I thought you might like it since you was a UTE Canyon holds ancient civilization secrets 09-20-2004, 11:30 a.m. RANGE CREEK CANYON, Utah - The newly discovered ruins of an ancient civilization in this remote eastern Utah canyon could reveal secrets about the descendants of the continent's original Paleo-Indians who showed up before the time of Christ to settle much of present-day Utah. Archaeologists estimate as many as 250 households occupied this canyon over a span of centuries ending about 750 years ago. They left half-buried stone-and-mortar houses and granary caches, and painted colorful trapezoidal figures on canyon walls. It's like finding a van Gogh in your grandmother's attic, Utah state archaeologist Kevin Jones said. The so-called Fremont people, named after a Spanish explorer who never met them, remain a poorly understood collection of widely scattered archaic groups. Yet they represent a tenuous link to the earliest inhabitants of North America, who are believed to have arrived by way of the Bering Strait more than 10,000 years ago. As a culture, the Fremont were distinguished by their style of basket weaving, animal-claw moccasins and farming and hunting skills. Their everyday tools and pottery were different from the farming-dependent Anasazi south of the Colorado River - even as they shared a similar fate. Both cultures packed up and left about the same time for reasons not fully explained. What became of the Fremont and Anasazi also is a mystery. Earliest traces of Fremont life show up three centuries before the birth of Christ, but they disappeared around A.D. 1250. This unlooted canyon - turned over by a rancher who kept it secret for more than half a century - could have been one of their final strongholds. It also could reveal why the Fremont were driven out of Utah and possibly left in isolated pockets to die off. More recently, makeshift sites found in northwest Colorado suggest they were forced into exile by the Numic-speaking Ute, Pauite and Shoshone tribes. Utah's Indian leaders, however, take exception to that, believing the Fremont are their ancestors. The sacred belief is that we are all related, said Mel Brewster, an archaeologist and historic preservation officer for Utah's Goshute tribe. Range Creek differs from other, better-known ancient sites in Utah, Arizona or Colorado because it has been left virtually untouched by looters, with the ground still littered in places with arrowheads, beads and pottery shards. You could stand right on it and not know it, said Corinne Springer, an archaeologist and Range Creek's new caretaker. Until recently, Range Creek was all but unknown. An expedition from Harvard's Peabody Museum made a stop in 1929, but visited only a few sites. In recent summers, archaeologists and graduate students have quietly conducted a labor-intensive survey - keeping the area's full significance under wraps until news reports surfaced about the land transfer in June. Archaeologists have documented about 300 sites - pit houses, granaries and petroglyphs - but they've surveyed only about 5 percent of the canyon drainage. Among recent finds: a paddle-like wood shovel; a rare bundle of arrow shafts, found wedged in a canyon wall; a perfectly preserved beehive-shaped granary with a cap stone, still a third full with piles of parched wild grass seed and corn; and a pair of human remains from surrounding federal land. To safeguard the canyon, the Utah Natural Resources Department is rushing to adopt a management plan that will restrict hunting, prohibit camping and require visitors to get permits and guides. The state Legislature also appropriated $152,000 for ground patrols and aircraft surveillance. So far, the canyon's subtle charms tell two tales: traces of larger villages just off the canyon bottom and defensive retreats as high as 900 feet atop pinnacle and mesa tops, Jones said. Archaeologists believe more carbon-dating will show the Fremont retreated to the higher positions toward the end of their tenure here, suggesting they were feeling pressure from other tribes moving through their territory. The Fremont would have used ladders, ropes or cords to reach some of their granaries, set at impossible heights where you risk life and limb getting to them, Utah journalist and archaeologist Jerry Spangler said. - Associated Press __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan! I endured the Democrat Convention several weeks ago. Those two experiences convinced me of two things: 1) This election may well decide whether or not America survives as a free nation; and 2) Never has there been such start contrast between two presidential candidates. As to the first, I am really not worried. After Kerry's ridiculous Convention in which he pathetically tried to make this election about Viet Nam, and Bush's magnificent Convention in which he and the other speakers laid out a clear plan to deal with TODAY'S problems, I believe there is very little chance that Kerry could be elected. The American people are much too intelligent to elect a Commander-in-Chief who would turn over our nation's defense to the UN. Unless something very unusual happens, such as a terrorist attack designed to put Kerry in office, I believe President Bush will continue to protect America for four more years. But I would like to spend a little time highlighting the extreme differences between these two men. You may have heard of some