After a few different attempts, one of which would of worked but just
looked ugly, I switched back to the paul center-pulls and eeked out just
enough reach on them for the rear brake. Rack mounts just fine without the
Silver brakes in the way.
The bullmoose bosco (proto)bleriot is so much fun
I don't know your specific load carrying needs, but you could ditch the rack
and just use a saddlebag. Some Carradices and the RBW bags are huge.
I stopped using a rear rack when I got my Carradice bag, which was bigger than
any rack mounted bag I could find, so I didn't need a rack anymore.
Riv has bent/bendable struts available-just pick the length you need:

Nitto racks come with both bent and straight struts included, FWIW. Maybe
a local to you lister has some you can get without paying shipping?

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I have those bent struts from my purchase
of the rack, but will likely need to do more bending. Or some combo of the
ideas here. Haven't gotten a chance to mess with the rack mounting since
Sunday, but hope to have a chance by the weekend.

I swapped out my paul centerpull brakes for Silver brakes... Why?

silver's have more reach, and this bike needs it. Potentially interested
in selling them; need to make sure I can get this all dialed in first.
Will post if I decide to sell em.
Thanks,
Dave

good luck. I think every rack should have a center tongue so that a brake
bridge can be used to mount it if necessary.

Ha! Classic.
Can you make a stand-off for the strut? Like 1/2 of steel tubing? Or a curved
strut? A cutoff arc of chainring or worn cog, with two holes drilled?

the Paul Racer's have 55-67mm reach; the silver (tektro 556) have 55-73
Either way I'm having a hell of a time getting the pads to land squarely on
the rims. I guess this bike is a prototype for a reason. Any berkeley
folks willing and able to give me a hand would be much appreciated!

I'm in El Cerrito. I can have a look at it for you if you need it. If I
wanted to pay a Berkeley professional mechanic to work on my Rivendell, I
would probably take the job to Justin at Blue Heron.

Tried to post before but I think google ate it, sorry if this comes through
twice.
I had to bend the struts in order to avoid the same issue when I installed
a Tubus rack on a 54 cm AHH with Silver calipers. Riv's youtube site has a
video showing you how to do it: hold the struts in a vice and
Are you sure this frame was designed or 650b? If the brake reach is 73
with 650b; it would be 54 with 700c, which should at least handle a 38mm
tire and fenders.

It became the bleriot, so I had always assumed so. It also came to me as a
fully-built 650b bike. Not sure how the previous owner dialed in their
brakes, but when i contacted him he said he never had any trouble.
The problem is likely yours-truly.

This. Or, just bend a dogleg strut to get around the brake. The strut is
not carrying a heavy load, its purpose is to stabilize the top of the rack.
You could get all fancy and do the other side to match, if that's your
thing, or just leave the left side looking different.

I've been able to resolve the same problem when changing from cantis to
V-brakes on my Atlantis by moving the left side seat stay strut to the
inboard side of the eyelet. The lack of symmetry does not seem to bother
anything.

Thanks Doug. I tried that out as well, but still no room. The silver brakes
have better reach than the Paul's, otherwise I'd just swap back.
Wish my tinkering didn't always lead to more tinkering!
