Do you have the accompanying manual for the RSS (programming software)?

It's pretty easy - the options are found in the MODE menu... but I'm at
Dayton right now, and don't have access to the computer I usually use for
programming. Otherwise, I'd list a step-by-step to get into the menu.

  Yep, most manufactures market a voting portable in one shape or another.
Motorola Waris series, Some Icom, HYT, Tait and Vertex Standard (I developed
the Voting software for the VX-820 series).

  Voting and talk around are two completely separate things,
  Think of voting as scanning that selects the best (usually Strongest)
signal and forces the radio over to that channel, in this case the radio will
be looking at two frequencies (Repeater Output, AND base/mobile output) and
comparing them for best signal. obviously if two users are working closely in a
basement for instance, it ensures seamless switching of the users portables,
and eliminates untrained users selecting the wrong channel.
  Talk around or Talk around scanning just stops on the first channel with
valid carrier (Or noise).
  Done right, Voting is seamless and invisible to the user.

I wonder if this feature is offered here in the U.S.

Anyone know for sure? I spoke with a Kenwood/Harris dealer who has been in the
business for over 30 years and he's never heard of it. And I've never seen it
in any of the literature or ads offered by manufacturers.

[Repeater-Builder] Coupling cavities, cable length, and notch/bandpass configuration

2010-05-15 Thread spradio2000

Hello, I've been designing and building my own cavities, and experimenting to
find out what works best. The current project is a 70cm repeater, but we are
planning on a 2m repeater.

I've been strugling with cable lengths to connect the difrent cavities.

At the moment I use a system of two notches and a bandpass in both tx and rx
line.

I found coupling of notch cavities to work well if not 1/2 wave or increments
(3 notches at 1/4 wave give 1/2 wave between 1 and 3).
Bandpasses coupled at 1/4 wave seems to give a wide bandpass with a dip.

I used 1/4 wave pieces to split the antenna line into rx and tx.

What I tried today looks kind off like this.

  ,.. ,. ,.. ,.. RX
 /   \   /  \   /   \   /
1/4 |_\_/_ 1/4  _\_/_  1/4  _\_/_
||   |  |   |   |   |
ANT ---||   |  |   |   |   |
|| N |  | N |   |BP |
||   |  |   |   |   |
||___|  |___|   |___|
 \
 1/4  \-. ,. ,.. ,--- TX
 \   /  \   /   \   /
 _\_/_  1/4 _\_/_  1/4  _\_/_
 |   |  |   |   |   |
 |   |  |   |   |   |
 | N |  | N |   |BP |
 |   |  |   |   |   |
 |___|  |___|   |___|

This gives me some unwanted small dips near de passband.

My own design uses a length between 1/4 and 1/2 wave between the cavities, this
looks better after tuning with the coupling loops.

Before I continue with 2m cavities I'd like to know more about coupling
cavities and cable lengths. What is wise, and is the setup with 2x twoo notches
and one bandpass the best solution. I tried 2x tree notches. works nice but
requires major retuning when connected to the repeater.

I hope one has some good info, or knows where to find some.

Oh, all interconnecting cables are RG400 double shielded, silver and PTFE cable.

Regerads,

   Edwin

Did you calculate the distance to include connectors and velocity factor
of the coax? 1/4-wave between points is normal; it also tends to have a
transforming effect as well that helps with matching.

Another thought might be to aperture couple the cavities. Then you
won't have any cable or connector issues to deal with. The paging cans
use this to reduce losses and increase power handling capability.

What do you want to do with PICs?

The actual PICs can be had from Mouser or DigiKey. I bought a programmer
from Futurlec for ~$60.

I never saw any PIC-specific vendors at Dayton, though Byonics (APRS
trackers) is usually there as well as ICS (repeater controllers), their
products are PIC-based.

We're here at the Dayton Hamvention... and it's another great
weekend wrapping up. I've noticed a number MSR-2000 Units out
in the flea market... I'll try to remember to get their contact
information. A complete VHF MSR-2000 Repeater is/was priced
at $50 today and still no takers yet. Even had the large internal
VHF duplexer installed. UHF units are not as common but I
haven't been paying that close attention.

Bright sun today and an number of the Group Members here are
looking pretty lobster red. The brauts/brats are good but the
sodas are priced at $3 each, which I think is a bit much.

Great to meet a number of Group Members here... some of you
I wouldn't buy a car from but I think that also works in
reverse... not that I'd want to part with a precious 137,000

Surplus radio gear here like crazy... GE Rangers going for
$30 to $40, Maxtracs going for $40 (all bands), all kinds of
hand held radios and a lot of vintage land mobile (two-way)
radios are reappearing one more time.

Solar Panels are bringing in prime dollar and fairly few relative
to previous years.

The hard hat with top mounted mini tower and yagi beam guy is