of them, but you may be unaware of others because 85% of reporters have said they will vote for Kerry, so they are keeping a lot of information damaging to Kerry from the American people. Today we will live up to our reputation as The Antidote to the Liberal News Media and expose some information that Kerry and his pet media had hoped you would never see. CAREER. Kerry is a career politician. He is so afraid to face a life without politics that he has not resigned from the Senate. Any Senator with conviction would have done what Bob Dole did when he ran for president. He resigned from the Senate so that the people he represented would not be without representation while he campaigned. On the other hand, Bush knows what it is to work at a real job like us, to start and run a business, to take risks. If (heaven forbid!) he should lose this election, he will go back to private life and enjoy it. CHURCH. George W. Bush loves Jesus and serves Him, and he is not afraid to share his faith with anyone. But he does not shove his faith down the throat of others, nor does he put anyone down who believes differently. On the other hand John Kerry doesn't have that problem, because he doesn't believe in anything. His own Catholic Bishops have admonished him not to take Communion because he supports abortion. The only churches where you see him on the news are a few that violate the law by allowing him to use their services as political rallies. These are the same churches that have allowed the corrupt Jesse Jackson and Fidel Castro in their pulpits. CHARACTER. John Kerry is a patrician snob. He looks down his nose at the very people he is supposed to serve. George Bush is a regular guy. If you sat down with him at a barbeque, as some of my friends have done, you wouldn't know he was the most powerful man in the world. And he LOVES the American people, every one of us. CONSISTENCY. A good friend of mine, Fred Avery, recently sent me his thoughts on Kerry's favorite sport, windsurfing: Even his leisure activities depend on which way the wind is blowing. At the Convention Dick Cheney quipped that the reason the two Johns believe in Two Americas is that Kerry has two views on every subject. All of this is true, as his record shows. It is humorous, but it is also scary when you think that this man might hold the lives of your family in his hands. On the other hand, I have never seen George Bush waver on any stand he has taken. After 9-11 he said we would go after the terrorists and capture or kill them

Terrorism may be no less difficult to define, but the wanton killing of schoolchildren, of mourners at a funeral, or workers at their desks in skyscrapers surely fits the know-it-when-I-see-it definition. The media, however, generally shies away from the word terrorist, preferring euphemisms. Take the assault that led to the deaths of some 400 people, many of them children, in Beslan, Russia, on Sept. 3. Journalists have been deep into their thesauruses, finding at least 20 euphemisms for terrorists: * Assailants - America's National Public Radio. * Attackers - the Economist. * Bombers - The Guardian. * Captors - the Associated Press. * Commandos - Agence France-Presse refers to the terrorists both as membres du commando and commando. * Criminals - London's the Times. * Extremists - United Press International. * Fighters - The Washington Post. * Group - the Australian. * Guerrillas: in a New York Post editorial. * Gunmen - Reuters. * Hostage-takers - the Los Angeles Times. * Insurgents - in a New York Times headline. * Kidnappers - London's The Observer. * Militants - the Chicago Tribune. * Perpetrators - The New York Times. * Radicals - the BBC. * Rebels - in a Sydney Morning Herald headline. * Separatists - The Daily Telegraph. And my favorite: * Activists - the Pakistan Times. The origins of this unwillingness to name terrorists seems to lie in the Arab-Israeli conflict, prompted by an odd combination of media sympathy for the Palestinians and intimidation by them. The sympathy is well known; the intimidation less so. Reuters Nidal al-Mughrabi made the latter explicit in advice for fellow reporters in Gaza to avoid trouble, where one tip reads: Never use the word terrorist or terrorism in describing Palestinian gunmen and militants; people consider them heroes of the conflict. The reluctance to call terrorists by their rightful name can reach absurd lengths of inaccuracy and apologetics. For example, National Public Radio's Morning Edition announced on April 1, 2004, that Israeli troops have arrested 12 men they say were wanted militants. But CAMERA, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, pointed out the inaccuracy here and NPR issued an on-air correction on April 26: Israeli military officials were quoted as saying they had arrested 12 men who were 'wanted militants.' But the actual phrase used by the Israeli military was 'wanted terrorists.' (At least NPR corrected itself. When the Los Angeles Times made the same error in its April 24 issue, writing that Israel staged a series of raids in the West Bank that the army described as hunts for wanted Palestinian militants, its editors refused CAMERA's request for a correction on the grounds that its change in terminology did not occur in a direct quotation.) Metro, a Dutch paper, ran a picture on May 3, 2004, of two gloved hands belonging to a person taking fingerprints off a dead terrorist. The caption