Re: [RBW] Berthoud Saddles
B.17s stopped working for me a couple of years ago and I switched to Berthoud Aspins. I can't help with the "fore-aft hump" because my saddles never developed ridges like that, but for sure the Berthoud leather is much thicker and sturdier, and does not sag the way B.17s do. On 10/16/2016 03:42 PM, Don Compton wrote: I've been a Rivendell fan for years having owned 4 different bikes. I used B-17 saddles for years, but with wear, as the area under my sit bones would settle, the hump in the saddle( running for-aft) would cause extreme discomfort. I just had to give up on Brooks. I have been using a Secialized Phenom for about a year, but it's not so great on longer rides like I remember my Brooks in the early years of ownership. Has anyone with issues similar to mine switched over to a Berthoud saddle and felt some improvement? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. RE: [RBW] Berthoud Saddles
I have had a Berthoud touring saddle on my Homer for nearly 3 years. I think it's extremely comfortable with drop bars at approximately saddle height. As others have said, it does not stretch out like the non-Select Brooks saddles - in my experience, the Berthoud and the Brooks Select saddles break in similarly. One thing about the Berthouds - the proprietary 2.5 mm Allen head bolt/washer combos that attach the leather to the frame (the Berthoud equivalent of the Brooks rivets) can come unscrewed. They need to be checked periodically. Maybe a little Loctite would solve the problem, but I'm too lazy to try it, I just tighten them up from time to time. Also, as others have said, the Berthouds have a mount for a Berthoud Klik-Fix saddlebag connector, which is an extremely convenient and easy on/off way to mount a Berthoud saddlebag. I use it on my Hilsen, and really like it; bag comes off in a second with the push of one button on the mount. You can see the Klik-Fix mount between my Berthoud small saddlebag and the Berthoud saddle here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/9019678419/in/set-72157627914355388/ Finally, someone mentioned a concern about the load capacity if you hang a saddlebag from the loop-equivalents that are molded into the plastic frame. I have hung a pretty heavily loaded Medium Saddlesack off those loops, with no problems. The plastic is described as very high strength in Berthoud's marketing materials (for what that's worth). Oh, and at least to my taste, the Berthoud saddles are gorgeous. Re: [RBW] Berthoud Saddles
The Lovely Bicycle blog has a few articles about Berthoud saddles. Here's one. http://lovelybike.blogspot.com/2011/01/gilles-berthoud-saddles-something.html?m=1 I considered, but did not try the less expensive Berthoud Menthe, and a model from Rivet before ordering and being very pleased with a Brooks Cambium. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
