I’ve also read where some folks keep a small piece of rigid foam in their bike
bag to wedge between tire and fender to equalize the “pressure” exerted on the
fender by the 1Up bar. Quotes around “pressure” because you don’t need that
much...certainly not enough to damage a fender. Nice idea, but I never had to
use it.

2020-01-02 Thread Howard Hatten
I use a 3 place 1 up and I wouldn’t worry about the weight capacity. It’s very
stout. I carry an ebike, Cheviot, and an Atlantis, all with fenders. The
Cheviot is my only bike with metal fenders. I adjusted that foam fender piece
so it meets the fender just above the fender stay. I’ve had no problems. The
front wheel isn’t in play so no foam needed.
I was previously using a Saris and I liked it but I changed to the 1 up because
I didn’t like moving the wheel troughs around to adjust for different bikes.
The 1 up also let’s me adjust to the number of bikes I’ll be carrying.

I am not totally familiar with the 1up system, but speaking about physics,
hitch mounts and multi-bike racks in general.

Theoretically, if capacity is 4, 50lb bikes then max load is 200lbs. The
problem with one bike over 50lbs would likely be where it's located on the
rack. Place the heaviest bike(s) in closer to the hitch/mounting point and then
then progressively lighter bikes, the last bike should be the lightest. Placing
them in the opposite order would likely cause problems regardless of individual
or total weight.
Another solution would be remove the battery from the Ebike while transporting,
that's easily 10 pounds.
Honestly, doing both is probably a good idea.

Um...well, *Sparky *should be able to whir there on it's own, or, it can go
on a car top rack, so you really only need a 3-bike hitch mount rack! Hey,
thinkin' outside the box here, only because I want you to experience the
relative nirvana that is the 1Up system. Do you take 4 bikes more often
than 1, 2, or 3? And how often does Sparky come along when you use a rack?

Sounds like it's a mute point for you now, but for others reading, many
people have tried and liked the 1Up fender cushions, so I guess it's
personal taste. I suppose if you had really weak fender struts, or struts
that aren't tightened properly, that might be a problem. But I know
first-hand that SKS fenders and struts are fine with the fender cushions
... and they're probably the 'weakest', compared to Honjo or VO or Berthoud
fender struts.

Leah,
1up makes a “Fender Cushion”, which is a piece of cylindrical foam, wrapped in
a soft material which attaches with Velcro. The Fender Cushion wraps around the
little bars that ordinarily press into your tire. Works fine, though you
could make these things yourself with foam pipe insulation for a fraction of
the $13 they charge.

I am sitting in an airport, waiting to leave snow country and land in Nevada,

don’t have a listed wheelbase, and I hadn’t thought a thing about it until I
tried to put it on my Saris Freedom bike rack. It’s too long.

If your bike’s wheelbase is over 48 inches (and if the correct measuring is hub
to hub, it is) then you need to buy a $99 longer bar to haul your bike. The
bike somehow fits on my old Hollywood 2 bike rack. I think this is worth
considering if you want to bring your bike on public transportation or drive it
somewhere and ride it. I road trip up north every summer and will absolutely
have to replace the bar if I want to take my Clem. I never considered my bike
could be too long for my rack; I’m supposing plenty of other folks might not
have, either.

So, Happy New Year. You’re getting a new rack!

2019-12-31 Thread masmojo
I don't remember who posted the link to the new PDW Beast fenders, but I'd been
contemplating fenders for my Clementine and as soon as I saw them I knew they
were the hot ticket for me. Ordered them & they came a few days ago. Tried to
mount them up on Sunday, but I was promptly aware that my brake situation (low
profile XTR cantilevers) wasn't going to work! :-(

What to do!?

I briefly considered V brakes, but that would involve switching levers as well
and I dig my levers so that left me with a dilemma.

I got some Paul MiniMotos a while back in a trade, they won't really work on
the Clementine either, but as chance would have it I am on the verge of a major
refresh of my Atlantis; it currently has Paul touring Canti's on it and I
believe those will be fine on the Clementine. So I will rotate those on the
Clementine & put the MiniMoto's on the Atlantis. If this works as planned I'll
be quite chuffed as it will effectively be an upgrade on all fronts. 

Hopefully, a positive report to follow. 

LOVE IT!

You've achieved bike sartorial elegance! It looks so put together - the
black of the saddle, grips AND the Randi Jo bag. Love the copper bits,
it's additional jewelry.

Yes, this definitely works. It still has a "shades" vibe as the lighter blue
frame fades down to the darker blue bags; then black grips, saddle and tires.
It's perfect!

