[RBW] SOMA xpress tires

2016-11-27 Thread Fullylugged
Pari Motos are more easily cut and wear out at about 1,800 miles. I get twice
that on Panaracers. Will try the non hypertex version. First ride was pretty
good over coarse pavement on the Xpress tires

[RBW] SOMA xpress tires

2016-11-24 Thread Philip Kim
Pretty good. Ran them on a conversion. A bit stiff but not too bad. No real
reason to get them now that panaracer has 650b without the hypertext casing.
Also Pari motos are cheaper, and faster.

[RBW] SOMA xpress tires

2016-11-24 Thread Fullylugged
I just got a pair from RBW and mounted them on Synergy rims. Size 38B-650.
Measures 35ish in width. The tire is much harder to mount on the rim than a
Grand Bois or Pascenti. Might be an issue if you are cold and tired and running
close on time to finish a brevet. Tread is Pasela. Heavy tires despite the
fiber bead. Inflates evenly and no problem seating properly. Felt fine on a
trial around the block. Taking them for 54 miles tomorrow. They replace a pair
of well worn Grand Bois Oursons.

Re: [RBW] SOMA xpress tires

2016-09-09 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I also use them on my commuter. Definitely not Compass/Grand Bois ride
quality, but my only flat was a pinch flat that was not the tire's fault.
I use the tire mainly to avoid flats and avoid delays in my commute. I
have gotten 2 flats on my Hetres caused by metal wires and glass shard that
may have been prevented on the Xpress, but maybe not...

Re: [RBW] SOMA xpress tires

2016-09-09 Thread WETH
I commute on the Soma Xpress 650bx38; they measure about 36 on my rims.
Initially, I had a flat in both front and rear tires during the first hundred
miles. (I wasn't happy with that for commuting purposes). However, I have now
ridden 1,000 miles around the Washington, DC area with no additional flats. I
agree with Zed's assessment, "Good ride, feel fast, not the best at cornering
but not awful."

I might try a set of Compass tires when the Soma wear out, but I might buy
another set of Somas if they remain impervious to flats.

Re: [RBW] SOMA xpress tires

2016-09-09 Thread Zed Martinez
I rode the 38mm 650b New Xpress last year. Good ride, feel fast, not the best
at cornering but not awful, they were the only tire I've ever commuted on that
had zero flats while I ran them. Glad others have had less flats with Compass,
but I had the flats the first month I ran them and still occasionally pick out
small pieces of glass (I run tire liners now, I know, I know...) Clearly I just
live in a bad area for flats, but to that end the New Xpress did not ride so
much worse than the Compass that I wouldn't go back today if they suddenly
existed in 48mm. They were quite tough tires for how will they rolled.

Re: [RBW] SOMA xpress tires

2016-09-09 Thread Reed Kennedy
SOMA New Xpress: I have only tried the relatively narrow versions
(somewhere around 32mm) on 700C rims. I found them indistinguishable from
the belted (TG, PT, etc) Paselas.

Which is to say I liked them quite a bit years back, but consider them kind
of a utility tire these days. Not really in the same league as the Compass
tires in my opinion, but probably only one or two leagues back.

Following Jan's advice I am now running wide supple non-reenforced tires at
low pressure even on the dirty city streets of San Francisco. Three months
in, I've yet to have a flat. If my good fortune continues I'll be happy to
bid reenforced tires like the Xpress adieu, but I'll probably keep using
the standard Pasela in city bikes just because they are such an excellent
deal.

Anyone try these yet? If so, what are your thoughts? I love the feel of
Compass and Panaracer tires and am always on the look out for similar type
tires to try. I'd be getting the 650b if I buy them. A bit narrower at 38
then I normally shoot for but I have a lot of bikes that have different
tire tolerances, so they would be useable at that width.