read: An Israeli police officer takes fingerprints of a dead Palestinian. He is one of the victims (slachtoffers) who fell in the Gaza strip yesterday. One of the victims! Euphemistic usage then spread from the Arab-Israeli conflict to other theaters. As terrorism picked up in Saudi Arabia such media as The Times (London) and the Associated Press began routinely using militants in reference to Saudi terrorists. Reuters uses it with reference to Kashmir and Algeria. Thus has militants become the media's default term for terrorists. These self-imposed language limitations sometimes cause journalists to tie themselves into knots. In reporting the murder of one of its own cameraman, the BBC - which normally avoids the word terrorist - found itself using that term. In another instance, the search engine on the BBC website includes the word terrorist but the page linked to has had that word expurgated. Politically-correct news organizations undermine their credibility with such subterfuges. How can

In New York, Madrid, Moscow, Tel Aviv, Baghdad and Bali, we have seen thousands of people destroyed while going about the daily activities of life. We've been forced to endure the massacre of children. Whether it's teenagers outside an Israeli disco or students in Beslan, Russia, we've seen kids singled out as special targets. We should by now have become used to the death cult that is thriving at the fringes of the Muslim world. This is the cult of people who are proud to declare, You love life, but we love death. This is the cult that sent waves of defenseless children to be mowed down on the battlefields of the Iran-Iraq war, that trains kindergartners to become bombs, that fetishizes death, that sends people off joyfully to commit mass murder. This cult attaches itself to a political cause but parasitically strangles it. The death cult has strangled the dream of a Palestinian state. The suicide bombers have not brought peace to Palestine; they've brought reprisals. The car bombers are not pushing the U.S. out of Iraq; they're forcing us to stay longer. The death cult is now strangling the Chechen cause, and will bring not independence but blood. But that's the idea. Because the death cult is not really about the cause it purports to serve. It's about the sheer pleasure of killing and dying. It's about massacring people while in a state of spiritual loftiness. It's about experiencing the total freedom of barbarism - freedom even from human nature, which says, Love children, and Love life. It's about the joy of sadism and suicide. We should be used to this pathological mass movement by now. We should be able to talk about such things. Yet when you look at the Western reaction to the Beslan massacres, you see people quick to divert their attention away from the core horror of this act, as if to say: We don't want to stare into this abyss. We don't want to acknowledge those parts of human nature that were on display in Beslan. Something here, if thought about too deeply, undermines the categories we use to live our lives, undermines our faith in the essential goodness of human beings. Three years after Sept. 11, too many people have become experts at averting their eyes. If you look at the editorials and public pronouncements made in response to Beslan, you see that they glide over the perpetrators of this act and search for more conventional, more easily comprehensible targets for their rage. The Boston Globe editorial, which was typical of the American journalistic response, made two quick references to the barbarity of the terrorists, but then quickly veered off with long passages condemning Putin and various Russian policy errors. The Dutch foreign minister, Bernard Bot, speaking on behalf of the European Union, declared: All countries in the world need to work together to prevent tragedies like this. But we also would like to know from the Russian authorities how this tragedy could have happened. It wasn't a tragedy. It was a carefully planned mass murder operation. And it wasn't Russian authorities who stuffed basketball nets with explosives and shot children in the back as they tried to run away. Whatever horrors the Russians have perpetrated upon the Chechens, whatever their ineptitude in responding to the attack, the essential nature of this act was in the act itself. Midwest, South tornadoes, April 2001 - $2.2 billion. 9. Northeast winter storm, March 1993 - $2.2 billion. = Part II Storm may cost $20 billion Insurance adjustors assess Charley's damage to Florida By Joseph B. Treaster The New York Times Saturday, August 14, 2004 - Damage inflicted by Hurricane Charley as it ripped across the midsection of Florida on Friday and early Saturday could exceed $20 billion dollars, making it one of the most costly storms in history, economic analysts said. Karen Clark, the chief executive of AIR Worldwide, a Boston firm that provides damage assessments for insurance companies, said some of the most severe destruction came from surging seas sweeping across the barrier islands and beaches of Florida's Gulf Coast in the vicinity of Punta Gorda as the hurricane first made landfall. But Clark and field representatives of insurance companies said Orlando, with its glistening downtown office towers, Walt Disney World and other huge theme parks, was also hit hard even though the storm's gusts were diminishing as it moved through the center of the state and skimmed