electrolytes really help with the heat, and I keep Smart Water in my water
bottles.
San Antonio hasn't blocked off downtown blocks and given them to bikes as
Austin has done, but downtown is quite bike-friendly, and *San Antonio's
greenway system and The Mission Trail
*

have surpassed what Austin offers - they're working on connecting them all

[RBW] Re: Austin Ride Recommendations from Downtown?

2018-06-12 Thread David B
Thanks for the recommendations! I hadn't even thought about a bike on this
trip, just didn't realize Austin was so bike friendly and there were trails
right out of downtown. Had I known, I would've tried to bring a bike with
me.
I did get a B-cycle 3-day pass, which was a reasonable $18. The bikes
themselves took a bit to adjust to, but ended up being alright getting me
around. They don't seem to be consistently maintained though. At a docking
station, I'd have to check tire pressures to select a bike as most had too
low pressure to be safely ridden imo.
I explored downtown and East Austin a bit by bike and did a loop of Lady
Bird Lake. The heat wasn't something I was used to, so I got in less rides
than I wanted, but it was fun.
Austin is definitely now on my list of places to visit with a bike in tow.

Ok never mind, I can see that you're here now.

If you don't want an organized tour, the hike and bike trail is a good
east-west route.

If you want a north-south route I'd try the City of Austin Bike Route 31.
(downtown only)
https://austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Transportation/2017_Austin_Bike_Map_-_Side_2.pdf
(city wide)
https://austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Transportation/2017_Austin_Bike_Map_-_Side_1.pdf
(interactive/ArcGIS)

hope this is helpful!

This place is run by a friend of mine, I recommend it over a b-cycle, which
aren't much fun to ride if you ask me.

When are you coming?

I agree, the best short ride near downtown is the granite and boardwalk
trails on Ladybird Lake. Mostly stay on the south side of the lake, the
path has several breaks in it on the north side. It gets less crowded as
you ride east toward Roy G Guerrero Park.

There are several other places to rent nicer bikes than b-cycle, e.g.
http://www.austinbiketoursandrentals.com/contact/

[RBW] Re: Austin Ride Recommendations from Downtown?

2018-06-11 Thread Ron Mc
the crushed granite trails around Lady Bird Lake, through Barton Springs
and Zilker Park are nice, shared with pedestrians, and offer shade, which
is very important in the summer

Two side trips that should be on your list are Hut's Hamburgers - their
hamburgers are fun, their onion rings a food group, and their $3.50
milkshake is the $5 milkshake from Pump Fiction. Other side trip is
Sweetish Hill Bakery, where their delightful pastry matches their name -
merely sweetish
