Skipp, I may be able to help. I honestly don't think mounting that style antenna close to metal was your main problem unless there is some loose metal already in the area of the antenna. Anything loose can cause this intermod problem. This is basically the same problem you have with I guess

SD, Did not see this until after I wrote my post on this same problem. This is a well known problem, the bottom connection should be something better than a set screw if you ask me. This is why DB went to spot welded dipoles but you are correct, the problem still exists with the Bi-metal

Paul Skipp, I just sent a brand new DB224 up to 310 ft. today and did the hardware check beforehand. Three of the dipole machine screws had bottom nuts (the first threaded onto the screw) that were not snug and another with a top nut (attaching the harness) that was barely finger tight.
