2018-06-13 Thread Scott Calhoun
Bill,

I'm impressed with the Ruta Loca route: 13k of climbing over 125miles--it
is like the Eroica California Heroic route with an extra 4k of climbing.
Also, I really enjoyed your recap, the video, and especially the
soundtrack. La Ruta Loca is now officially on my list. Thanks for sharing.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report--La Ruta Loca 200k

2018-06-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
Paul asked where I read that Tour de France riders drank coke and OJ in the
early 1980s.

It was probably in Bicycling magazine or maybe Winning. I read both of those in
those years. It might have been in a Sean Kelly bio, because I remember reading
about the coke-can practical joke he would play. They’d get their musette at
the feed zone, which always included a can of coke. He’d dump the van of coke
into his water bottle and then reach down and drag the empty van on the ground.
The sound was exactly like the sound of a pedal going into somebody’s spokes so
it would scare the bejeezus out of the peloton.

Like it or not, I did manage to make my music video. It's easier to
motivate oneself to gather the footage if you have a concept ahead of
time. For me, 'concept' means a song. The song is my own bootleg
recording of "Kopi Luwak", played by the El Cerrito High School Jazz
Ensemble. My son Henry plays trombone for the jazz ensemble. Check it out
if you like. It's about 5:30 in length.

Great read, and congrats on the ride. I’ve ridden every inch of that, but good
Dog, not in the same day...

Fantastic, Bill! A delight to read. Thank you.

“the solemn SFR oath promising "not to do stupid stuff." Well, I’m ruled out.
It would seem taking the oath breaks the oath? Grin.

With abandon,

Bravo Bill! I felt tired from merely reading your account! Reminiscing
about my college days when we tackled some of the 'Tam trails on La Ruta
Loca 200k weekly (no rangers with radar back then), I can only imagine what
an epic ride must have been! And yes, of course it's a downhill century
from the top of Mt Tam. Thanks for the ride report!
