I recently sprung for the new Nitto Choco and flipped them after using the

cleared up my shoulder pain, so I felt confident enough to run the bars
up-side down for a more forward-leaning cockpit. Really and truly feel like

I like the flipped bar. What is it?

I've been flipping "North Road type bars" for decades because I find them
more comfortable to grip at the bends in that position. I did that with the
MAP Ahearne bar, and it's surprisingly comfortable (to me, who hitherto
liked only drop bars).

2021-05-17 Thread Jeffrey S
Jacob, The ride to Steep Ravine was harder than I expected, but totally
doable. I was in full sunlight the whole way there so I got pretty hot. I
had to walk my bike a few times. But it only took 3.5-4 hours to get there.
And I was going pretty slow. The ride back was overcast and easier. But
like others said, there are so many places to ride down there! The other
thing is that it is really hard to get a site or cabin at Steep Ravine, so
I'd look into that if you are interested in staying there.

especially good built up with no fenders and with black knobby tires (like

@Nathen

I think I lucked out. I picked up this one at Blue Lug in Tokyo. It had a
small bit of damage (just paintwork) so I'm guessing that's why no one
picked it up. I think the sage model is quite a few years old now so it
must of been there a while!

2021-04-18 Thread Nathan F
Agreed Jason, I never get tired of seeing them. I had no clue there were
any Sage Hillbornes left, and am glad to see one built up like that. It's
where I think mine will eventually end up.

For some reason, don't ask me why, to my eye the sage green Sams look
especially good built up with no fenders and with black knobby tires (like
above). Riv used to have one built up like that on the landing page of
their old site. Perhaps thats why I'm so attracted to them? Who knows, but
they look GOOD!

2021-04-05 Thread Jason Fuller
Joel - cheers! I'm at around 1550 km on the Bombadil odometer now, which
surpasses how much mileage I put on the Clem by 400 km - and in half the
time!

JS - They are XTR M980 cranks, apparently the last 104 BCD version before
going to the non-symmetric bolt pattern. I bought the matching outer ring
on closeout from Universal but turns out I need extra long chainring bolts
to use it, so it remains in the parts bin :)

2021-02-12 Thread Tim Baldwin
Adam, those are Big Ben Plus tires. Something with more tread would
probably be better in the snow but I end up riding a lot of pavement here.
They're a good compromise and very long lasting. I ride outside year round.
If you have the right gear and attitude it's doable. I am getting a little
tired of all the single digit mornings lately. We had a pretty mild winter
up until the end of January. Hit me up if you're out here next winter and
we can do some winter cruising.

Thanks Patrick,

Tires are RH hurricane ridge endurance compound. Great tires, if a little
heavy compared to the Barlow pass I usually run on this bike. Crankset is
VO. I was reluctant to buy it but very glad I did. It has exceeded my
expectations.

To answer your more personal questions, I am a working expat from the US.
My wife is English/Greek and we enjoy our life in Greece. We are both
music producers / composers and work for ourselves.

Andy,
Wonderful story. The photographs really bring it to life. You've posted about
your adventures on the Ram many times; it's always a pleasure to see and hear
about the enduring relationship between someone and their bicycle. A lot of
that going around in this forum.
Wishing you and your Ram many more years of rewarding rides.

Austin,
I'm glad that you were able to stuff 2.6" tires in that Clem, but I'm
pretty surprised. I've got 2.4" tires in mine and the chain rubs the tire
a bit in the lowest gear on the small ring. It's not an issue and it's not
constant, but when I'm on rough terrain it will wiggle around enough to
where it'll rub a bit. Cool bike man.

I want it all!, at least anything that might fit. I think the Wolbis would be a
bit small, and I do have more than my fair share of bikes, but no, more please.
And having had the pleasure of meeting Tall Paul last fall, I know he's 1-
super nice, and 2- his bikes nearly fit me!! So I had to holler.
I admit, I was a little sad seeing that much seat post on this bike, knowing
that mine would be a little bit more, and thus, I might never know the joy of a
swoop tubed hillibike . But maybe, if one shows up down the line and I "need"
a drop bar racer, I might Snag it up .
So, to answer your question- nope, definitely don't need any smaller bikes, and
I picked up that second Rosco in hopes of never needing any more bikes ever.
I should set up my big Clem again, find joy in the swoopless...