past Daytona Beach on its way to the Atlantic Ocean. We have a swath of damage across the state, she said. Lee and Charlotte Counties on the west coast were the hardest hit. But the damage in Orlando is also significant. Hundreds of house trailers were destroyed in Port Charlotte and surrounding Charlotte County, said Loretta Worters, a spokeswoman for the Insurance Information Institute, who is monitoring developments from New York for her trade group. She said government buildings in the county suffered heavy damage and that there were reports Saturday morning that fires had broken out in the ruins of some houses near the town of Arcadia in Desoto County. She said that a hospital in Arcadia was badly damaged and that the Turner Agri-Civic Center there, where concerts and sports events have been held, was destroyed. The hurricane weakened moving into the Carolinas, and Clark estimated that it might cause several hundred million more in damages there and farther up the coast. Hurricane Charley may be the second-most devastating storm in modern times after Hurricane Andrew, which battered South Florida in 1992 at a cost of more than $25 billion. RMS, a California company that also assesses storm damage for insurance companies, estimated late Friday that the cost of Hurricane Charley to insurers would be about $5 billion. A much smaller portion of the damage of Hurricane Charley will be covered by insurance than with Hurricane Andrew, industry experts said, because

Re: [RollTideFan] Price embraces UTEP, puts Alabama scandal behind him
I'm betting he's embraced the hell out of those strip clubs down in JuarezJamie HELP KEEP AMERICA CLEAN FLUSH THE JOHNS - Original Message - From: M Laborde [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RollTideFan-The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 2004 12:27 PM Subject: [RollTideFan] Price embraces UTEP, puts Alabama scandal behind him http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/9372537.htm?1c Price embraces UTEP, puts Alabama scandal behind him JOHN McFARLAND Associated Press EL PASO, Texas - The view from Texas-El Paso coach Mike Price's office high above the Sun Bowl depends on perspective. The casual observer sees the site of some of the most pathetic football of the past three decades, an often deserted desert stadium overshadowed by scraggly hills. But Price sees untapped potential in a 51,500-seat stadium and scenic athletic complex wedged into the foothills of the Franklin Mountains. He sees an eager fan base in the historic city of 700,000 just across the Rio Grande from Mexico. And at 58, he sees perhaps a last shot at redemption after losing a $10 million job at Alabama following a night involving alcohol, strippers and few other confirmed details. I feel real lucky, said Price, a former national coach of the year who was hired in December. This has been a really humbling experience. When Price leads the Miners onto the field for the first time Sept. 2 at Arizona State, he'll officially join the small fraternity of coaches trying to make good after off-the-field embarrassments. George O'Leary begins anew at Central Florida, his first head coaching job since Notre Dame fired him in 2001 because of a trumped up resume. Gary Barnett is back in Colorado following a suspension for comments about women who accused players of rape. Price may have the toughest job of them all. He was 83-78 with five bowl appearances in 14 seasons at Washington State. At UTEP, he leads a program with just one winning season in the last 15. The Miners have just six wins in the past three years and lost eight times last season by 28 or more points. But Price gives UTEP fans hope. I've changed my mind on him, said Tony Stafford, an English professor and one of the few people on campus who raised concerns about hiring Price. Since he's gotten here, I've come to see the kind of person he is. He's a guy who made a terrible mistake, but I think he's sorry for it. Ticket sales are up, and optimism is back for the first time in years at a school that still clings to the memory of the 1966 NCAA basketball championship when it was still called Texas Western. There's a buzz that I haven't seen since I've been here, said UTEP president Diana Natalicio. Price brought similar excitement to Alabama last year. But he was fired after just four months, before coaching a game or signing his contract. Alabama's president cited drunken behavior after Price's highly publicized outing at a Florida strip joint in April 2003. Sports Illustrated reported that Price got drunk that night and had aggressive sex with strippers. Price's $20 million libel and slander lawsuit is pending against the publisher of the magazine, which stands behind its story. He admits drinking too much, returning to his hotel room with a woman, then passing out and waking up with all his clothes on. Nothing that was in the article happened, Price said. It was just a bunch of innuendos. That night there were poor decisions on my part, but nothing like what was reported. There was no sexual activity with women. Price's football future was in doubt a year ago. He was not a head coach last season for the first time in 23 years, and his prospects didn't look good. He was quickly and publicly rejected after seeking the Arizona job. But UTEP, about as far from the spotlight as a Division I-A team can be, was interested. Natalicio and athletic