I've just installed a new modem as I think my previous PPP setup
problems were at least partly caused by a faulty modem. New one is a
USR Sportster 56k flash external plugged onto /dev/cua1 (COM2) and seems
to behave fine under minicom (responds to commands, dials etc.).

I hope you don't mind me asking... do you find that
there is a significant delay in minicom to initialise
your modem.
Operation of the modem on my system seems to take ages?
