 Sherrill hot about cool vests

 By From Our Press Services
 August 27, 2003

Mississippi State football coach Jackie Sherrill is miffed that Nike has
provided Oregon with experimental vests the Ducks might use Saturday
night to
help stay cool when they play the Bulldogs in what figures to be warm and
 humid conditions.

Sherrill said Mississippi State, which also has a contract with Nike,
wasn't
offered the equipment until he asked about it.

The product, which was developed by Oregon-based Nike, is worn under the
shoulder pads and weighs slightly more than a T-shirt. When connected
to a
sideline compressor, the bladder-like device blows helium into the
 players, according to Sherrill.

That helium just ain't right, said Sherill to reporters Monday.
That Auburn
punter tried that a few years back but we caught on to his little game.

Nike spokemen said Tuesday the vests were designed to pump
dehumidified air
onto the players, helping cool them. No helium was being used.

They think we're stupid you know, responded Sherill. C'mon, man,
dehumidified air? Like hell. They pumpin' helium in those boys to
help 'em
jump high and block kicks and stuff.

Nike product scientist Alvin Haynes refuted Sherill's accusation as
baseless.

We are intrigued by Coach Sherrill's grasp of physics and the laws
of gravity
but we maintain that the vests are primarily for cooling, not an attempt
at creating an artificial levitation advantage for the Oregon
players. said
 Haynes.

Saturday's forecast calls for a high temperature of 91 degrees and a
low of 68
with a possible thunderstorm mixed in. Winds are expected to be 20-30mph
 from the south and southwest.

Ah HAH, said Sherrill. Wind! THAT¹S gonna be their undoing! Them Ducks
 didn't figure on wind!

Brodie Croyle faces many
challenges ahead in 03.
The word around Bama Camp the past week has been about how quickly the
offense is learning the system of new head coach Mike Shula. No one
needs to adjust more quickly than sophomore quarterback Brodie Croyle.
Croyle will have to learn his third different offensive gameplan in the
past year.

Nevertheless, the first-year offensive coordinator Dave Rader says that
he is pleased with the offenses performance this summer.

Despite the fact that Croyle has a lot on his plate, he will also have
the opportunity to be surrounded by an array of talent. Wide receivers
Triandos Luke, AC Carter, Zack Fletcher, and Dre Fulgham will all return
this year, along with tight ends Clint Johnston and Donald Clarke.

Its not unpleasant, nor is it displeasing. Were not there yet. But I
think we are heading in the right direction, Rader said.

August 15, 2003

While Alabamas scholarships due to the NCAA sanctions have been
limited, Crimson Tide coach Mike Shula believes he will be able to make
it work. There have been many surprise names in camp this summer, all
exceeding the expectations of coach Shula.

Most surprising this summer on the defensive side of the ball has to be
defensive lineman Dominic Lee. With the losses of the big three,
Moorehead, King, and Johnson from last year, Lee was faced with several
expectations, and has so far passed with flying colors. Coach Shula said
he wouldnt be worried if he were to start Lee this season.

There are many offensive surprises out of the freshman class this
season. Running back Tim Castille has been practiced at fullback and
tailback this summer, and also may see some playing time this year.

There are three fine young wide receivers that 3 or 4 years down the
road all may become household names. Matt Caddell, Tyrone Prothro, and
William Roach. More than likely, none of these guys will start this
season, but learning from the bench will give the receivers two things:
depth, and experience.

Hopefully, some of the questions about Bamas depth have been answered,
and believe it or not, maybe they have been answered by a few rising
young stars. But, well see.

HaY! COKE BOY! He's talking to EWE!

 Now...

Oregon is going to wax MSU's ass with, or without cool
thingies. Probably worse with the cool vests, though.
We have employees in our foundry who wear something
very similar and I can attest that it is a real
difference maker. I don't know of anything other than

I have to admit I would be a little ticked also.
MSU is already going to be under the gun with the
 talent Oregon has and then
to keep their players cooler is just that much more
 of an advantage.