director Bob Stull liked Price but were cautious. They reviewed incident reports, called other schools and performed other due diligence Stull wouldn't specify. It's one of those life-changing experiences where you either learn from it or you'll make the same mistake again, and I felt confident he'd learn from it, Natalicio said. We got a coach of Mike Price's caliber, and he to get a chance to redeem himself. ... And so everybody won. Some Miners players said they didn't understand the fuss over Price's indiscretion. All that talk about him and his past didn't faze me one bit, and it shouldn't. It has nothing to do with football, receiver Chris Marrow said. Price says he feels reborn at UTEP, but realizes how far he fell. I went to the Rose Bowl (with WSU), stayed in a Beverly Hills suite as nice as you can get, took limos everywhere, he said. At Alabama, I had drivers and Lear jets. ... Then, coming here to El Paso, I drove a pickup truck with two dogs. So it's been a humbling experience to say the least. Even

[RollTideFan] Fw: This Ain't Pretty
why can't we just round them up and send them home GWB has to stop appeasing that 70's porn star Vicentes Fox Jamie has sent you an article from The Washington Times. Jamie Watts's comments: --- IMMIGRATION PLAN ENVISIONS 'INCENTIVES' TO ILLEGAL ALIENS By Jerry Seper THE WASHINGTON TIMES --- Millions of illegal aliens in the United States would be free from arrest and deportation, have access to tax-deferred savings accounts and Social Security credits, and get unrestricted travel to and from their home countries under President Bush's guest-worker program. According to previously undisclosed details of the president's plan, which some critics have described as a limited amnesty, the proposal offers numerous incentives for the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens to come out of the shadows, Homeland Security Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson, the nation's border and transportation security czar, told a Senate panel. Mr. Hutchinson, in a written response to questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the Bush plan would help eliminate sleepless nights for illegal aliens worried that a simple misstep, such as a traffic ticket or accident, could result in bringing them to the attention of federal authorities and their subsequent deportation. Eliminating the fear of deportation will be an incentive, Mr. Hutchinson said in the 13-page response. Undocumented aliens will tell you they often have trouble sleeping at night, and leaving for work each day, not knowing if they will make it home at the end of the day. Mr. Hutchinson said the president's guest-worker plan recognizes that some aliens working illegally in this country who decide to pursue citizenship should be allowed to apply for lawful permanent residence in the normal way. But, he said, in order not to give an unfair advantage to illegal aliens over those immigrants who have followed legal procedures from the start, the Bush plan would seek a reasonable annual increase in legal migrants. In January, Mr. Bush proposed a guest-worker program that would allow millions of illegal aliens in the country to remain if they have jobs and apply as guest workers. The Senate panel sent Mr. Hutchinson its questions at that time. Mr. Hutchinson responded within a few weeks, although his answers were not made public. Under Mr. Bush's proposal, the aliens could stay for an undetermined number of renewable 3-year periods, after which they could seek permanent legal status. The proposal has been met with criticism from law enforcement authorities and has been challenged by both Republicans and Democrats. Some have called the plan an amnesty program that invites aliens in this country illegally to gain perpetual legal status. Others said it was unpractical and could become a scheme to identify illegal aliens and deport them. The National Border Patrol Council, which represents all 10,000 of the Border Patrol's nonsupervisory agents, has called the Bush plan a slap in the face to anyone who has ever tried to enforce the immigration laws of the United States. In the written response, Mr. Hutchinson said the Bush plan would: ·Allow illegal aliens working in the United States to create tax-deferred savings accounts that could be withdrawn on return to their home countries. He said this would encourage savings and even capitalization in businesses, houses or land in the aliens' home countries. ·Give the aliens access to bilateral agreements the United States has with 20 countries, allowing them to combine earned Social Security credits and receive benefits in their home country. He said the administration would work with its international partners to encourage recognition of the aliens' contributions in both countries. ·Give the aliens access to travel, knowing they can go and return freely to the country of origin for celebrations, funerals or vacations. He said cards would be given to the aliens allowing them to travel back and forth between their home countries and the United States without fear of being denied re-entry. Mr. Hutchinson said the president believes provisions should be made for the aliens' families to remain in this country or travel to the United States with the temporary workers, if they can demonstrate an ability to financially support their families and if the family members are not criminal or security risks. Current law says an alien who has lived illegally in the United States for longer than 180 days must return home and wait three years before applying for legal visitor or immigrant status, and 10 years if he has been here illegally for a year. Mr. Hutchinson said that since many of the illegal aliens who would participate in the Bush plan would have exceeded the three-year and 10-year bars, any