Yes, indeed. Kinda reminds me of the story about George Gershwin who
supposedly asked for lessons from the likes of French composer Maurice
Ravel, who (somewhat afraid that learning to compose in that classical
style would ruin Gershwin's natural innovative talent in the more modern,
progressive style) was said to have remarked, "Why should you be a
second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?"

Thanks, George, that’s kind. ❤️

No one was more disappointed in me than my high school English teacher when I
arrived at my university and checked the box “nursing major.”

I do enjoy writing, and maybe I should have found a way to get paid for it, but
nursing has been really rewarding, too. I’ve been there for a lot of people’s
worst days, held a lot of hands, and stopped a lot of bleeding. And laughed -
you can laugh with people in the most unlikely of circumstances. Nursing was
terribly satisfying, unbelievably difficult and, man, it was fun.

I don’t have any qualifications on paper for a writing job now, so I’ll just do
amateur work for free about the Clems in our lives. I plan to get a Cheviot
after the redesign, so I’m sure I’ll have a fair amount to say about that bike
in the near future, too. 

Ian, it fits! I’m not sure it didn’t fit me before; I just like those bars
high and close. I don’t want to reach out for my bars, and I want NO weight on

maxed out on my Saris rack. Not sure I would dare make it work for my
cross-country trip in the summer. We’ll see.

Thank you (and to Joe) for the compliments about my review. Sadly, Riv doesn’t

they know how wrong they were when they named the color “RBW blue”. 

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-02 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Today Ryan’s grips arrived and as fate would have it, only one of the grips
fit. Also, the brown just didn’t look as good as the black on the Clem and
honestly, I am done fighting it. This bike WANTS to have black, and though I’m
eternally a fan of rich, warm, honey tones I’m done arguing with it. This bike
is MALE. I was going to call it a Clementine but it’s a Clem. It’s some heroic
thing whisking me away to places in its capable, comfortable way. It’s
agreeable but it doesn’t want to be bossed. So, it’s getting a black saddle
with copper rivets and we’ll see how it takes to THAT.

I got to do my first commute with the new stem and fenders today. How can I use
words for this? The ride is...velvety. Yes, that’s the word. Smooth and lovely
and quiet. Velvety and also...directed. It’s easy to imagine with those
rippled, wavy fenders that the Clem is a ship set sail; it’s course is marked
and it won’t be deterred. This Clem has places to take you; you want to keep
pedaling; slowing and waiting up for the boys was unnatural. “Let’s go, I can
get you there.” When you get your rhythm on this bike you never want to use
your brakes again. My Clem is not a tame thing; it has its own opinions and
it’s a bit of an enigma. I’m still learning to trust it. I go slower down the
hills and don’t turn corners are tightly as I normally do. That will come in
time. Folks were asking about climbing hills on these new Rivs. I don’t have
any trouble standing and mashing up the hill home, and I only hang onto the
grips. I feel like I sit up higher on this bike. I feel like its wheels are
bigger - they aren’t. Shifting is nearly flawless but I did manage to mess that
up severely in a one-sided pretend race uphill with a roadie yesterday. (That’s
another story.) I ended up with chain suck bad enough that I did the walk of
shame for a long time before I managed to wrestle that chain free. But, if you
don’t count that, the bike is flawless!

I wish you all a blue-green-shot-through-with-glimmer-like-sunlight-on-seawater
Clem. Maybe yours would let you have the honey and copper saddle you prefer.
Mine is too strong-willed for that.
Leah

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-02 Thread DHans
When I had a bike with Bosco Bars I had to torque the stem bar connection
pretty tight not to get slippage when I stood up to pedal if I was gripping
near the end of the bars. There is so much leverage with that bar. On a
future Clem build I would seriously consider the Bullmoose stem combo bar.

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-02 Thread Patrick Moore
One day I must try one. It would be nice to have a bike that is comfortable
for casual rides (I realize that they are comfortable for more than that,
but this is the niche I'd want it for, as well as the following), taking
the dog for a run, hauling groceries, and with knobby tires for riding
bosque trails, and for more technical stuff than I feel comfortable with
using drop bars (I realize too that the Susie and Gus and so forth are not
designed for technical stuff, but an upright position will be better than
inclined over narrow -- and I like narrow and hate wide -- drop bars).
Although I prefer a road bike position for most on and off pavement riding,
there are times when a road position just isn't the most suitable one.

In fact, what made me think of Clems and kin was our recent snow. I'd like
a bike I can ride in the stuff on the rare occasions we get enough of it to
make a difference. No bike I own is suitable -- last one was that '96
Bontrager Race Lite, and that had too high a bb and felt awkwardly "tippy."