Happy Rolling

Patrick, I have my Roadini set up with 35s...I think 38 would squeeze in but
this feels cushy considering the road-like frame and generous flex of the fork,

its in the sweet spot of being truly all road.

2020-07-27 Thread R Shannon
Erik,

I'm guessing your Roadini could fill the road +niche? But if you intend to
have it as your minimal, light as you can make it rider then Homer (650b?)
slotted in between Roadini/Sam would be very doable.

Yesterday saw my first encounter with a Roadini. As we approached each
other, on a path, I recognized it as a grilver Roadini and hollered at the
rider and asked him to stop so I could take a look.
You show me your Roadini and I'll show you my Homer:-) He was kind enough
to stop and chat for a few minutes (while observing proper distance). I was
impressed with the frame; much nicer in the "flesh" than in pictures. And
the components he used were well considered. All in all a handsome bike. If
not for Covid I would have asked him to swap bikes for a quick test ride.

As a bonus, while we were stopped, a double top tube orange Hillborne rode
by. Randomly seeing two Rivs in the wild in the span of a few minutes was a
first for me.

Cool that you are using the dt shifter bosses - for shifters and not cable
stops. Hope you enjoy your Roadini and thanks for posting the pic.

Best,
Rich in ATL

Homer was conceived as a MIT less expensive alternative to Homer/Saluki.
Capability wise, they are about the same. They do fire roads and light to
medium tours well. They are capable on roads but not pure road bikes. Now both
are MIT. Not sure why both still appear.

Thanks Rich, I do recall your post, I was just hoping for additional detail
from the two or three (including yourself) who've made similar comments.
Basically I am trying to understand how crazy it would be to own both (swap
my lighter roadie parts to the Homer, and rebuild the Sam to more of a

"Road+" type bikes.

I weighed my Sam, 27.5 lbs as it sits (while the Clem is 34 lbs with all

2020-07-26 Thread RichS
Jason,

I posted this on July 14 related to a question about the Roadini.

. . .MIT Homer - Lightest of the three. Now this is only a guess based on
past observations from others on the list - the Homer and the Roadini
frames weigh about the same. No doubt about it, the Homer rides lighter and
snappier than my Sam and Atlantis. Note: for comparison my Homer and Sam
have identical builds and geometry.

MIT Sam - Handles a good bit like the Homer but its stoutness makes it more
akin to the Atlantis. In my experience what sets it apart from the Atlantis
are the 650b wheels and the angles.

Update! Homer weight 27lbs. Sam weight 30lbs. Both bikes with metal
fenders and smallish handlebar bags. Hope this is helpful.

Best,
Rich in ATL

Sorry if you already answered this and I missed it, but: How does the ride
of your HOmer compare to that of your Hillborne? Is the Homer noticeably
more sprightly? Noticeably a better climber? Etc.

Thanks. I own a 700c Hillborne and love it, but I want to get a 650b bike,
also, and don't need something as stout as my Sam.

I'm just a couple hours north of that area; this is the north shore
mountains above Vancouver, BC. I wish we had the beautiful network of
forest roads that WA has! I envy the rides I read about in BQ, although
our terrain is closely matched. We have very few public forestry roads
near town, and of them most are dominated by dirt bikes and 4-wheelers..

Minimum clearances to the Rosé is about 5mm to the rear stay bridge and 4mm
either side of the fork crown. These tires shed mud pretty well so I'd say
it's no concern!

Hey David
the saddle is from Obsidian Monarch
it was a birthday gift from a friend of mine a few years ago...his friend
makes these saddles in CA.
I think he uses old Brooks frames and stretches new leathers over them and
does some psychedelic artwork etching in the leather.

Sugino crank (not sure which), with a Blackspire 46t ring. Probably Shimano
bb. VP Vice pedals
Ultegra 9-sp rear der with a Deore trigger shifter, prob Shimano
cassette,12-34
Nitto Dirt Drop with Soma Osprey bars, Ergon grips
Sunrace levers with Shimano DX v-brakes
Ritchey WCS seat post (it was the only 27.0 that I had), with a Selle
Anatomica Titanico
Rich-built wheels from a Riv prototype: Sphinx Rigida front, Velocity Atlas
(?) rear with LX hubs; Conti Tour Ride (tough and cheap and roll well
enough)
Most expensive splurge: Nitto basket rack, with Wald medium

I like it. Rides like a RIv.
