He passed away at a local hospital Friday. Many people in the Tennessee Valley will remember H. D. Bagley. He was a meteorologist at NewsChannel 19 from 1963 to 1979. NewsChannel 19's Jerry Hays says, "We here at Newschannel 19 lost a great friend today." Senior Reporter Steve Johnson worked alongside H. D. He says,"I came to work at the station in 1977, and H. D. was here for another two years. Of course, like everyone else in the Tennessee Valley, I already knew that H.D. was the guy you turned to when you needed to know what the weather was going to do." "H.D., of course, was a meteorologist with the Army when he came to work with Newschannel 19 in 1963. That was the year the station signed on. H. D. would go full-time, and he would make his reputation as a calm, no nonsense, straight shooting weather man," Steve continues. "I always thought that his decades spent living in Huntsville gave him an extra insight into our weather. I know that after he retired, he still kept records of the weather in his own neighborhood. H. D. Bagley was a meteorologist who got in the business to save lives, and there's no doubt in my mind, he did just that," he adds. For many folks who've lived here a long time, Hubert Drew Bagley, H. D., was /the/ weather man. H. D. went to work part time for Newschannel 19 when the station signed on back in 1963. He eventually retired from his Army meteorologist job and became the full-time weather man. His 16-year career included everything from the tornado of 1974 to the hot summers and winter snowfalls that every forecaster deals with. H. D. worked in a time when the technology was very primitive by today's standards, but he was a meteorologist, not just a pretty face. He retired in 1979, but he still took weather measurements in his Montesano backyard every day. H. D. was a man who went into the business because of a deadly tornado in Forsythe, Georgia that he saw as a young man. He wanted to save lives, and he very likely did. Although H. D. Bagley hasn't done the weather for 25 years, at a rememberance of the killer tornados of 1974, he got a standing ovation from a room full of weather experts. "He was quite a guy, and he made a difference in the Tennessee Valley," says Steve. H.D. Bagley wasn't just a pretty face in front of the weather board. In his heyday, technology wasn't what it is now. But H. D. was definitely a weather man's weather man. John Gordon of the National Weather Service says, "Before we had Dopplers and chroma keys and all these fancy computers and all of that, he was a level headed calm voice in the storm." Bob Knowles of Huntsville says, "You just knew that H. D. knew his stuff. He knew what the people around here needed to have. He's one of us." Georgia native Hubert Drew Bagley was born in 1917. In World War II, H. D. served in the Navy. He was a meteorologist for the Army at Redstone Arsenal when he went to work part time for WHNT. Over his 16 year career, he was the kind of weather man who told his audience what they needed to know because he knew it. "It was such a pleasure to have a guy who was actually a professional meteorologist at a time when television took disc jockeys, or somebody who was a nice bubbly sparkly personality, but they couldn't do the weather--not when you really needed to know the weather," says Bob Knowles. Knowles worked with H. D. at Newschannel 19, and he says H. D. was almost a teacher in his weathercasts. "What's an isobar? I don't know what an isobar is, but if it was important to H. D., then it ought to be important to the rest of us. So you got the idea when you finished seeing his weather presentation, you knew what was going to happen," Knowles continues. Huntsville native Bobby Davis remembers growing up with H. D. and his maps. He says, "Well, as a kid, I remember most everybody taking H. D. Bagley's forecasts to heart. Everybody said, 'What does H. D. say about the weather,' or 'What's going to happen? What weather event is going to come next.'" H. D. knew. He was working the night the tornado of 1974 crossed over Montesano and made everyone leave the station for a nearby ditch. That was about the only time H. D. Bagley wasn't in the weather center doing the job for which he becamse justifiably famous. There was something else H. D. was known for: the way he ended his weather casts every Friday. H. D. Rick CECIL HURT: 'Outsiders’ see good things coming to Tide There is something that takes root every year about this time around the University of Alabama football program, no matter what is done to eradicate it. Obviously, we’re not talking about grass. We’re talking about optimism. It’s only natural, with football season less than eight weeks away, that Crimson Tide fans would be encouraged about the upcoming season. What’s different about this year, though, is that some of the brightest sunshine seems to be coming from outside Tuscaloosa. For instance, take Phil Steele’s 2004 Football Preview, a magazine that won high marks for prescience a year ago when it predicted not only a fifth-place SEC West finish for Alabama, but also correctly tabbed LSU instead of 2003’s trendy pick, Auburn, to win the division. This year, Steele has a seat near the front of the Alabama bandwagon, predicting that the Tide will be second “most improved" team in the country. (To the chagrin of some Tide fans, he thinks the most improved will be Texas A&M, and, in keeping with the “ex-Alabama coaches" theme, he tabs UTEP as the third most improved.) Steele picks Alabama second in the division and boldly states that Alabama could “swagger into Knoxville" with a 7-0 record in October. On top of that, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported earlier this week that one of the most popular propositions this summer in Nevada, where one can legally wager, is “Alabama over-7." That means that people are risking green, folding money on a proposition that pays off only if the Crimson Tide wins more than seven games this season, and the assumption is that not all those people are Alabama fans. So why is America, or at least some of America, bullish on Crimson Tide football for 2004? Is it simply a case where they look at the crimson jerseys and the history books, and don’t realize the modern-day reality that NCAA sanctions have created? Interesting. RTR LC Tide's Marsh gets new job: Infractions chief Friday, July 16, 2004 Gene Marsh was excited. Almost bubbly even. You could hear it in his voice over the phone Thursday afternoon. And why not? His son Elliott's Dixie Youth baseball team just won its district championship and is headed to Troy for the state tournament. "That's my only comment about sports," Marsh said. "The Infractions Committee doesn't matter. My son's all-star team does." Marsh would not comment on the impending development that will put him and the committee back in the news, at least in a state where the NCAA justice system is always a hot topic. The Alabama law professor is about to move up from vice-chair to chairman of the NCAA Infractions Committee. The former faculty rep is going to be the chief justice on the second highest court in the land of college sports. Second highest because the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee does have the power to overturn the decisions of the Infractions Committee. Of course, that happens about as often as Tommy Gallion and Phillip Fulmer go to dinner together. Marsh is going to succeed Thomas Yeager as the Infractions Committee chairman. Yeager is the commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Association, but around here, he's better known as the man who pointed a shotgun at Alabama football and a popgun at Auburn basketball. You don't chair the Infractions Committee in search of popularity. Yeager's not at the top of every Alabama football fan's Enemies List - the only poll in which Fulmer is No. 1 - but the outgoing chairman makes the top 10. Marsh, who's in his second three-year term on the Infractions Committee, said he didn't want to comment because his appointment is not official. It's not, but it's only a matter of time. The Division I Management Council will meet Monday and Tuesday in Baltimore. One of the items on its agenda is to vote on a new Infractions Committee chairman. That vote is expected to be a formality. According to the Management Council meeting's written agenda, the Infractions Committee met in June and voted to recommend that Marsh succeed Yeager as chairman. Marsh's term will begin Sept. 1 and run for two years. What does this mean for Alabama? It's an honor to have one of your own chosen for such an important position, but as the school knows, friends in high places don't always help you beat the rap. His Infractions Committee colleagues praised Marsh at the conclusion of Alabama's last football case even as they buried the program. If the Tide goes on trial again, no one will be able to save it. But Marsh as chairman could be the best thing to happen to major programs accused of major violations because he's been on both sides. He's the right person to hold the enforcement staff to the same high standard as the schools it investigates. The last chairman never felt the pain of a guilty verdict and a harsh sentence aimed at a school he defended. The new chairman has. That's why Marsh is sure to demand that the people charged with nabbing the NCAA's lawbreakers follow the NCAA's laws every step of the way. Former first-team All-American Andy Phillips (1996-99) ripped a two-out walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the International League All-Stars to a 4-3 win over the Pacific Coast League All-Stars in the 17th annual Triple-A All-Star Game in front of 11,000-plus fans at the home of the Pawtucket Red Sox. It was the first-ever extra inning game in Triple-A All-Star history. Phillips, who entered the game at second base in the sixth inning, drilled an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center field off losing pitcher Scott Atchison to give the IL its second straight win in the all star series. Phillips was named the game's Most Valuable Player. The former Crimson Tide star has 19 home runs this season at Double-A Trenton (N.J.) and Triple-A Columbus (Ohio), including 15 home runs since May 15. Joe Vitiello (1989-91) slammed a two-run home run in the fourth inning as the IL tied the game at 2-2. Vitiello, the starting designated hitter, reached base twice in his three plate appearances before being lifted for a pinch-runner in the sixth inning. Vitiello was picked the IL's "Star of Stars." While at Alabama, the duo combined for 95 home runs in seven years with the Crimson Tide. Don't you think that Denzell Washington should play Colin in the movie? Then they are going to re-play the Prez landing on the aircraft carrier and declaring the beginning of the occupation. Oops.
