Paul Thumbies are bases for shifters. You decide what shifter to put on there. If you choose to use friction shifters like Rivendell Silvers, there is no constraint. If you choose to use Shimano Barcons on your Paul Thumbies, and insist on using the indexed one for the rear, and prefer to

shouldve been more specific. running shimano bar ends on thumbies, but all in friction mode. can i just swap thumbies to opposite/inside sides and then switch cables? i guess what im now asking is, can the intended front shifter pull enough cable to run the rear derailleur. i assume the

Yes, you can do that. The two shifters have the same barrel diameter, and will both pull the same total amount of cable. A Right side Shimano barcon shifter, installed on the Left grip in the inside position on a Paul Thumbie, in friction mode, can be used to actuate your front derailer. A
