Ty: I rode south in May and had to bypass Big Sur by going inland through King City, Fort Hunter Liggett, Nacimiento, and Paso Robles on the way to Morro Bay. It’s a longer route with a lot of climbing and many sections with limited services, but it made for a great (if long) day on the bike. Here’s my route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/19109436 If Big Sur is open next May when I do my coast ride again, I’ll go back to that route. --Eric N www.CampyOnly.com CampyOnlyGuy.blogspot.com Twitter: @CampyOnlyGuy > On Aug 30, 2017, at 10:12 AM, Ty Grahamwrote: > > There's a lot of discussion of big sur over on the ACA forums. [RBW] Re: Portland to SF?
There was a massive landslide just north of Ragged Point that is unlikely to be resolved with a year. One proposal is to re-route the highway around the slide which would be a massive project. The bridge that's out is high priority, and will expedite repair of smaller slides and other work. Likely that within a year you will be able to at least ride your bike as far south as Naciemento Ferguson Rd, then take that steep climb up to Hunter Ligget and pick up a southbound route into Paso Robles. However, another winter like last one could further impact the highway. dougP On Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 9:17:37 PM UTC-7, Benz, Sunnyvale, CA wrote: > > Since we're touched upon Rivendell touring setups, can I ask for your > experience, hints, and advice doing this ride, southbound, and especially > if you started in SF? What exactly is the status of Big Sur? I've been planning to do the SF to LA ride late next year (circa September 2018), and can't seem to find out whether the route is projected to be open. Re: [RBW] Re: Portland to SF?
Seventeen years ago, I was 6 months away from getting my Atlantis, and 2 months away from starting my job at Rivendell. I made the coast trip on a (too small for me) Trek that I bought at Goodwill for $24.99. After I started at Riv, I gave it to my then RBW co-worker, Joe Bauder, who --I think-- either still has it or only very recently got rid of it. One thing about camping vs hotels is there will be other folks doing the same route and some likely one the same pace as you. It makes for some great company around the campfire at night if you choose to camp. I made some very cool friends when I did it that I still have to this day. Camping is not hard at all imo. You'll be able to pick up supplies every day so you don't need to carry much. Great route. Lots of little towns, which makes it easy to travel light. Plus, you'll be riding all the best parts of it. If you end up riding through Nehalem, stop at Buttercup for THE BEST chowder on the Oregon coast. Each serving is made fresh with super unique flavors. Gluten free and vegan options too! I second Doug's recommendations and John's book recommendations. My wife and I rode the Oregon section in 2008 fully loaded on a Trek 1000 and a skinny cyclecross bike doing 50 miles a day. We didn't have the right equipment, the wind was always in our face and I learned why I should have purchased a Brooks B17. It was still a great ride, great campgrounds and inould do it again just with a Riv next time. The book was great. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Benz: I forgot to mention one way cars. Between major airports, e.g., SJO to PDX, you can often rent a one way dirt cheap but you have to shop around. Rental companies often wind up with an excess in one location & shortage at another. You'd need to check several agencies, and it's luck of the draw on what you get. But if you're traveling alone, you really don't care and the a tiny hatchback is perfect for one person + one bike. OTH they could have a glut of giant SUVs. And of course there's the shear hassle of driving 700 miles. But it's a decent option to keep in mind. dougP On Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 9:17:37 PM UTC-7, Benz, Sunnyvale, CA wrote: > > Since we're touched upon Rivendell touring setups, can I ask for your > experience, hints, and advice doing this ride, southbound, and especially > if you started in SF? [RBW] Re: Portland to SF?
Take the Atlantis; that's its mission in life. You've got the most comprehensive resource in Bicycling the Pacific Coast. Hiker / biker camp facilities in Oregon are generally good. Inexpensive & usually hot showers. Some are even in towns so you can walk to meals & still camp out. Plus you meet some interesting people in campgrounds. Things thin out a bit in Northern California as far as lodging so having the camp gear will give you flexibility. Take your time & stop for side trips. Two weeks is reasonable. You won't have to do any days like you did today but you will be carrying gear which makes a difference. Below Eureka / Arcata take the side trip to Ferndale; it's a better ride & rejoins 101 at Scotia. In Oregon, take the side trip called Slab Creek / old 101 that drops you out in Otis. Stop for pie at the Otis Pie Co. Great lighthouses in Oregon. Seems like each one has a unique story. Amtrak may be your best bet, esp now that they have roll on / roll off service but be sure to make a bike reservation. Another thought would be to post here for anyone headed to Portland who can offer a ride. I did that one time when Amtrak fell thru & it worked. It was Seattle to Anacortes, a much shorter distance, but list members can be really helpful. dougP On Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 9:17:37 PM UTC-7, Benz, Sunnyvale, CA wrote: > > Since we're touched upon Rivendell touring setups, can I ask for your > experience, hints, and advice doing this ride, southbound, and especially > if you started in SF?
