starting to think of this bike as the Clem of Many Colors, but Kaleidoscope
Klem definitely works, too...

Ryan - the reason you feel angst over my bike problems is because I come over
here and publicly howl over them. Sorry about that ! But, do you also feel my
joy when it all gets solved? I hope so! Yes, I have spent a LOT of money on
this bike, but I regret nothing. I love love love a step-through and in RBW
Blue, it’s just, well, I have heart eyes for it. You’ll understand when you get
your Clem built up and on the road.

I can’t tell you how nice it was not to swing a leg over my bike last night;
I’ve gotten used to the giant 52 Clem H I’ve been riding in place of my
Clementine. I had about zero standover, and I felt like I was riding my best
friend’s giant quarter horse, back in girlhood.

Well, this cup of coffee is finished, and the sun is already high in the sky. I
best get out there before the temps get much warmer. I’ll be back later!
