[Reportbug-maint] Bug#892867: please create reportbug@l.d.o

2018-03-13 Thread Sandro Tosi
Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

Hello,
we would like to ask for the creation of reportbug@l.d.o . this is to replace
the email we use as maintainer of reportbug in preparation for alioth deco.

I'm not sure i would like to share the current subscribers list on a public bug
report, but it may also be a good moment to "clean up" that list: this bug is
CC'ed to reportbug-maint@l.a.d.o and i'll send there an email once we migrate.

we would also very much like to keep the archive, but that goes back to Jun
2008, so the requirement of reviewing the archive for spam is quite heavy - any
chance you can lift that?

thanks,
Sandro (reportbug maint)

i was more thinking of tools external to debian, like scripts from
operators using those functions

are the changes to make the private in separate commits or among the
docstrings changes? the former would help in review the change

i like the idea of trying hard to avoid to ask questions to the users
so maybe we can do something like

* check if that version is coming from the debian-security repo
** if so, copy the relevant security team
** if not, ask the user

in neither case is acceptable to sys.exit() if you cant connect to the
internet: either you decide a default address for this case, or print
a warning message that you cant fetch the needed information and the
sec team wont be copied in the repo.

thanks both for working together on reaching consensus

sorry but did you even actually test your patch? this is the CC list:

X-Debbugs-Cc: mo...@debian.org, t, e, a, m, @, s, e, c, u, r, i, t, y,

this wont work i guess; just use listcc += as in the rest of the code?

the point is that in offline mode, it should *not* use any network
(you know, like if you are offline) and thus default to not copy the
security team and skip the entire branch, smth like "if pkgversion and
not options.offline"

please support the --timeout cli option and fail gracefully if you
cant contact security.d.o (sys.exit if you cant reach it is extremely
rude to users!) by not copying the security team.

Did you check Nis suggestion at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=878088#199 to check
apt-cache output (possibly via python3-apt) to see if that version is
coming from the updates stream? since it's on the table and you didnt
comment on it yet, i wanted to point it out.

point releases usually include all the security updates from the
previous point release, so they would come from the "main" repo and
not the security one (also apt-cache policy would require to have the
security.d.o source, which is not necessarily the case on every single
machine)

i did a quick check on the number of bugs reported in a week, and over
the 600+ bugs filed, less than 30 where for a stable release (either
stretch or previous ones); i think you may also clarify that prompt,
as i suspect users will get rather confused "how am i supposed to know
if this is a security update? i just apt-get upgrade the system and

[Reportbug-maint] Bug#878088: Bug#878088: reportbug: please inform security and lts teams about security update regressions

2017-12-28 Thread Sandro Tosi
Hello everyone,
let me first apologize for the long time with no input from the
reportbug maints.

i had a look a the patch and.. i'm not really happy :( it looks like
the version format is the same for both security updates and stable
updates: this means for every bug report (on a stable release against
an updated package) the user will get a prompt if this is a regression
due to a security update, and they may have no clue because all they
did is dist-upgrading.

i'm not super-excited about making a synchronous call to
distributions.json but let's say i can live with that (did you try
your patch with the -O/--offline mode?) is there a way s-t.d.o can get
queried at the same time to know if the current package/version comes
from the secteam/lts or is coming from the pkg maintainer as a normal
stable update?

could you make it so that distributions.json contains directly the
email address to use? do you really need the indirection of d.json ->
support + support -> actual email (hardcoded in code)?