Again, good to know, and thanks. So a long top tube (I guess?) and bars
designed for forward as well as rearward hand positions are some of the

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Good to know. I've ridden bikes with "tourist" bars -- Raleigh Sports, road
bikes converted to sweep-back bars, rod braked roadsters, very briefly, an
omafiets -- that were short enough forward of the bottom bracket (taking
top tube and available hand positions on the bar) to make standing awkward;
you felt as though you were going to fall over the bar; though slack seat
tube angles did allow you to get a sufficient torso to hip angle for
mashing.

I guess -- correct me if I'm wrong? -- that these Riv models are designed
for this precisely by having long top tubes?

"Paean" and such: Decades of vast and undisciplined reading.

Well Patrick I ordered a Susie and I stand and mash all the time up
steep hills here. I'll likely use Billie bars as they offer some for/aft
hand positions and the curves are usable, especially standing while
climbing, like the Albatross. It's a frame Patrick, you can set it up and
ride it any way you like. A swept back bar does mean "sit up and beg while
twiddling over the pedals" ... ahahahahahahaha ! That's just silly
Just because you see some photos or some people riding like that doesn't
mean you have to . they're not Zombies waiting to bite you so you turn
into one of them and ride like that.

The longer top tubes of the Susie/New-Clems actually lend themselves to
riding as stretched out as you like, depending on bar and stem of course!

2019-12-01 Thread DHans
I agree Joe it is all a matter of perspective. And, the older I get the less
concern I have for how a bike looks especially as compared to the “typical”
bike. Comfort is king for me! I’ll post a new bike day Leah as soon as I can
find an L model in 52. My current ride is pretty sweet and I’d post a pic but
can’t figure how.

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-01 Thread Joe Bernard
Patrick, my 'standing and grinding' experience on Clems is limited by my
arthritic wrist, but I did a lot of it on a demo 52 H a couple (or three) years
ago on a Riv Ride on Mt. Diablo trails (they're steep!). The only limitation I
was aware of was standin while gripping the ends of the Bosco Bar, which you
wouldn't do. I reached forward to the curves for that, and any mtb-ish bar on a
Clem or Gus would be fine for that kind of riding.

I rode a Susie around the building at RBW that had a prototype Bosco Bullmoose
with less reach and more flare, I think that bike would be a great
stand-and-climber. Really the long-stay limitation for these frames is popping
the front wheel up, there's nothing to sabotage standing.

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-12-01 Thread Leah Peterson
Patrick, thanks! I had to look up the word paean, but what a good word to add
to the vocabulary! Where *did* you encounter it?

Oh, stems. I really went into this knowing less than nothing about them. When I
was first diagnosing the fit problem of the bike I was advised to get “a
shorter stem” which just about sent me into orbit because I thought that meant
the bars would be lowered. I like ‘em high!

About climbing and mashing. I am not a dirt road rider, but I am a
very-steep-hill rider. I will often stay in my hard gear and stand and mash
pedals. I do this *on purpose* because I want the extra workout. I have found
it somehow gives me an arm workout as I am pulling up hard on the bars. I’m
sure this is wrong. I’m sure this is bad form... I don’t care. Anyway, I don’t
notice that it’s uncomfortable, and I have my Bosco bars at max height. I also
find if I want to use the granny, I can also stay comfortably seated and climb
the hill from my saddle. It all works great.

that "normal" bikes look short and weird to me. "Why are you sitting right on

Thanks, Doug. This bike has really endeared itself to me. I love what it can do
(haul it all, total comfort, luxurious ride) and that it is also an unlikely
beauty. I do think it looks a little long and can see how that turns some folks
off to it, but I think if you only paid attention to the ride you’d love it. My
initial complaint was that I didn’t want the bars so far from me, but most

2019-11-30 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Roberta: I am no decorator for sure, but this bike is 朗 and makes it easy! Who
would ever think a Clem would give a Betty any trouble in a beauty contest, but
here we are. 浪

Joe, agree that black fenders weren’t right. They would have given the bike a
polished look, I’m sure, but when someone said the paint chips off I knew I
wanted silver. I only want to have fenders mounted once!

Forearms - I noticed because I was looking at them hopefully, knowing he was
gonna have to manhandle the mashed fenders!

Also, I forgot to mention I installed a 50 mm stem (yes, me!) to bring those
bars closer than the 90 was able. The weather has been stormy in our desert so
I really haven’t gotten to test out the feel. But it has to be right because
I’m out of options.

Abcyclehank and I are in the midst of a grip swap; he’s sending his brown/black
Ergons and I’m sending him my black ones. Then we’ll have some harmony with
that Select saddle, I hope. I tried the royal B17 but it wasn’t quite right.
Still may swap it for a different color.

