Re: [Rosegarden-user] RG 11.02 DSSI issue

2011-03-02 Thread Darcy Kahle
Redhat tends to set the up the /etc/hosts to have only the loopback
line, ie:

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost

Sometimes, the installer takes the hostname that you provide it and puts
it on the same line, ie:

127.0.0.1 hostname localhost localhost

That would be the standard setup for DHCP-driven computers. For
statically allocated IP addresses, the idea is to put the hostname on
the line with the real ip address, ie:

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost
192.168.0.20 hostname hostname.mynet

I would try either the second or the third method

I know what this sounds like, but I've forgotten how to fix it, and I didn't
manage to google the answer right up.

This has something to do with networking, with the way /etc/hosts is
configured on certain systems out of the box. You have to make a minor change
to /etc/hosts to get the plugin GUIs working.

Quite what that minor change is, I wish I could remember. I think it has
something to do with there not being a proper entry for localhost, but some of
the other things I googled up seem to implicate ipv6 too.

Where I'm expecting this to lead, eventually, is that there will be much

By way of example, here's my first attempt at an improved interface for the
AmpVTS plugin, with Rosegarden's presentation of the same for comparison.

Nice. I think this is a great idea -- it'd be lovely to have some
more GUIs that worked with the plugins and hosts we already have, with
minimal development work.

(Though I wonder why our native host editor window is so wide? That
doesn't help, does it?)

There's been a lot of talk about GUIs on the LAD list recently, mostly
to do with how LV2 supports them. Historically the situation there
has been very problematic for any host that isn't written using GTK,
but it looks like things are on the up, as David Robillard has been
working on a library to adapt plugins written for different toolkits
from the hosts.

That's of no immediate use to Rosegarden since it doesn't support LV2
plugins, but it does suggest that one obstacle to supporting LV2 may
be disappearing. Leaving only the biggest one: time. In the world of
realistic immediate solutions to problems, FLAM user interfaces for
LADSPA plugins look like a very good idea with essentially nothing to
lose.

[Rosegarden-user] MIDI Start/Stop and controller messages

2011-03-02 Thread Don Garb
Hi, I am new to Rosegarden so please excuse me if my questions are
basic. I have an old Korg N5 synth connected through an Emu XMIDI 1X1
Tab into RG. There is a button on my Korg that is meant to turn an
external looping sequencer on and off and it's called MIDI START/STOP. I
can see the message sent from this button using QMidiRoute, it shows as
MIDI Start (Transport) and MIDI Stop (Transport). But when I'm using
Rosegarden, the RG Transport dialog does not show these events. It shows
all the others but not those even though I can see them in QMidiRoute.
How can I route that button into RG to turn it on and off as a looping
rythmm sequencer?

Also, when I go to manage Synth Plugins, RG knows that I have Hexter
installed and I can select it, but it's not aware of my other soft
synths like Horgand, Bristol, mx44, Qsynth, and ZynAddSubfx. How do I
let RG know that I have those installed?

And lastly, I can define the rotary controls on my Korg using the Midi
Playback Controllers dialog, but how do I route those values into my
soft synth plugins? Thank you very much for your help!
