Giro ski helmet is the best for winter commuting. It looks cool, is
comfortable, and is a lot better than trying to wear a beanie or some sort of
hat underneath a regular vented bicycle helmet designed to cool your head.
The newer Giro helmets have easy opening vents. I typically ride for 10
Like Tim, Merino works for me. I wear wool caps down to about 30F, and ski caps
below that. Thicker wool socks in roomier shoes or sandals, and layered wool
clothes. The early RBW wool caps are prone to running dye when you sweat, and
the later ones have thick seams that hurt under a helmet.
No matter what the temperature is, and no matter what I'm wearing, I sweat.
I've found that wool is the only thing that can keep me warm while damp or wet,
so I have a few different weight stocking caps (the kidz these days call them
"beanies", but they don't have propellors) made by Ibex.
I guess not rivy but I picked up an earlier incarnation of this and it is
GREAT! I usually also wear some sort of wool neck warmer.