RL TIIDE HELP KEEP AMERICA CLEAN FLUSH THE JOHNS - Original Message - From: Ricky Mc [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RollTideFan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, July 31, 2004 11:13 AM Subject: [RollTideFan] keep on being Alabama fans http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040729/NEWS/40729008/1067 CECIL HURT: Shula stays above the fray and below the radar HOOVER | University of Alabama football coach Mike Shula accomplished what some others deemed impossible on Thursday. He came to metro Birmingham. He talked about his football team and the upcoming season. When the Alabama-Tennessee series was mentioned, he managed to be gracious, not inflammatory. While Phil Fulmer was erupting over the telephone in the other room, Shula managed not to step in anything that Fulmer was spewing. If his critics want to say that Shula passed under the radar screen on Thursday, that might have been his preferred position. The Crimson Tide head coach was more relaxed in his second SEC Media Days appearance. Thats understandable, since last year, he had to field questions about a team that he had inherited but had never even watched in a practice session. I was just trying to remember everyones name, and that included my coaches, Shula joked. Shula was asked numerous times, in tones ranging from angry to understanding, about the future of the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry. He always responded in a positive fashion. Alabama versus Tennessee is what college football is all about, Shula said. I think its great, and I am looking forward to this years game. When pressed for more specific comments, Shula simply said, weve got enough things to worry about in Tuscaloosa. Thats true, as it would be for any coach looking to rebuild a 4-9 team under the yoke of NCAA scholarship sanctions. Shula, though, didnt sound worried. He seemed realistic about the expectations for Alabama which was picked to finish fourth in the SEC West but was also positive about the future. He also talked in specifics about the numbers for the upcoming squad. He said that the 105-man roster for the Aug. 9 reporting date was pretty well set, and that he did not anticipate any academic casualties among current players, although a couple still have some work to do. He also said he was still waiting on word about one signee (Ezekial Knight, although he couldnt use the name) and said that Alabama would definitely have 19 eligible newcomers when practice begins. That will give us 74 scholarship players, Shula said. Thats less than most teams, but its about what we had last year. The thing thats encouraging to me is that everything goes just right, we could be back at 85 next year. Those numbers would include a little stretching to incorporate walk-ons who were awarded scholarships, but the point was that Shula was trying to talk about positives, instead of spinning excuses. He did the same thing when talking about the incoming class. He said that the Tide could easily have 10 true freshmen receiving playing time, and possibly as many as 13. That doesnt even include two junior college signees that will be included in the group of 19 that reports on Aug. 9, which means that there could be as few as three or four redshirts out of this class (primarily on the offensive line, one would suppose.) When asked if it was possible that two true freshmen could start at wide receiver if the Tide opened in a four-wide formation, Shula didnt hedge. Definitely two, he said. And possibly more. Again, thats at last two true freshmen starting on offense. And, as Shula says, possibly more. Were not going to be afraid of playing guys, Shula said. We arent going to play them if they arent ready, but we are going to do our best to get them ready. All morning long, Shula had ready-made excuses at hand. His team will be short on depth. His team will be inexperienced at some key positions. The ongoing bickering about the NCAA will be a distraction. He chose to embrace none of them. Our players have done a great job over the past few years, when they could have been distracted, of keeping their minds on football, he said. Thats what we want. Its nice to be bowl eligible, but we dont want them thinking about which bowl we want to go to, we want them thinking about the first game. If you win one week at a time, then the bowl will take care of itself. At one point, Shula was asked if he was under pressure to win. Is this college football? he responded. Youre always under pressure to win. At another point, a well-meaning reporter asked Shula if he would encourage Alabama fans to be patient in 2004. I hope I never use those words be patient, Shula said. Our seniors dont want to hear that. Im not predicting any number of wins, but we are going to try to win every one of them. My message to Alabama fans is not be patient. Its to keep on being Alabama fans. Cecil Hurt is sports editor of The Tuscaloosa News. Reach him at [EMAIL

[RollTideFan] Fw: LOST WORDS!
