BTW, I can ping my machine from my wifes, (if that helps

So you can ping your machine from your wife's, but you cannot ping the
wife's from yours.
Sounds like a subnet mask issue, or ICMP filtering. Check that the
subnet masks on both machines match, and try service iptables stop.

Whenever I try to do somthing like tar the /var/www/html dir I get a
sshh sshh sshh noise (like a scraping sound) and the whole system
freezes and I have to cut the power manually.

for different versions of RedHat. Best to look in the errata and make
sure to download the right ones.

I cannot seem to get GIMP 1.3.17 to 'see' my sharefont/freefont
packages. They show up fine in 'chkfontpath' but when I run GIMP I only
have about 25 fonts available.
I don't know how else to check if X is getting them but chkfontpath

per se, you just need to load GPhoto or gtkam or whatever it's called

Just upgraded from 7.3 to 8.0
X won't start so I went and re 'make'ed the nvidia kernel.
It's telling me that the nvidia kernel was made with gcc2 compiler but
the kernel I'm running was made with version 3.
Any clues as to what to do?