the patches look great! we have no problem shelling out, and you're

[Reportbug-maint] Bug#885330: Bug#885330: reportbug: Reportbug gui not started

2017-12-26 Thread Sandro Tosi
> I tried to start reportbugi from ui (xfce) but unfortunatelly it doesn't

did you install all the packages reportbug suggests, as specified in
the doc (/usr/share/doc/reportbug/README.Users.gz)?

```
How to Use New GTK+ User Interface
==
If you tried to set the new GTK+ UI (named in reportbug as gtk2 ui)
and it fails to start (falling back to text mode, hopefully), chances
are that you are missing some of the packages listed as Suggests, in
particular:
- python3-gi
- python3-gi-cairo
- gir1.2-gtk-3.0
- gir1.2-vte-2.91
traceroute doesnt understand a URI, you need to pass only the hostname:
$ ping sandrotosi.me
PING sandrotosi.me (160.153.42.193): 56 data bytes
can you still replicate it with an updated system (so apt-get update +
upgrade + dist-upgrade)? i tried just now and running
DISPLAY= reportbug emacs
progresses just fine in a non-graphical env
what is the value of DISPLAY in your env?
in what environment are you running reportbug? is it text-only while
all good, just checking :)
we may also need to look at the test suite (`make tests`), some of
those are broken after 7.1.6 (and in general let's try to keep that in
sync with new code and assess that these new bugs are fixed in the
testsuite)
i'm gonna merge & upload this patch and several other soon!
thanks (as always) for the patch! I'm still uncertain on the future of
the GTK+ UI: currently there is no one that willing to properly
maintain that UI; probably we should just split it into a separate
binary *and* source package and fine a way to provide UIs as plugin,
installable in a dir reportbug can scan and eventually enable them
In principle it makes sense to me, but given this is RT-land, i'd
rather them ack it explicitly (added in CC)
Release team: do you want to add a `stretch-pu` at the same time, so
that we'll have a reportbug in stretch with that option too? (or is it
too early?)
i dont know what that is, but it seems a broken installation:
reinstall reportbug and check the documentation for the missing deps
(which are anyway listed in Suggests)
what happens if you run
the discussion about where nn@b.d.o should be delivered to (the
submitted in automatic, all that contributed to the bug, as is) has
been going on for years. For example: how can you be certain that the
submitter actually cares about the discussion of the bug and it was
not just a "report and forget" (feel free to search d-devel archives
for this very same argument).
it sounds like it should be addressed in the BTS itself than reportbug
i still think that if the reported is not able to understand the
relatively simple english language of the UI, then it's unlikely they
possess the right knowledge of the language to properly report a bug
report understandable by the maintainer and so it's more appropriate
to look for help in language-specific support channels (ml, irc, etc)
this info alone is practically useless - can you run reportbug
command line, and the package you're trying to report a bug to)?
that;s what is it: a bug in python3, so reassigning + affecting accordingly
because UIs need to interact with URLs, and those are managed by the
urlutils module, which import webbrowser. introducing conditional
(i'm also not sure if there are limits to the line length in an email,
but i'll look it up in the SMTP docs)
Thanks for your patch, but in the meantime reportbug has migrated to
python3 (as for v7.0.0, latest v7.1.1) - could you verify if your fix
is still required in the new version and if so port the patch to it?
git repo url for reference:
this has been reported already at 848692 and it's due to a punctuation
character in the name (`-` in your case), if you remove that (it is
just a workaround for now) you can start using reportbug again
that'd be true, but i suspect is more a local configuration issue (of
some sort) - can you try on a clean/brand new chroot? maybe it's your
locale (even if en_US.UTF8 is the one i would have suggested to use)
OMG thanks a lot Simon! I just merged all your patches and will
release reportbug soon with them!
will you be interested in keep having a look at the GTK+ interface in
reportbug? if you are, here is a handy link to the current bugs in the
bts for it:
hm it's not really the case we are looking for new maintainers: most
of those patches are just bugs wrongly tagged, or sometihng that could
not be merged anyway.
well, as you might guess, asking right now for a 1-2 days turnaround,
with no advance notice, is rather unreasonable: i dont share your
schedule, and i cannot change my previous commitments to accommodate
such request.
if you would like to contribute to reportbug, the major thing that
really needs attention is the GTK+ UI: i dont use it, it's been
contributed by an external developer who promised to maintain it and
then lost interest. Users seem to like it so it's been kept alive, but
it would need someone to care for it.
I'm in the process of porting reportbug to py3k so you might also
consider holding your efforts at a later time, when this conversion is
over.
