Like you, I'm unaware of an inverter that functions as grid
tied/interactive, to which a battery bank can be added later to the same
product.
My guess is that Sunny Boy(s) would be installed first, followed by
Sunny Island(s) if battery backup is wanted later.

Hi All,
I seem to remember that you can connect the XW inverters with 120v and they
will battery charge.
Anybody know for sure?
thanks,

Never heard of anything like that...a solar urban myth perhaps? At least

I just got off the phone with Sandra Herrera, now with Xantrex. The
subject we spoke of was charging an XW with 3 phase 120 phase angle. The
answer to that scenario is no. One option she mentioned was charging with
120 VAC, so I guess the answer to your question is yes.
BTW, I sent
It can be done using AC coupling with the battery bank and battery based
inverter added later.

When I asked tech support about this in order to use a 2000i generator for
backup, the answer was 240 only.

Gary,
Sorry to interject on top of your previous reference to AC coupling. I had not
read your post before replying. I am not aware of any way to use a single

Hello Jay,
If the XW is already configured as a single phase 120V, then it will
connect to a 120V generator. But if the XW is configured as 120/240V, then
a single phase 120V generator will not work.

Hi Sandra,
Where does it tell me in the manual I can/how to do this?
And will this allow full power or 1/2 power?
thanks,

Jay,
You need to download Addendum to the Install Manual 976-0222-01-01 rev B and
perform the rewriting to 120Vac and install new software using the gateway or
System Configuration Tool using 120v software.
Let me know if you these off list and I can send them to you.
Thank you,

Wrenches,
I'm thinking out loud here: Could the new XW MPPT 80 600 be tied to the PV
input side of a grid tie inverter simultaneously? I'm looking for a simple way
to add a small battery and inverter to an existing grid tie for backup. I
imagine the MPPT circuits on each device would conflict.
The Heart Transverter can be grid-tied with or without a battery, but it is not
through UL yet.
