Re: Retrospect and Quantum Snap Server / again [x-post toMac-Managers list]

2000-07-13 Thread Nicholas Froome

I am testing a Snap Server loaned by Quantum next week.

I would appreciate anyone with experience of backing these up using Retrospect
emailing me their observations. I will summarise later to this list. Specifically I'd
like to know:

* what machine the Snap is mounted on for backup
* OS of that machine
* whether mounted via AppleTalk or TCP/IP
* size of Snap and amount of data
* any problems observed during Recycle and/or Normal backups

Regards

Thanks for your reply. I think the only way to be 100% sure would be to field-test
such a configuration. I would appreciate being informed if anyone does test such a
setup and they report back to Dantz.

To help you find out why I did not get a reply, below is a copy of the mail I sent on

We are considering specifying a Quantum Snap Network Attached Storage device for a
Macintosh-based LAN used by a design client.

What is the situation regarding backing up such devices using Retrospect?

Re: Retrospect and Quantum Snap Server

2000-07-10 Thread Patty McGee

We have a Quantum Snap server 20 gig. We mount it on a PowerComputing
machine using system 8.6. We do have a problem with the backup freezing up
towards the end of backing up the server then the server drops off the
network and must be restarted. We have been working with Quantum to resolve
this issue for a couple of months nowthey are still researching the
problem.

Re: Retrospect and Quantum Snap Server

2000-07-07 Thread Matthew Tevenan

Nicholas,

As you say, this should work. Retrospect should be able to back up a server
mounted on your desktop, emulating AppleShare. Different server software
packages do AppleShare emulation in varied ways, so we can only say for sure
that true AppleShare and NT Services for Mac will definitely work, but I
don't know of any that we recommend against. All known issues along these
lines are listed in the latest Retrospect Read Me. You view this at

Also, I'm surprised you didn't hear back from Tech Support. We pride
ourselves on our responsiveness. Are you sure you e-mailed us at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]? I'm not showing any
incoming e-mails from you to either of these addresses. Please e-mail me
offline if you have any further questions.

Subject: Retrospect and Quantum Snap Server

Does anyone out there have first-hand knowledge of backing up Quantum
SnapServers (or other NAS) in a Macintosh environment?

I know it should work, but I get a funny feeling when I think about backing up
120 Gb of data as a mounted volume...

If anyone has tried it, I'd like to know:

 * what the volume size was
 * the OS version of the machine it was mounted on to be backed up
 * how it was mounted to the host machine (TCP/IP or AppleTalk)
 * whether they have had any problems retaining a connection to it when backing
 up large amounts of data

I emailed Dantz support about this but received no reply.

Re: Retrospect and Quantum Snap Server

2000-07-07 Thread John Spady

Yes,
I had a early model SNAP server in my office for evaluation few one month
ago and we did some tests using Retrospect.

1. volume size was two, 7GB drives, mounted on our backup computer as two
separate volumes.

2. OS for the backup computer was OS 8.5

3. mounted as AppleTalk

4. No problems doing the entire backup... connection remained solid.

OPINION: The SNAP server is a *great* product... but, backups tended to
swamp our network during the day when I tested it. We here have chosen NOT
to purchase it but to instead purchase a Mac OS X server so that the network
files that are stored on the server will be backed up locally and not over
the network. This will present other problems (retrospect does not currently
have a product that runs on the OS X side of the server -- but,
unofficially, retrospect does operate from the OS 9 compatibility window)

Hope this helps.
