I had a set of home brew copper pipe duplexers that used regular steel threaded rod for the plunger rods. After the frustration of not being able to keep them tuned, I took them apart and put two nuts above the plunger and two nuts below the plunger on the threaded rod. I tightened these

I agree GMRS is the way to go for family communication, see if there are any grms licensed repeaters in your area and join the group of users after you get your license for gmrs. or see if your xyl will go to one of the weekend classes like Gordon west's to get her license and she can share