This made me think of purple medicineif you can find a pharmacist that knows what it is, it can still be foundJamie Subject: LOST WORDS! The other day I picked up a copy of his essay collection, Tom Dodge Talks About Texas. Well, one of those little pieces sent me off on a reverie almost immediately. It was about Big Jim Tidwell of Whitney - The Fender Skirt King of Texas. And I thought, Fender skirts! What a great blast from the past! I hadn't thought about fender skirts in years. When I was a kid, I considered it such a funny term. Made me think of a car in a dress. Thinking about fender skirts started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice. Like curb feelers and steering knobs. Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. You kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you. Remember Continental kits? They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental. When did we quit calling them emergency brakes? At some point parking brake became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with emergency brake. I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the foot feed. Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - store-bought. Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy. Coast to coast is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term worldwide for granted. This floors me. On a smaller scale, wall-to-wall was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered their hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure. When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase in a family way? It's hard to imagine that the word pregnant was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and being in a family way or simply expecting. Apparently brassiere is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cackled. I guess it's just bra now. Unmentionables probably wouldn't be understood at all. It's hard to recall that this word was once said in a whisper -divorce. And no one is called a divorcee anymore. Certainly not a gay divorcee. Come to think of it, confirmed bachelors and career girls are long gone, too. Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - rat fink. Ooh, what a nasty put-down! Here's a word I miss - percolator. That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? Coffeemaker. How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this. I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like DynaFlow and ElectraLuxe. Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with SpectraVision! Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening their kids with castor oil anymore. Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most - supper. Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan! Re: [RollTideFan] The faces of war
Scott sed: The point that in order to honor them and their sacrifice, there must be a political agenda behind it. These people have lost their life and left behind families...momma's, daddies, sisters, brothers, wives and worst of all...children. It matters not whether the reason is politically justifiable or not. They are missing from their loved ones lives regardless. I support the troops as much as any other true blue red blooded American, but man I wish we'd stayed focused on getting Bin Laden and just continued to keep an eye on Saddam. Re: [RollTideFan] Should they? (Actually Bama Related)
- Original Message - From: Joel Perry [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'RollTideFan' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, April 19, 2004 8:11 AM Subject: [RollTideFan] Should they? (Actually Bama Related) UA faculty considers apologizing for campus slavery By JAY REEVES The Associated Press 4/19/2004, 12:02 a.m. CT TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Vestiges of slavery are all over the University of Alabama. Behind the majestic president's mansion are three small buildings where slaves lived and worked before the Civil War. The mansion and several other campus structures contain bricks made by slaves. Teachers of the antebellum period owned slaves, and two buildings are named for university presidents who did, too. Another hall honors a doctor who advocated the idea that blacks were genetically fit for slavery. With all these reminders and more lingering at a university that is now among the most racially integrated in the South, leaders are making a break with the sins of the past. The Faculty Senate on Tuesday will consider a resolution apologizing to the descendants of people who were enslaved at Alabama, founded in 1831 and mostly destroyed by Union troops during the war before being rebuilt. President Robert Witt said he doesn't have a problem with the apology if it is a beginning rather than an end to the university's attempts to become more diverse and inclusive. If it does stop there we fail, Witt said in an interview. I am afraid some think words are enough. I do not. Last week, with momentum for the apology building, Witt agreed to the requests of students and teachers who asked administrators to acknowledge the school's links to slavery with historic markers, including one near the unmarked graves of two slaves buried on campus. The author of the proposed apology, law professor Alfred Brophy, said the resolution is more about making a statement of acceptance today than stirring up the hurts of the 1800s. While reparations for slave descendants and apologies have been discussed for several years nationwide, no other university has apologized for its ties to slavery, Brophy said. I hope this will be something positive for the university, said Brophy, walking near a campus building he said may have been built in part with slave labor. The proposal has critics, however. Brophy, with degrees from Columbia University and Yale University, has been lambasted on talk radio shows, and the Web site of the school newspaper is sprinkled with criticism. A faculty member who opposes the apology called slavery the great American tragedy - an indelible, horrid part of American culture. Because of that, said music professor Marvin Johnson, the idea that an apology could do any good is demeaning to blacks who were enslaved, poor whites who suffered under the antebellum economic system and faculty members of the 1800s who were following a practice of their time. It's not going to fix anything, said Johnson. You can't `apologize' for slavery. It's a drastic oversimplification. Alabama isn't the only school reviewing its ties to slavery. Brown University in Providence, R.I., last month began a two-year inquiry into its links to the slave trade. But race is a particularly sensitive topic at Alabama, which last year marked the 40th anniversary of