So the give away here was the word TYPE, which by its presence, negated
any comfort that one could derive from concurrent use of the term
MIL-SPEC?

Yes. In fact, only those manufacturers who are listed in the QPL

specification are allowed to mark it in such a way as to lead the buyer to
assume that the cable is genuine Military Specification cable. Any cable
that does not meet the applicable specification must have the word TYPE
following the part number. Of course, the makers of counterfeit cable are
depending upon the ignorance and/or naïveté of potential buyers, who
 perhaps
may be clueless about coaxial cable quality variations.

A case in point: Several years ago, a local Ham who is known for pinching
pennies (aren't we all?) spread the word that he had found a source for
Genuine MIL-SPEC RG-213/U Coaxial Cable for an incredibly low price, if
bought in 1,000 foot spools. I challenged him to prove that it really was
genuine Mil-Spec cable, and he showed me a sample of the cable on which was
printed MIL-C-17 RG-213/U TYPE without any manufacturer's name or CAGE
code. I stripped off some jacket and noted that the shield braid was
minimal, and coverage was probably less than 40%- the dielectric was
 visible
through the gaps in the braid. I told him that he had been scammed, and he
said Look right here, it is stamped MIL-C-17 RG-213/U TYPE, and that means
it is genuine Mil-Spec cable! Yeah, as comedian Ron White often says, you
 can't fix stupid!

So does that mean that in order for a cable to be labeled RG-223 it must
 meet this mil-spec?

Apologies,

I have been busy rebuilding a 60 degree V6, Heathkit SB-220s, an IFR-1900,
several Icom 706s. Seems I'm always working on other peoples stuff and I
don't have so much time for my personal projects.

Finally got some stuff off the bench and maybe I can renew my efforts.

Cheap P25 repeater using mobile rigs (was: Re: [Repeater-Builder] New file uploaded to Repeater-Builder)

This has already been done in a number of places with various rigs.

The disadvantages are many, but the main one is in that the digital
signal is converted to analog and then back to digital, and the
resulting double-vocoded audio which has been put through two lossy
CODEC's will sound really bad.

We have a similar setup here on a VHF machine in Denver. It's
copyable, but the audio at the end-user radio will NOT be an accurate
representation of what was originally transmitted.

Comparing the Amateur P25 system that's double-VOCODed vs. a real P25
repeater is like night and day.

There's no such thing as a free lunch -- for P25 (or any other digital
real-time audio stream of bits) to sound as good as it can sound, you
have to stay digital at the repeater.

You should post information on your website or however you communicate
with your users that the system's audio will never quite sound right.
Otherwise, they may think that P25 always sounds that bad.

Other disadvantages are that the repeater won't pass Unit ID's
properly, and most of the features of P25 will be lost. Unit to unit
calling, etc. Anything included in the data stream beyond the audio
is lost.

It also won't be ID'ed legally without the assistance of the end-users
in that configuration unless you switch back to analog mode for ID's
under the watchful eye of an intelligent repeater controller.

(Putting MCW through the IMBE VOCODER sounds like the CW is coming
from underwater, but it's copyable if you have to go that route.)

It's a quick-and-dirty way to set up a P25 capable repeater, but it'd
be wise to start shopping for a digital-capable Quantar or similar
from any other manufacturer if you want P25.

That might be. I have never run any simulation on the circuit, but I
have built two of them and they work fine.

55dB of gain might be about right. The rectified DC is 3 to 4 volts
with an input (at that frequency) of 100mV or less.

Someone can clean up the filter design, if needed. I do not claim this
to be well engineered or an end-all circuit, just something that does
work. Tweaking of the resistor or capacitor values might improve things
on the simulation. I am not sure if the ringing would affect the
operation much, but it probably could be engineered to remove or limit
that, but I never saw any problem with the circuit from an operational
standpoint.

No schematic handy here. It was the stock squelch circuit in a mid-80's
vintage Hamtronics R144 or whatever repeater grade RX they were selling
at the time. The noise filter was a simple 2-pole BPF with a very high
Q. The op amp they used was the dedicated op amp within the MC3357 or
MC3359 IF amp/detector-on-a-chip. Nothing wrong with the op amp, just the
circuit design around it.

I would think ringing would be a problem with passive components Like
L/C filters. But it may exist in a low quality op-amp that is not
designed with a wide bandwidth.

In this case the op amp isn't the problem, it's the overall circuit.

I believe the LM324 series is only
rated for 12kHz of bandwidth, the TL084 is about 3MHz.

The unity gain BW of the LM324 is 1 MHz; the TL084 is 3 MHz. I wouldn't
use either one much above audio frequencies.

I am not even sure if I can simulate impulse noise. But in theory we
can write a software algorithim to look for a patterned pulse and
attempt to compenstate.

Any decent SPICE simulator should be able to give you the transient
response of your filter.

may be what you were working with. A transistor for hysterieses just
rases a number of suspicions. I learned to stop trusting built into IF
chip squelch systems when I worked on a Regency repeater many moons
ago.

Multisim 6 is far from decent. It crashes more then it run. Subsequent
versions are not any better. The entire Electronic workbench series is
suspect.

within the above:

A 9 pole high pass filter is the star of the squelch system.
Exhibiting a near brick wall response it is a Sallen-Key Chebyshev
filter with 0.8dB of ripple in the pass band. This will exhibit 10dB
of gain with a Fc of 6kHz as well as exhibiting an eyepoping -68dB of
rejection at 3500 Hz and -55dB at 4000.

Be careful with sharp skirts on your noise filter. I've seen very high Q
noise filters in squelch circuits cause some strange effects due to
ringing. The old Hamtronics squelch would tend to act tight in the
presence of impulse noise such as precipitation static or radar.

Check the transient response before finalizing your design.

Good thinking Bob, I will look in to it. Do you have a schematic or
the model number of the squelch you were working with?

A couple of friends in Erie were recently pulling their hair out with
a COR-2 by VHF engineering. That needed a serious redesign, not having
a pull-up resistor on the RX board was and the of the COR input
transistor not having a resistor in the base come to mind.

I would think ringing would be a problem with passive components Like

I should mention I have a preliminary schematic in the files section
as well should anyone care to offer suggestions or modifications.
