Back in the sixties, I worked for a background music provider. He
used dual coil speakers for his customer installations.

Reason for the dual coil was:

Voice coil one: was for the music which the individual area
user could control the music level.

Voice coil two: was for the public address system which the
area user was not able to control.

In the 2-way radio application, four separate radios could use the
 same speaker.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Mobile Repeaters?

2005-01-01 Thread Dakota Summerhawk

So from what I gather from all that replied, and I thank you from the bottom
of my heart BTW for the multitude of information. So a Maxtrac one VHF and
UHF will do the trick? I was looking at some of the setups on eBay that have
two mobile radios (mostly Motorola) with a duplexer hooking the two radios
together. Does there not have to be some sort of controller for it to work
as well? Has anyone used this sort of setup and had it work the way it
should? I have done some research and gotten lost in the shuffle of info on
the net hence why I joined this list to get a better understanding of what
it takes for repeaters to work but to also have the space I need to be able
to have the van used as a command post as well.
Thanks for all the help and keep the emails coming!

The G.E. MVPs will do 30 watts on 2 meters 25 on 440. It'd be nice
if they did a bit more but I've never had a problem with inadequate TX
 range on my systems.

If you must have 50/35 watts you'll need to go with something bigger,
or sacrifice performance. No one will notice 1 or 2 dB less TX power.

I forgot to mention previously that I have a VHF MVP configured as a
wide-split 2 meter repeater. The entire package fits in a backpack
is hand-carryable by a single person (including antenna). Nice when

Anyone had experience with mixing the speaker output of 2 radios,

I did that and more in a Saturn - feeding the right side of a dual-

radio plus a 220 radio and the car radio into the car's right
speaker, and
the left side of the dual-band plus the car radio into the car's
left
speaker. It worked great. I could use everything at once, and
the
fidelity of the ham equipment through the car speakers was good.
(I
actually used a 30 watt stereo amplifier to obtain enough audio
from the
ham rigs to drive the car speakers through blocking resistors,
complicating
 the installation some.

I've attached a j-peg of the schematic, if this list will accept
j-pegs. The schematic doesn't have component values, I think the
resistors
were 20 ohm, 10 watt, and the capacitors were 1000 uF, 50 volt.

Basically I put a blocking resistor on each side of each speaker
wire from
each rig (actually from the output of the stereo amp). I put a
capacitor
on each wire from the car speaker (4 total, 2 left and 2 right) to
block
the DC that this audio system put on the speaker wires from
getting to the
 ham rigs.

What did you use to block the AC..(Audio) from feeding back into the
other radio?...

That's the trouble with most of these post, and all of them using
transformers. You are still driving audio back into the other output
stage. That will sooner or later distroy the audio output PA !!!
I've replaced many expensive PA Moduls becaue someone pulled this
number. The only way to do it right is to load each`output with a
resistor, AC couple the audio (using caps on both sides of the
outputs) into a mixer circuit and then amplify the whole thing.

There was a little interaction between the radios, with volume
dropping
just a little when the second radio is turned on. I found that
acceptable. But an active mixer is certainly a more elegant way
to go.

 True!

I can just imagine what a 100Hz tone would sound
like through a 6x9 :)

Probably just as annoying as being having an Accura
with dual 500w subwoofer amps in the right lane, you
in the center lane with your left window open, and hear
and watch the rear license plate on the '67 El Camino
in lane #1 rattle in step with the base notes..

And no, I'm not kidding. If it's too loud, you're too old
seems to be the mantra of the day.

Me, I just want to preserve my ears so I can hear
 my grandchildren.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: [Motorola] MSR2000 PA Transistors

2005-01-01 Thread Eric Lemmon

Ken,

The M1134 PA transistors, AKA 4884411L34, are identical to the M9625,
which are AKA 480086925. These are no longer available from Motorola.
However, the M1134 can be replaced by the 2N6097 or the ECG356.

Thats what I wanted to do, but this has to be a discrete solution.
The radios have BTL output.

Try using a couple of caps to isolate the voltage on the lines -
take both speaker outputs to a mod transformer - IN on the secondaries,
and OUT on the primary - primary to the external speaker. Old push-
pull audio circuits in CB's are a great source for the mod transformer.
This isn't elegant, but it works...

What advantage would transformers have over
RC Coupling? Transformers tend to cost a
lot of money for higher spkr power levels.

[Repeater-Builder] Speaker Mixing with transformers

2005-01-01 Thread skipp025

Here's another method...

Radio Shack sells a 600:600 ohm transforer pretty
cheap. Pick up one for each radio used in the
circuit. You will need to follow the mixer circuit
with a small audio amplifier. As mentioned before,
amp kits are sold from MPJA, Altronics, Mark V
Electronics and others. Motorola makes/made a
12 watt amplified speaker that might be used.

Terminate each of the radio speaker outputs into
a 22 ohm 5 watt resistor. Parallel one each, the
primary of a 600 ohm transformer across each
resistor through a 10uF non polar cap. Done on
the primary side.

On the secondary of each transformer used, tie
one lead from each to a common ground or return
point.

Place a series 10K (typical) resistor in series
with each remaining transformer seconday hot
lead, tied to the trailing audio amplifier
input.

Doesn't get much simpler...

cheers,
skipp

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Mobile Repeaters?

2005-01-01 Thread JOHN MACKEY

Same story here!

About 2 years ago the transmitter for my FM commercial station (10KW) went
down VERY HARD!! My full-power backup was also dead due to completely
different problems. So I had to run the station on 75 watts from an exciter.

We received only a few phone calls complaining.

We have two translators, one heard our low power fine. The other was hearing
a different station when we were on low power.

It took me four days to get the main transmitter back on the air (including
replacing the 100 Amp AC 3 phase fuse box!!) The back up transmitter never
did come back to life and was recently parted out. It was a Collins made in
1968!

A few weeks ago, I accepted delivery on a new 10 KW Harris FM/IBOC Split level
system.

Years ago an FM broadcast station near here had their 5KW transmitter go
down. They quickly bypassed the PA and ran 10 watts. Grocery stores in a
40-mile radius subscribed to their SCA store music. Not one of them
experienced a problem - no complaints at all.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it ;-)

Not just 6x9s, but several sizes.

Remember, Google is your friend.

I plugged the string [dual voice coil OR dual coil speaker]
into google and got over 26,000 hits. Here's the jewels from
the first thirty:

http://www.vintagevibes.net/Speakers/DVC_speakers.htm

Here's a source of 6x9, 4x10 and 5x7 inch speakers at a decent price:
https://www.the-direct-source.com/product_info.php?products_id=492

This web page lists prices on the DVC speakers:
http://www.doubledparts.com/price_guide.htm

Here's a 6.5 round one, but it's high priced
http://www.ginelectronics.com/JA-Audio-dual-voice-coil-speakers.htm

I also found a 10 one but who needs a speaker that large in a vehicle?
(unless you're trying to rattle license plates two lanes away)
