On my Appaloosa the internal diameter of the seat tube was actually
slightly over 26.8. I tried three different 26.8 posts I had, including the
one supplied with the frame, and they were all slightly loose with the
binder bolt not tightened. As I had a 27.0 Nitto and an adjustable reamer,
I reamed the seat tube so that the 27.0 post was an exact fit in the seat
tube.

Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

2024-04-16 Thread 'Michael Kashuba' via RBW Owners Bunch
Very interesting indeed. About a year after Rivendell built up my orange 60cm Appaloosa, I was on a “Bike Around the Buttes” ride in Northern California and my seat post began gradually slipping down. I tightened it a bit more at a mid-ride rest stop, and it broke in two…. without much torque at all. I was amazed…..Luckily, I was able to “borrow” a less essential but same size bolt from my pannier rack, and everything has been fine the last few years. Is it possible that Rivendell received a bad batch of bolts? Odd….Sent from my iPhoneOn Apr 16, 2024, at 9:10 PM, Diana H wrote:I also snapped the seat binder bolt on my new Platypus. I also snapped the seat binder bolt on my new Platypus. No amount of
tightening would keep my post from sliding. I posted about this on Reddit
and somebody told me that I needed to grease the threads. When I tried to
remove the bolt it snapped. I replaced with a random bolt from a hardware
store and used grease. Hasn't slipped again.

My greased Roadini binder failed almost immediately with very little torque
applied. Seems it was slightly too short for the job. Replaced with this
bolt and this nut

long for the application but it works great. The blackish nut is not my

Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

2024-04-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Blue Loctite kept a slightly undersized thinwall Syncos titanium post from
slipping (1" per 2 miles) on my 1999 Riv Road custom fixie gofast until I
replaced it with an Am Classic and then with a 7410 Dura Ace.

Blue Loctite can do most things: do your taxes, weed your garden, watch
your toddler, prepare a gourmet meal. I used it liberally on the cradle of
a Nitto 1-bolt seatpost to keep the very improperly set up saddle from
changing angle on me mid-ride.

I do agree that a new seatpost or honing are better fixes, but FWIW.

Same thing happened on my brand new Platypus last year. Seatpost was
slipping and twisting and I overtightened it and snapped the bolt. Replaced
it with a spare from my bolts tray and it hasn't slipped in almost a year.

The binder bolt snapped because the seatpost was too small. The bolt and
post need to be replaced so this doesn't happen again.

I remember I had this occur on an old Clem I had as well.

Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

2024-04-14 Thread Igor
Agreed, thanks for sharing the information Danny. Per suggestion by Alex W,
I also will swap the bolt for a black socket cap instead of stainless.
Stronger but no galling..

@Danny -
Very good to know. I thank-you for the information. I think I will grease
mine as a precaution. I'm sure that Igor appreciates it, as well.

Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

2024-04-13 Thread Danny
I’ve had that happen on a new Riv before.

This is from a Riv newsletter last year:

*Also, make sure to grease the binder bolts before you tighten them down.
They ship to us dry and they have a tendency to gall and not tighten down
enough unless they're greased up.*