then-Gov. George C. Wallace's showy stand in the schoolhouse door to prevent integration in 1963. Brophy, who has written on race and property laws in early America, came to Alabama in 2001. A campus diversity group asked him last year to present a talk on slavery at the university, which today has about 20,000 students, 15 percent of whom are from minority groups. Research assistants found texts and records documenting the use of slaves at Alabama, which had only a half-dozen or so faculty members and about 100 students when the Civil War began. Brophy said he was amazed by some of what they found: Basil Manly, a prominent Baptist minister who served as university president from 1838 to 1855 and gave the invocation at the inauguration of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, owned slaves and was a leading apologist for slavery, Brophy said. Today, Manly Hall is named for him. Nott Hall is named for Josiah Nott, remembered today mainly as a proponent of the theory that different races of people had different origins, and that blacks were genetically built for slavery. Besides the president's mansion and an old observatory that survived the war, Brophy said, slave labor went into Gorgas House, built in 1829 and the oldest building on campus. A historic marker outside the house tells of the family it was named for, but it doesn't mention the slaves who helped build it and, for a time, lived there. Brophy said that while he would like to see the names of some buildings altered to acknowledge the early role of blacks at Alabama, he doesn't believe anything should be removed, including a stone marker honoring students

[RollTideFan] Fw: Teresa Heinz Kerry
Interesting readJamie http://www.frontpagemag.com/articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=12187 - this article gives a detailed description of what the Tides Foundation has its hands in. Catsup, Pickles, and the Radical Left by Paul R. Hollrah Maria Teresa Thiersten Simoes-Ferreira Heinz Kerry was born in Mozambique, the daughter of a Portuguese physician, and was educated in Switzerland and South Africa. Fluent in five languages, she was working as a United Nations interpreter in Geneva in the mid-60's when she met a handsome young American, H. John Heinz, III, who worked at a bank in Geneva. He told her his family was in the food business. They were married in 1966 and returned to Pittsburgh where his family ran the giant H.J. Heinz food company. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1971, and in 1976 he was elected to the first of three terms in the United States Senate. Senator H. John Heinz was a friend of mine - not a close friend, not a golfing buddy, but a friend nonetheless. The last time I saw him alive was, oddly enough, in the men's restroom at the Maverick Steakhouse, a favorite nighttime eatery and watering hole for politicians and lobbyists in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The senator was standing at a wash basin, drying his hands, when I entered the room. When he turned and saw me he rushed toward me, threw his arms around me, and said, Paul, it's good to see you! All I could do was mumble, Senator, do you really think we should be seen hugging each other in a men's restroom? He didn't think so, and neither did I, but we shared a good laugh over his impromptu display of affection. Several years later, in 1991, he was killed when his plane collided with a Sun Oil Company helicopter over a Philadelphia suburb - the same helicopter that I often used to travel between Philadelphia and Washington, DC. The senator, his pilot and co-pilot, and both of Sun's helicopter pilots were killed. He was survived by his wife, Teresa, and their three young sons. Four years later, after inheriting Heinz's $500 million fortune, she married Senator John Forbes Kerry, the liberal junior senator from Massachusetts. She became a registered Democrat and the process of her radicalization was set in motion. Heinz Kerry is not shy about telling people that she required Kerry to sign a pre-nuptial agreement before they were married. John Kerry may not have check-writing privileges on the Heinz catsup and pickle fortune, but he is certainly a willing and uncomplaining beneficiary of it. A lot of hard-earned money, made through many years of hawking catsup, pickles, and soup, has fallen into the hands of two people who despise successful entrepreneurship and who believe in the confiscatory redistribution of wealth. So how does Mrs. Heinz Kerry spend John Heinz's money? Just one example: According to the G2 Bulletin, an online intelligence newsletter of WorldNetDaily, in the years between 1995-2001 she gave more than $4 million to an organization called the Tides Foundation. And what does the Tides Foundation do with John Heinz's money? * They support numerous anti-war groups, including Ramsey Clark's International Action Center. Clark has offered to defend Saddam Hussein when he's tried. * They support the Democratic Justice Fund, a joint venture of the Tides Foundation and billionaire hate-monger George Soros. The Democratic Justice Fund seeks to ease restrictions on Muslim immigration from terrorist states. * They support the Council for American-Islamic Relations, whose leaders are known to have close ties to the terrorist group, Hamas. * They support the National Lawyers Guild, organized as a communist front during the Cold War era. One of their attorneys, Lynne Stewart, has been arrested for helping a client, Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, communicate with terror cells in Egypt. He is the convicted mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. * They support Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Rights Action League, and the Abortion Action Project. * They support the most violent of all homosexual action groups, ACT-UP. * They support the Barrio Warriors, a radical Hispanic group whose primary goal is to return all of Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas to Mexico. These are but a few of the radical groups that benefit, through the anonymity provided by the Tides Foundation, from the generosity of our would-be first lady - the wealthy widow of Republican senator John Heinz, and now the wife of the Democratic senator who aspires to be the 44th President of the United States. If voters will only try to imagine a woman such as Teresa Heinz Kerry, the fairy godmother of the radical left, laying her head on a pillow each night just inches from the President of the United States, hopefully they will decide that the only way these two will ever be allowed into the White House is with an engraved invitation in hand. As I recall that somewhat embarrassing chance meeting in the men's
