Anything from a small low powered repeater in a box to a cross banded dual/multi band radio works pretty well. Small low powered repeaters can be made from small radios (even portables) up to commercial vehicle systems like the Pyramid Radio Equipment. I'm sure there will be lots of answers

I was just thinking about using my old DR-570 for a cross band repeater project. (it's the one with the repeat switch on the top). At www.mods.dk there is a mod for expander rf and cross band repeater mod that says: 6. Remove the two pin connector to disable audio bleed in repeater mode.

Nick, Many states/regions have an SNP, or test pair, or nonprotected pair of UHF frequencies for conceptual studies, experimenting, etc. If your area has such a pair then that would be a natural for your mobile repeater. That being said, please pay attention to the advice already given

If you jump up to the 902 band, there is an established Itinerant Repeater Pair in SERA Land and some other states which are patterned after SERA's Bandplan... In many of those areas 927.4875/902.4875 is available for Mobile or Portable Repeater OperationsUnspecified locations and tones..
