Troopers issue 579 tickets in speeding blitz on I-65
Tuesday, August 31, 2004
GINNY MacDONALD
News staff writer
Alabama state troopers issued 579 traffic tickets over a 12-hour period on
Interstate 65 on the first day of their crackdown against speeders.

The state numbers do not include tickets issued by sheriff's deputies and
city police or those written by troopers on other interstates.

Troopers wrote 374 tickets Friday for speeding on I-65. The worst offender
was going 111 mph near Evergreen in Conecuh County.

Last Thursday, Gov. Bob Riley announced a statewide crackdown on speeding to
reduce the number of fatalities in wrecks, and that deputies and police
would assist the dwindling state trooper force.

Friday at 7 a.m., troopers were stationed every 10 miles along the 366-mile
interstate as it stretches across the length of Alabama.

The violations included 69 tickets for non-hazardous driving, such as
driving without a license or without taillights.

An additional 262 warning tickets, 114 for speeding, were issued. Also on
I-65 during the 12-hour crackdown, troopers assisted 36 stranded motorists
and worked four accidents.

Col. Mike Coppage, director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, said
the threat of speeding enforcement has slowed motorists.

This morning I drove from Birmingham to Montgomery, Coppage said. He was
in an unmarked car. I set my cruise control at 72 mph and nobody passed me.
It's the enforcement reputation. We have to get people to voluntarily comply
to save lives.

State trooper spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt said some truck drivers were
ticketed, but a breakdown by vehicle type was not available Monday.

There were patrols across the state Friday, but the largest state trooper
focus was on I-65.

Troopers will now assess where the highest number of fatal wrecks is
happening and move to another highway.

It could be a section of highway or it could be a county, Coppage said.

Friday, two radar units stationed on I-65 for four hours accounted for 233
speeding tickets that were issued in Montgomery County.

The Birmingham trooper post, which covers I-65 in Jefferson, Shelby and
Blount counties, issued 125 tickets Friday. They included 47 for speeding,
20 for seat belt violations, two for drivers not having children in
restraint seats and two for following too closely. In addition, 28 warning
tickets were issued.

The governor has said the crackdown on speeders will go on until trooper
patrols are doubled from 360 to 720. Coppage said it could take two years to
hire that many troopers.

[RollTideFan] Tide's Roach at center of police investigation

2004-08-31 Thread Joel Perry
Ok Tide Fans, if this is Roach or any other member of our football team,
should that person be kicked off the team?

I can almost hear the screaming from Alabama fans if this had been a UT or
Allbarn player. Bama fans wouldn't rest until the criminal was arrested and
permanently barred from the team.

Does the same hold true since this 'might' be a Bama player?

By Josh Bean and Bernie Delinski
NYT Regional Newspapers
August 31, 2004

SHEFFIELD | Police remain uncertain how to resolve confusion surrounding a
weekend altercation at a local club that involved a man claiming to be an
Alabama football player.

Sheffield police were called to the Fiesta Club between 1:30 and 2 a.m. on
Sunday morning to break up a verbal altercation.

We have a complaint involving an allegation that at the Fiesta Club, the
individual was placed under arrest, but just before that he stated he was a
University of Alabama football player, and he broke and ran, Sheffield
Police Chief Doug Aycock said.

Initial media and Internet reports Monday linked Tide linebacker Freddie
Roach to the incident, but sources within the UA program said Roach has told
the coaching staff that he was in Tuscaloosa when the Sheffield altercation
occurred.

Aycock said the arresting officer identified Roach based on information in
Alabama's football media guide and information from another person.

Roach, a former star at Brooks High School, has started two seasons as
middle linebacker for the Tide.

Alabama players and coaches had a day off Monday, and Roach was unavailable
for comment, said Tide athletic spokesman Larry White. Efforts to reach
Roach failed and UA officials said they would have no comment without
further information.

Coach Mike Shula will likely address the issue today at his weekly news
conference.

Aycock said there's a possibility that the department will issue misdemeanor
warrants today on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Both
charges would stem from the Sunday morning incident.

We have not signed any warrants, he said Monday night. We're still
investigating.

Aycock said the accused person displayed a firearm in his waistband,
prompting the arresting officer to grab his arm. The gun then fell to the
ground, and the accused person fled the scene on foot.

The officer did not give chase, and Aycock declined to identify the officer.

A Florence woman later reported the gun stolen at the club.

Aycock said no weapons charges are expected to be filed in relation to the
incident.

Police are investigating whether the accused person is Roach or another man,
who also could be an Alabama football player, masquerading as Roach.

The person stated he was a football player, and we have reason to believe
now that he was a player, Aycock said.

When asked if Roach was involved, Aycock said, We're not through with our
investigation. When we are, we'll release the name.

