Re: Retro.Startup Extension (Mac)

2000-11-08 Thread Irena Solomon

Since the program's automated backup scripts are stored in the System :
Preferences : Retrospect : "Retro.Config (4.2)" file, is there any problem
in removing the out-of-date Extension, and then allowing it to be rebuilt
at the next launch of the program?

To recreate the extension altogether, you'll need to quit Retrospect, trash
Retro.Startup, restart the computer, launch and quit Retrospect, then
restart the Mac again. This will create a fresh 4.2 Retro.startup.
Recreating this extension will not adversely affect your scripts.

Re: Error 541- Backup client not installed or not running

2000-11-08 Thread Irena Solomon

Re: Error 541- Backup client not installed or not running

I get this error quite a bit but it is intermittent? One night backups may
work fine and the next night I may get this error on one of my volumes?
We are using a central backup server with an HP Surestore 818 Library
attached. The backup server is a 600Mhz NT4 Server with 256MB of RAM and
plenty of local drive space. Our network is all TCP/IP with NT 4 and
Win2000 Servers and 10/100 Switches. Any ideas as to what causes this and
 to how to fix?

Hi David,

Go to that client. Is the client installed and running? Open it and make
sure it says "Ready" in the Status field. If it does not, troubleshoot this
client to see why it's not running.

If it does, has its IP address changed? Is this client's IP address assigned
by DHCP? If so, configure its subnet and log it in through subnet broadcast.
If the lease expires and it's assigned another IP address, Retrospect will
not be able to find it if you've logged it in by direct IP, or Retrospect
may be finding a different machine without a client installed.

There are other issues as well that may cause an error 541, such as multiple
NICs. For more information, either contact Technical Support or search our
Knowledgebase for that error code at:

Look for Tech Note 413, Retrospect Client For Windows Troubleshooting.

Opinions of Onstream Echo drives

2000-11-08 Thread Joel Moore

We've been backing up to Onstream's Echo drives (DI30: IDE, 15GB) with mixed
results. I like these drives (price is nice, IDE interface) but lately I've
been wondering about the quality.

Two out of the three we've purchased so far were plagued by bad media errors
(-206) in Retrospect. I tried different tapes and in fact the tapes that
resulted in the errors worked fine on the third tape drive.

Has anyone else had experience with these drives? What's your opinion? We
have another one on order but I think that will be the last if this happens
again.

I was thrilled by the idea that I could have 4 or 5 of these working
together for the price of 1 DAT drive so I'll be disappointed if it turns
out they are junk.

I know this isn't technically a Retrospect question so feel free to blast me
but I figured this would be the best place to ask this question.

Re: Backing up a remote site over DSL

2000-11-08 Thread Adam Gerstein

I do a remote backup sub-directories of my mothers iMac (I know, I'm
such a good son, right?) via our cable-modems. It's working so well
(when she remembers to leave it on...) that I'm considering a similar
setup for a consulting client, a friend and my father in-law. Throw
Timbuktu into the mix, and I may never have to visit any of them ever
again!

How feasible is it to backup a remote office over a DSL line? A client has
a backup server at their main office and a remote site with 3 Macs. Each
office has DSL. Assuming we can get through the firewalls, and get static
IPs at the remote site, is it just a matter of entering the remote IPs in
the Client configuration window? Has anyone tried this?
