Thanks to riv for deciding to do a poster.

I got a number of positive replies about the framing and I wanted to
pass on some info about the frame and shop:

the frameshop is house of frames:
 http://cravenallengallery.com/framing/

I talked to the framers and they gave me the whole frame info:

The frame is from bravura moulding at
www.bravuramoulding.com
the frame id number is:
BMC 78-2-CD
CD == Cinnamon/Diamond - which is color + design

Most frame shops should be able to order this frame.

Hope this helps anyone looking for the same.

Steve,
Thanks! I didn't decide on the mat. I took it to the frame shop that
framed both of the Hiawatha posters I have and told them I wanted it
framed. I only picked out the frame itself, they took care of the

Yes, very, very nice. I am thoroughly inspired.

Though, this hits on something that always bothers me about framing -- it
costs considerably more than the art! A frame shop here in Portland has as
their catch-phrase, Re-frame your art. I've always thought it should be
re-art your frames. At least, it's much cheaper that way.

And, um, this hits on something that bothers my about bikes -- it costs
more to build out a frame than the cost of the frame. Argh, frames. :-)

I disagree. I think of it this way. If I like a poster or a picture or
a painting I want to protect and preserve it. A good frame does that.
It's UV-glass so the picture doesn't fade or yellow. It's a solid
frame with a good backing. Any paper used it in is archive-grade. I've
just made sure that this picture can last and stay with me.

It does cost more money, sure, but it preserves the VALUE to me.

It is important to be able to judge the VALUE of something versus the COST.

No, I get that. And I completely understand the economics for why frames
cost so much more than prints. However, there's a part of me that can't get
over that whenever I see a nice print I'd like, that the cost of the print
is going to be but a small down payment -- internal voice: Wow, nice
print. Do I like it $25? You bet. Do I like it $125? Umm...

As for the Riv print, yeah, I like it $125+. But still...

[RBW] Re: rivendell poster framed

2012-07-20 Thread pb
Since the subject is for the moment on-topic, what are anyone's secrets for
reasonably cost-effective framing? Last weekend I took a photo of a
project I recently completed to Aaron Brothers, the stripmall chain framing
place. Simple, rectangular frame profile, 3 white mat, 20x30 image. The
clerk looked me in the eye, and without giggling, said that'll be $550, how
would you like to pay? I explained to her that I was stunned by that
price, and that I would make other arrangements.

I guess I'll look into some of the independents -- maybe it's as simple as
that.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: rivendell poster framed

2012-07-20 Thread Peter Pesce
I think anything related to art gets a mark-up similar to what happens when
you put the word marine or aviation in front of a piece of hardware.
Or, perhaps, people think the mark up on anything called frame is the same as
that on eyeglass frames, which is around 1000%.
To be fair, back in the day an ornate, hand carved and leafed frame was a work
of art its own right. I don't think a piece of aluminum extrusion chop-sawed to
length and assembled by a $8/ hr kid is quite the same.
My motto: You can always DIY. If you end up doing a great job, you saved money.
If you do a lousy job, you'll now know what you pay for!

According to the web site copy of the independent outfit Seth got his from,
a lot of the chains expect you'll be using a 50% off coupon. $275 for a
frame that large, assuming it has UV glass doesn't sound too out of line
(in my admittedly very limited experience).

Since the subject is for the moment on-topic, what are anyone's secrets
for reasonably cost-effective framing? Last weekend I took a photo of a
project I recently completed to Aaron Brothers, the stripmall chain framing
place. Simple, rectangular frame profile, 3 white mat, 20x30 image. The
clerk looked me in the eye, and without giggling, said that'll be $550, how
would you like to pay? I explained to her that I was stunned by that
price, and that I would make other arrangements.

I guess I'll look into some of the independents -- maybe it's as simple as
 that.

 Thanks,

I think it came out great - especially how the frame color matches the
 text pretty well.

Thanks to riv for deciding to do a poster.

2012-07-20 Thread Doug Magney
I put mine in an Ikea frame, $20. The mat is not quite the right size, so I
might have that part redone. But the frame is of decent quality at a very
reasonable price.

VERY NICE!!

I would love to see one of these framed with some steel tubing, maybe
lugged at the corners... perhaps each tube a different color, maybe with a
few decals from say, a Hilsen... A Bomba... Atlantis or maybe a
Hunqa... h