But so happy with the bike’s look now. Can’t wait to ride it tot he boys’
school next week. Hope the weather clears up.

Thanks for making this so fun!

It’s tough to tell, I agree. Well, maybe bending it back was the wrong thing to
do? I don’t know. I hope the “master mechanic” at REI knows about fenders and
is as particular as we folks on this List are.

I hate to admit this, but I ordered these fenders from Amazon. I needed them to
get here fast so I could make my upcoming fender appt at REI. Of course Amazon
had the fastest shipping and would get it here in time. Well, we see how that
worked out!

I just want the bike to be finished and finally be mine. I’ve been waiting to
deck it out in Christmas lights until the work was done, but time is slipping
away. Maybe I should just put on my lights and worry about fenders after
Christmas. Or make these fenders work. Why don’t any of you live in Vegas?! We
would have this decided by now!

Mark - that expression is funny. I took it out of the usual pop culture context
though. Also, it is sort of comforting to my selfish heart that you are *also*
having bike woes. 藍

I’m kidding. Sort of. 

Hmm, it’s tough to really tell but it does look narrower in the picture

The other tricky part is as you bend the fender narrower or wider it changes
the overall radius as it relates to the wheel.

(That’s how a “pro” installer gets the fender line perfect)

Sorry this is causing stress, I’ve been there. sometimes we have to remember

It’s been one thing after another. I didn’t update this post yet, but I managed
to install my new stem a few days ago. I was so proud of myself for actually
accomplishing this very easy task, but when I went for a test ride, I felt like
the stem was no different. I looked more closely at the packaging. They sent me
the exact stem I already had (90) though I ordered a much shorter one (60).
Now today my fenders arrived damaged.

But the true tragedy? I can’t deck out my bike in Christmas lights until the
fenders and stem are installed.

I’m not crying you’re crying.

Re: [RBW] There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-11-19 Thread Leah Peterson
Ian has asked a very fair question, and I’m happy to answer - I am an open
book, ask away!

Why does Leah have a perfectly fitted Clementine but plans to sell it in favor
of a less well-fitted Clem L?

Because:
1. Leah is not immune to beautiful details.
2. Leah is a minimalist.

The Clementine fell into my lap after my mother in law moved to a nursing home.
The bike had sat unridden in her garage for over a year. I bought my Betty Foy
at the end of its production, not knowing a new longer-wheelbase generation of
Rivs was in the works. I missed the Cheviot by a couple of months. While I
adore the color scheme of the Betty, I’ve always wanted room for fatter tires
and to know what all the fuss was about long chainstays. These were things the
Clementine had, and I was really fortunate to get to bring that bike home.
Turns out, Rivs new philosophies live up to the hype. That Clementine was
instantly more comfortable than my Betty, though admittedly, heavier.

But, the Clementine had no cream accents, was a rather loud aqua color, and had
an ugly seat lug (I’m sorry, but that’s what I think). I had some frustrating
recurring shifting issues with the bike, and I think that has something to do
with space between the frame and derailleur (someone here speaks this language)
that the newer Clems have fixed.

The new Clem L fell into my lap because Roberta, a kind and thoughtful soul,
was looking for a Clem L for my sister, and she stumbled upon this insanely
good deal out of New York. For the price, it was just dumb not to buy it. I
couldn’t believe anyone would sell this bike after 2 weeks of owning it, and at
such a great price. I planned to either give it to one of my two sons when he
gets big enough, or to sell it later. But when it arrived, it was just so
beautiful. Cream accents! I’ve never had them! That metallic blue will make you
swoon, though you need to see it with your own eyes to believe it. I described
it as a blue-green shot through with glimmer, like sunlight in seawater, and I
stand by that. Forget about the photos you’ve seen online, they’re trash. This
bike is a much lovelier and upgraded Clementine. It’s really hard to say no to
the beauty that the Clem L brings. I can live with making some adjustments to
fit because I think my body will get used to the bike and eventually prefer it.
So, I’m keeping it.

I am going to sell the Clementine because I don’t need two of the same bike. We
move fairly frequently and I like to travel through life light. I dislike
clutter and I am wary of just ‘having things’ - I need to use them or they
gotta go. I only want two bikes, a step through and a mixte - the two best
bikes Rivendell makes. It’s bad enough that the old Clem H is sitting, waiting
for a Peterson boy to grow tall enough to ride it, but I’m not having TWO bikes
sitting in exile. So, the Clementine will brighten someone else’s life soon,
and she’s a joy-bringer for certain.

Thanks for the help on fit - I’ll be anxious to read it if we can track it down.
Best,
Leah
