Excellent discussion, I appreciate so many strong and well informed
answers! As tempting as it is to splurge on a Phil/Son duo I'm going to go
for utility/economy with the following;
Shimano DH-3D72 Dyno (it's centerlock but I can't find 36 holes any other
way... thats not a problem right?)
Tony , XT Silver, Front and Rear 36 hole :)

Tony,
There seems to be a silver DH-3N80 with 36 holes available here (in
Germany). There's also an XT dynamo hub (Silver, aluminium axle, 36 holes.
DH-T780.) but I don't know how it compares to Shimano's other dynohubs.
These pages are in German, I'm afraid:

Any thoughts? I can get the XT hub pretty cheap, VO would appear to win on
looks but will cost me about double. Phil/Paul would be great but not in
the budget for this wheelset.

Actually, go with LX. More durable than the XT, it's only drawback compared to
the XT is a little bit of weight. These are things I have not directly tested
on my own; I am repeating what Rich at Rivendell told me. My LX hub wheels have
been outstanding. The hubs look really good and cost less
