[RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?
Me again - I just use the 4 velcro straps and recently gave the brake straps a try (yup, they've good). I pulled the plastic bag stiffener out when it was new; just have the coroplast bottom stiffener in the bag. No decaleur. I slide the loop at the back of the front rack under the leather loop on the back of the bag. If I planned to often carry an expensive, relatively heavy, somewhat fragile device, I'd consider a handlebar bag that doesn't sit on a rack (Riv's Barsack, Acorn's handlebar bag, etc). While it may not be theoretically optimal for handling, the protection afforded through suspended fabric would outweigh the theoretical negative handling consequence. For me, IMO, YMMV, and all those other qualifiers. In other words, bag contents that sit on racks tend to get bounced around a lot. Defining what at least sometimes means to you, in addition to assessing your priorities (handling optimization, camera protection, aesthetics, ...) should help you decide which compromise to choose. Btw, I have carried the DSLR (Nikon D300 with two lenses) in an Ortlieb handlebar bag without problems. I run my Zugster rando bag un-decaleured on the Nitto Mini under a variety of trail and road conditions. The Mini rack keeps the load low and close, which I think is helpful. The heaviest thing I'll pack is a small Krypto lock, which is probably about the same weight as a DSLR and lens. I'm always careful to pack it low, centered and to the rear of the back - in the elbow of the platform to vertical support area. If I'd thought about it a bit more before ordering, I would have paid particular attention to the attachment to the platform of the rack. There's a little shifting which occurs as it can't be locked down with the authority of the NS L'il Loafer. On the road, rough roads and even graded dirt roads (i.e. fire roads), there's no problem. When negotiating rocky trails, technical singletrack and truly bumpy bits, I can see the bag flexing. It's a toughly constructed bag, though, so I'm not particularly worried about it. - Jim -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Send In Your Photos! - Here's how: http://www.cyclofiend.com/guidelines I had to ride slow because I was taking my guerrilla route, the one I follow when I assume that everyone in a car is out to get me. -- Neal Stephenson, Zodiac -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?
I do not use a decaleur, just the four velcro straps and the twobrake straps and the bag is very table. The weight of the camera shouldn't affect this bag, but I would certainly want to stuff a jacket or something in there to keep the camera from shifting. I ride lots of dirt roads and chip and seal, but no trails. Michael On Apr 3, 7:35 am, MichaelH mhech...@gmail.com wrote: I have no problem with this. Btw, I have carried the DSLR (Nikon D300 with two lenses) in an Ortlieb handlebar bag without problems. Thanks much, I have a 11X5X6 Madden bag on one drop barred bike with no support (except internal); a slightly smaller Kirkland on a wire stem-mount frame; and an Ostrich, considerably bigger than either, on the Sam Hill using a Nashbar front rack and VO decaleur. For something as large and potentially heavy as the Ostrich I'd recommend a rack and, if a rack, a decaleur seems the most convenient way to keep it in place. For smaller loads, say up to 5 lb, I myself would accept an unsupported bar bag as long as it was attached close to the bars and not like the old Nitto Boxy which was unduly high and for'ard. I think Ryan Watson, sometime of this list, simply bolted an Ostrich to a front rack. I tried toe straps, briefly, but they were unsatisfactory: the bag moved about too much. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?
I've done exactly what you describe using pretty much the same bag and a VO decaleur. My cables are routed all the way under the tape to the stem along with the brake cables. On my 64cm frame, we had to use a tandem cable for the rear derailleur as a result of the extra length. It is clean, and if done properly you can keep the cables out of the way of those two back pockets that face you on the bag. Bob H. [RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?
Larry: Lots of people run bar-ends with a handlebar bag. You'll be able to smoothly route the housings, one way or another: either all the way to the stem under the tape, or just straight out from the tape about 6 ahead of the shifters. If the latter, usually you can route the housings immediately beneath the h'bar bag. It will work fine. Such a routing path can even slightly help to steady the front end which will sometimes get wobbly when you put a rack and bag up there. All my bikes have either down-tube or bar-ends. I do prefer the cleaner look of down-tube shifters, but bar-ends are nice if you plan to shift often while out of the saddle (and in the drops). - Chris Kostman La Jollla, CA http://www.XO-1.org PS I caught that upgrading terminology. [RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?
PS As a follow-up, you may want to consider having your shifter cables cross along the down tube. In other words, the rear derailleur housing would loop from the shifter over to the left side of the down tube, and vice-versa. This makes a cleaner arc in many cases. I often set up bar-ends with the housings routed that way. On Mar 30, 8:55 pm, XO-1.org Rough Riders adventureco...@gmail.com wrote: Larry: Lots of people run bar-ends with a handlebar bag. [RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?
Larry, I use a Berthoud HB bag supported by a Mark's rack on my Hilsen with BE shifters and it works fine. You might want to leave the cables and housing a bit a tad longer to accommodate the bag. Not sure if this helps but take a gander: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335...@n00/3419940264/in/set-72157613195465589/ Like Chris I like the clean look of DT shifters but BE shifters are easier to deal with when I'm fatigued or riding off road. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
