[Repeater-Builder] Re: Converting the Kenwood TKR-820 to use with D-STAR

2010-07-08 Thread Jonathan Naylor
Actually the dual-mode working with my software repeater controllers is already
here. GB3IN started full dual-mode operation at the beginning of the year, with
the mode being sensed automatically. The FM side is connected to EchoLink and
the D-Star side being connected to the Multi-Trust network.

Each repeater has a configurable mode hang time associated with it to stop mode
flipping too quickly.

Since all D-Star radios also do FM, there isn't usually a problem of us and
them.

[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Control Operator via Other-Than-Phone-Line

2010-07-08 Thread Mike Besemer (WM4B)
At our club meeting tonight a discussion came up regarding the cost of the
phone line to our 2-meter repeater system. Originally it was there for the
Autopatch, but has evolved to being primarily used for me to program the
controller (CAT-1000) and to control the system. (The autopatch is rarely
used, since everyone carries a cellphone now.)

Everyone understands that the phone line is needed for control and
programming, but we started toying with other ideas. Specifically, having
an Internet connection at the site seemed like it had a lot of potential,
but frankly I don't know why! It'd be nice to run an I-Gate from that
location (we already have an APRS weather node there), but it's not
essential. I could probably use it to monitor the site as well, but that's
not really much of a concern either.

So, the question is, how can we use Internet to control/program the
CAT-1000? We could get Internet at the site for about the same cost as the
phone, and if we could use it for repeater control/programming AND the other
things I mentioned, it'd be a better deal.

Can IRLP be used for control/programming? I'm not familiar with that system
whatsoever, but am always willing to learn.

[Repeater-Builder] VHF REPEATER USING DELTA or RANGR

2010-07-08 Thread tomnevue
Has anyone made a VHF repeater using 2 Delta or Rangr radios? Were the results
OK? Any unexpected problems?

Tom

Re: [Repeater-Builder] VHF REPEATER USING DELTA or RANGR

2010-07-08 Thread MCH
The RANGR was only spec'ed at 5% duty cycle and would not make a very
good repeater transmitter. I don't recall the specs on the Delta offhand.

You could get a Magic Jack and keep the same phone number and
everything. The only thing that would change is the bill.

Of course, this requires an internet connection. But, the cost of that
plus the MJ could be lower than what you are paying now.

 Tom

I use a pair of Low Band Rangers for repeater service and
they just keep going. I have a macro controlled timed fan on
the transmit unit, turn down the power to about 75 watts and
generally beat the snot out every one of them since the mid
1980's and they are still 100% operational .

The Low Band GE Ranger is one heck of a great radio. In most
sane applications you'd be hard pressed to kill one. Moving
a LB unit up onto 6 meters is a $%^^(* pain but it can
be done.
