The gravel in Flint Hills of Kansas is notorious for shredding tires. Its not
unusual for people to get 6 flats during the race. Consider that the Native
Americans used the flint for their arrowheads. Just google Dirty Kanza tire
choice sometime if you are up for some light reading...

Tony, I hear you about the tunnel vision. On the car ride along the route back
to Emporia, I realized I had passed several herds of cattle and not even
noticed them. Maybe coming from a rural background I'm just used to being
around cattle. The Sam handled the rough roads beautifully! I've
Those pics are awesome. Despite my failed BB, I still had a blast and plan
to be there again next year with my Sam!

Chad,
I can't believe I rode by without noticing your bike!!! I must have had
the tunnel vision going with the road being so crowded early in the race.
How did the Sam perform on the rough roads with your tire choice and
mustache bars? I was amazed at how stable the Atlantis was in the rough
Force Field Fatty Rumpkins! Awesome. Way to thumb your nose at the Supple

Tony, you were not the only Riv in the Dirty Kanza this year. I was riding
my new Sage Green 650B Sam in the Half Pint and saw you pass me when we
first hit gravel. I also saw your Atlantis outside the theatre Friday
night and had to take a pic since I figured the Rivs would be few and far

Congrats! Knowing through friends how tough that course is, I'm extremely
impressed. Glad to know the Atlantis is perfect for that type of riding.
Did one (Westside Dirty Benjamin) on a Fargo with 2.1 inch tires and my
hands were numb for days.
Am totally in awe of your accomplishments.

Fantastic! You are right, dirt roads are far more relaxing.

This photo was taken at the top of a very steep climb. The gravel looks
pretty tame in the pic, but the slope I had just climbed was covered with
huge slabs of rock that I had to go over instead of picking a line through.
Ride with GPS list 3800' of elevation for the Half Pint, but my Garmin
Riv's look so good when they get dirty.

Very cool! I think a tubeless setup would be ideal for gravel rides.

Chris,
I would guestimate 25% of the bikes had MTB bars. Most of the bicycles
were 'cross bikes and Salsa Vaya, Fargo, or Warbird. There were several
x-country type MTB, some hybrids, a few fat bikes, off-road tandems, and
regular road bikes.
Jim M.,
A lot of the serious gravel racers that I

Congrats on a great ride. I'm a firm believer my Atlantis can do things I
shouldn't be doing anyway so is the perfect bike for my needs. Sounds
like yours is close to standard Riv spec you enjoyed the ride didn't
suffer for lack of equipment. Good to hear confirmation that lower
very cool Tony. Sounds like you had a good time. I would also suggest a
more supple tire like the Clement MSO next time, the Duremes are bombproof
but make the ride a little too rough I think.

That is just so awesome, Tony. I am quite the fan of the homegrown gravel
race/ride scene. I think it's a really healthy infusion of sensibility into
bike culture.

Living in MD, it is hard to imagine riding on 100 miles of gravel
road/trail.
I just don't know of anything like that around here.
That looks like some fun and beautiful scenery to ride through.
Congrats on the great accomplishment!