State eyes drinking at games
Tuesday, August 31, 2004
KIM CHANDLER
News staff writer
MONTGOMERY - Football fans aren't the only ones descending on college towns
this weekend.

More than a third of the state's alcohol enforcement agents are, too.

Uniformed officers with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board will be
assigned Friday and Saturday to state-run liquor stores near stadiums where
Auburn University, the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama
at Birmingham will be playing their season openers, events that coincide
with the Labor Day holiday weekend.

ABC's Lt. Jeff Rogers said the effort is a way to discourage underage people
from trying to buy liquor. Agents also will be focusing on crowd control and
combating shoplifting in the stores, which often are packed with boisterous
customers on football Saturdays.

The massive manpower push will involve 35 to 40 enforcement officers, Rogers
said, one or two of whom will be assigned to each of the stores near the
stadiums in Auburn, Tuscaloosa and in Birmingham near Legion Field. The
agency has about 95 enforcement agents.

The agency has done similar enforcement operations during Christmas and
other holidays, but never for football games, Rogers said.

The football/Labor Day push was the idea of ABC Administrator Emory Folmar.
When he was mayor of Montgomery, Folmar developed a tough-on-crime
reputation, even carrying a holstered pistol for a time.

The department might continue the operation throughout football season.

Really, this weekend is the test weekend, Rogers said. We're going to
have to wait and see how it turns out.

Rogers said the department initially intended to keep the operation secret.

John Matson, deputy press secretary for Gov. Bob Riley, said the governor
was aware of the operation and approved.

The governor wants to do anything he can to make our highways safer, he
said.

Matson and Rogers said the operation shouldn't cost the state extra money
because agents will take off during the week to compensate for working the
weekend.

While Christmas is the season to be jolly, Labor Day and football time
apparently are the seasons to be tipsy, at least according to ABC sales.

Labor Day is right up there. And these particular stores, because of the
opening day of football, there's a tremendous amount of people in those
stores, Rogers said.

[RollTideFan] Snip-it from another news article....

2004-08-31 Thread Joel Perry
All I can say is I would be very careful how I would link Freddie Roach's
name to that story, Alabama media relations director Larry White said
Monday night.
Roach, a two-year starter from nearby Killen, is one of three scholarship
players from the Shoals area, along with his brother William and Courtland
linebacker Earnest Nance.
The person stated he was a football player and we have reason to believe now
that he was a player, Aycock said.
Aycock would not confirm the identity of the player under investigation, nor
would White confirm anything Roach said in Monday afternoon meetings with
coaches until charges are filed.
Unless and until that happens, its premature to comment on it, White said.
Nothing has formally happened other than rumors, and its hard to make a
statement about rumors.
Were aware of the reports. I would think they (coaches) have already visited
(the player in question) about this issue.
White said it was possible Roach would address the media on the issue today
as well.

This is really starting to not sound good, especially if Roach does speak
to the press.

That sounds unbelievable. Unless the 'radar units' were actually staffed
by
several ticket writers and one or more radar guns.

Still, that's one ticket per 'unit' every two minutes.

Now you do the math. It said two radar units. It didn't say how many
units they had stopping the violators. I have seen this done before on
my way to Florida on 65 south. They had an arsenal of cars 5 or 6
pulling them over to write them up. But if you have your doubts then
go ahead an fly low and see for yourself first hand.

 Let's do the math:

233 tickets by 2 officers in 4 hours = 116.5 tickets per officer in four

That's about 1 ticket every two minutes per officer.

First things first: LEARN TO USE PLAIN TEXT OR GIT!

I don't give a fsck if they had 200 cars writing tickets

[RollTideFan] Alabama linebacker Nance arrested in Sheffield bar incident

Alabama linebacker Nance arrested in Sheffield bar incident
*
*The Associated Press*
*8/31/2004, 6:04 p.m. CT*
SHEFFIELD, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama freshman linebacker Earnest Lee Nance
was arrested Tuesday on disorderly conduct charges stemming from a bar
incident, police said.

Nance went to the Sheffield Police Department with his attorneys to turn
himself in, according to a statement released by Police Chief Doug
Aycock. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and
released on bond.

A court date was set for Sept. 22.
Aycock said Nance was involved in an incident at the Fiesta Club in
Sheffield early Sunday morning. In a story reported before Nance's
arrest was announced, Aycock told The Tuscaloosa News that there had
been a fight at the bar and that a suspect had displayed a firearm in
his waistband and told an officer he was an Alabama football player.

When the officer grabbed his arm, the gun fell to the ground and the
suspect fled the bar, Aycock told the newspaper.

Nance, who redshirted in 2003, rushed for 827 yards and nine touchdowns
and had 84 tackles before sustaining a season-ending knee injury as a
senior at Courtland High School.

Sheffield is located in Colbert County in northwest Alabama, about 108
miles from the University of Alabama's campus in Tuscaloosa.
